Nozzle alignment is a big part of this, but also bear in mind that there is a liquid sloshing about inside the body, affecting its center of buoyancy. The biggest thing that I found is that canting the rear fins results in straight operation UNDER the water, however the torpedos quickly become buoyant as the liquid gas is expelled. With that being the case, only the lower fins are in the water, resulting in either left or right steering depending on the direction that the fins were canted.

My pieces came from 32nd Parallel, a company that went out of business back in the '90's. Everything will need to be made from scratch. You'll need access to aluminum tubing and material to turn the caps and tails from. A lathe would be perfect, but you could also get by with a drill press or other stable drill platform. Nothing on the market in that scale. Bear in mind that these are basically rockets, so few manufacturers will accept liability for selling them.
@RCSubGuy

Its not just up and down that needs to be corrected, but left or right. Adding spin to the torp is necessary to counteract any slight variations in nozzle direction. The creation and implementation of an elevator system like you mentioned is certainly possible, but the amount of work necessary is very high, as is the possibility of losing the weapon at the lake or pond. The torps I made are cheap, easy to fabricate and work well. I just need to tweak the amount of gas and the fin angles...

you should see if it has enough power to puncture a boats hull made out of the thin sheets of balsa wood and sink it. That would be cool especially if you replicated the sinking of the Lusitania

The gas is not CO2, it is airbrush propellant. CO2 operates at far too high a pressure for safe operation in a model sub without many pressure reducers and adapters. This system uses a simple servo to push the torpedo off its seal, allowing the gas to escape from the rear nozzle. There is no spring assist in this prototype version.

Torpedoes aren't an off-the-shelf product. There are huge liability and safety concerns that mean most vendors steer clear of it. You can try the Sub-Driver website. They have a small torpedo system you can buy. Other than that, however, its a matter of buying raw materials and turning out your own weapons of mass destruction (aluminum tubing, resin endcaps, brass tubing for nozzles, etc). Good luck!

I didnt read all the comments, and im sure you thought of this... How about retractable wings like a arrow tip or spear gun. Retract them so it would fit in the launcher, and then pop out and guide the torpedo straight once it was out. It might loose some distance, but might track better.

Cool idea. Real torpedo's have spring loaded fins that extend out once it leaves the tube. I bet if you could figure out something like that you could have bigger fins for more stability. Have you tried a little weight in the front?

There are not many places that will sell torpedo kits. Its a small hobby and in this world of sue-happy people, the danger of a torpedo injuring someone is too great a risk for many talented builders to offer a kit for sale. That having been said, check out the Sub-Driver website for most of what you'll need.

@STARDRIVE
@STARDRIVE 10 жыл бұрын
It mimics a steam torpedo, but how do you plan triggering it? You actually do stuff, I'm more of a theoretic: What are your thoughts about dual screw electric propulsion with one of the props fixed to the hull? Fast & straight, and you can incorporate a reed-relay (thus triggering it by a coil surrounding the torpedo tube.) A neodymium magnet on the tip makes it stick to a dedicated target boat; also providing detection to start a sinking/roll-over sequence including special effects. Plus a magnet makes stray torpedoes easier to retrieve by using an ironclad vessel. You can even make the battery switch over to a blinker LED after a timed run... I'm sure your practical & uncluttered design is one of the reasons you made it happen in real life ;)
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 10 жыл бұрын
Bear in mind that there is very little room in there. Add batteries, a motor, reed switches, ballast, etc and you'll be challenged to maintain buoyancy. Is it doable? For sure. Worth it? Only you can decide!

Ronald van Kemenade Coin cell batteries and a Pager Motor? Discuss.
@STARDRIVE
@STARDRIVE 10 жыл бұрын
TheWinning247 Saves a lot of room & weight.. I wonder if rechargeable coin cells exist... If rechargeable, one could seal the torpedo perfectly, having just 2 contacts for charging flush with the hull. Any ideas for sealing the drive shaft?
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 10 жыл бұрын
Ronald van Kemenade I did experiment with pager motors and they work well. They are not very powerful, but can spin a 1/4" or 3/8" propeller alright. Sealing the shaft is problematic as traditional seals do have a high friction. I simply ran mine wet and doused them with oil after each run. They're cheap enough that you can simply replace them if they do eventually die. This way the only thing that needs sealing is the battery compartment, which is very easy to do.

How did you produce the torpedoes themselves? Are they like the original 1/72 versions, made of cast resin?
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 9 жыл бұрын
randomguy9898 These particular weapons were created using aluminum tubing and resin end caps. The big issue is adhesion between the two unlike materials as the tubing expands and contracts drastically during fueling and firing. A flexible adhesive such as RTV is needed.
