“One persons favourite book is another persons firewood” - a great reminder and wonderful motivation. Just what I needed to hear today half way through my first year as a PhD distance student (being remote can be so difficult!). Thanks for sharing 🤗.

Good luck with your PhD, distance must be really tough, it's hard enough just doing a standard PhD without that!

I am saving that vedio to my motivation playlist. In our country Pakistan there is a phrase is our national language urdu translation " if the person who is telling the story has actually gone through that event no matter how hard you try to ignore it, that talk of his will cut your chest and reach the core of heart". I have heard dozens od motivational speeches since my phd paper was rejected in feb 2019. And it appeared to me how can i get motovated when they dnt know what failure i am experiencing but you my dear nailed it. I have no words to thank you.

Finding this piece of advice at this moment is quite useful. It is hard for someone to get into a PhD position, and even more when your background doesn't help you because the country you live in. Thanks a lot for a piece of your time!

I recently got rejected from a job I applied for and really wanted. So I can say I can totally relate. Shortly after I got another job I wasn't so excited about starting but I am loving. Hold on and you will definitely get what is best for you. Thank you so much.

The nature of academia is that you constantly receive and seek out feedback and criticism, constructive or otherwise. It can be a bit of an eye opener but the best advice i received on the subject was to simply "toughen the f&#k up". Of course, you managed to say this in a far more eloquent fashion!
@Zm543215 жыл бұрын
David Wilson Or “grow a thick skin”, all of which are easier said than done of course but it takes some practice and we’re good.
@dhlwilson825 жыл бұрын
@@Zm54321 it's most definitely easier said than done but some degree of resilience is essential in any career or walk of life.

David Wilson I was one of the lucky few whose 1st research paper got accepted with the 1st journal I submitted my work to, but I had my share of severe rejection in academia, and like you said, resilience is essential to keep you going.

I edit scholarly journals for a living and from an editor’s standpoint, it is very easy to forget that somebody has put their blood, sweat and tears into every manuscript that comes across your desk. This is why at my company, we try to make a point of personalising each decision email we send with the reasons behind it, especially when it is a rejection. Not only do we owe some measure of explanation to the authors, constructive feedback will also help them improve their work next time they submit it.

Thank you. It was super helpful because Im applying for a bunch of PhD positions right now and Im experiencing rejection, which is inevitable in this process I think. BTW I have a question to anyone who has already been accepted in a PhD program. Should you necessarily have published papers when applying for a PhD?
@nwaforobiclothing5 жыл бұрын
I am in the same boat. the honest answer is it depends on who you applied to. Have you tried working in a professor's research lab before applying to the program ? I wish you all the best in your endeavor

I understand what you’re saying, intellectually... but after three years of PhD applications; writing about five different proposals and doing endless revisions with no acceptances and about a dozen rejections, it does make you wonder if you’re meant for a life in academia...

alaa chok Honestly, at this point I don’t know... but I think it may have something to do with the fact that I’m a foreign applicant, therefore, I will require more funding than a national... But really, it could be anything...
