Factor is a data structure used for fields that takes only predefined, finite number of values (categorical data). For example: a data field such as marital status may contain only values from single, married, separated, divorced, or widowed.

I don't know if it's me, but when its original the interest has values 3 5 3 7 4 3 5, but after the conversion, you have 1 3 1 4 2 1 3, did we miss anything here?

How can I recode multiple factor variables as number at once? I have a data set as "highly dislike" "somewhat dislike" etc for a whole set of variables and I'd like to change them all at once.

Thank you, this was really helpful. After changing the factors to numeric, my variable, 'Female', where male = 0 and female = 1 were automatically set to female = 1 and male = 2, how do I change it to 0 and 1?
