In college I had a literature professor who was a huge R.E.M. fan, and by the end so was I. We spent time analyzing all their songs, and Michael's unique song writing. He's more of a poet then a rock star.

Cool! I had a couple of high school teachers like that. One took a group of us on an unauthorized trip to New York City's Thai section in the 80's . She played Violent Femmes albums through the trip and I became a fan. An English teacher used music lyrics to songs like "Bad Moon Rising" to teach poetry. That was SO much better than the depressed teachers who chose "Catcher in the Rye" "New York Stories" and "Return of the Native," which were just plain awful.

“E-Bow* the Letter” (1996) was allegedly inspired by a letter Michael Stipe wrote, but never sent to his troubled friend River Phoenix. The actor died of drug-induced heart failure in 1993. He was only 23 years old. The ever so lauded singer-songwriter-poet-painter-author PATTI SMITH (Patricia Lee Smith) sang backing vocals on this, a blissfully life-changing experience for Peter Buck‼️ Buck recalled : “I first saw Patti Smith perform in 1976, and I remember thinking that I would gladly give 10 years off my life to be the bass player for her group. I know Michael [Stipe] was equally as inspired by Patti, and when he came up with a Ronettes-style vocal chorus, it was obvious who we had to call. It was such an incredible experience watching Patti sing this song - a song we wrote❕I had all the cliché reactions; chills ran up and down my spine, the hair stood up on the back of my neck, etc. My life did not flash before my eyes, but it was a close thing.” The music video, helmed by Jem Alan Cohen, shows R.E.M. in Los Angeles, while Patti Smith is filmed on location in Prague, Czech Republic. 🩷💫💙 * An E-Bow is an electronic device used to play the electric guitar, creating an electromagnetic field to manipulate the strings (instead of fingers or a pick).
