This is REM at their best. I love Stipe's mumble stage better than his articulate stage.

I saw them many times from 1984-90, and they were so dynamic back then. This tour was awesome- they had Chronic, Murmur, Reckoning, and Fables to play, plus they always did cool covers like Witchita Lineman, Have You ever Seen the Rain, See No Evil, etc. As they matured they became better technically, but their early shows were much more electric; a tru event when they came around. People left those shows buzzing (and not because they were stoned:)

One of the best early live clips of them I've seen ... "there's a splinter in your eye" ... loving it !

First concert was REM/ Madness/ Joan Jett/ The Police at JFK stadium in Phila. - 1984. We REM fans were in the minority. Absolutely - Murmur, Fables, Chronic Town, Reckoning - absolute genius and stand the test of time.

Peter Buck kills! When this came out Hair Metal and Synth Pop ruled. Amidst all the garbage there were a few great bands like REM.

everyone always comments, "mills was great", or "buck was great". the truth is - mills was great, buck was great, berry was great, stipe was great. they were, all 4, great musicians.

I'd still love to know what exactly Mills is singing. We saw them play this in Ann Arbor either earlier that year or in 1986, and we spent 2 hours afterwards trying to work out what the heck Mills was singing! It's a great counterpunctual vocal: it rivals McCartney's on Help!, and that is no small praise!

An REM,Madness,Joan Jett,Police lineup is a dream one for me. The Police are my favorite band band REM is tied with them as my favorite too. And Madness are great and Joan Jett is awesome too. Another one of my fav bands opened for the Police, the British band XTC who were criminally ignored here in America even though they had 1 number one (I think it was #1) that only lasted a week or so that not many people seem to remember and it was late in thier career in the early 90s. The Police drummer in fact wore a shirt of XTC during those concerts and can be seen doing interviews with it on. Anyways, you can see my music taste are pretty varied but mainly diff types of rock.

Just what I was thinking. Looks like it. Compare it to earlier versions online. He lost a lot of that Rickenbacker treble punch when he switched. The tone is perhaps more rounded this way, but I miss the Rick.

Great song, but I like earlier versions better. The Rickenbacker 4001 sounds better than whatever Mills is playing here IMHO.
