And almost overnight kids at school picked up on Two Tone- it gave us a fantastic couple of years of music. This is Madness at their early best.

The genius of 2Tone was that it was so accessible to kids: school uniforms were easily adapted to suit the style; 2Tone took their road show to small-ish provincial towns so kids could feasibly go and see them on a school night and make it back home; the music was danceable. And Madness were a class act for demonstrating dance moves to their young audience. I was into rockabilly and psychobilly and - while some of the younger, upcoming bands played exciting, balls-out music - there was a lot of friction on the cusp of those styles where actual dancing was usurped by essentially rucking on the dance floor. I don't know for certain because I wasn't at those gigs but it seems to me 2Tone allowed everyone to do their thing on the dance floor, which is most admirable. Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.

Annie Nightingale. OGWT. Madness. It doesn't get much better. We all had Two-Tone or Madness Nutty Boy logo badges. Or all over our school books. Or drawn on our arms. Or all three. And I was only 8. Great days. Imagine these guys on the tiny stage at the Hope & Anchor 😂 😂

I was a huge 2 tone fan. And I remember watching Madness’ first performance on Top of the Pops and I remember my dad walking into the room to announce ‘what is this rubbish, call this music’. And I so wanted to tell him to f**k off and tell him he knows nothing about music. So now as someone with 3 kids I constantly have to bite my lip as i walk in on my kids listening today’s music as I’m always so close to saying ‘what is this crap, call this music!!’ Oh the irony!

I thought I knew every song of Madness, but 'Bed & Breakfast Man' seems to have slipped under the radar for some reason. I know the words to most of their songs, especially 'The Return of the Las Palmas 7', abd at two different music quizz nights where Madness was the featured band, I've got 100%... but 'Bread & Breakfast Man'... there's nothing. As for 'Night Boat to Cairo', the saxophone still floors me today, nearly 40 years after hearing it for the first time.
