This song is so good and people can relate to the meaning of the is song. My grandpa was in the Vietnam War back then and was surrounded by Agent Orange. Sadly, he had a reaction to it and got a severe heart attack. But the miraculous thing that happened is that he survived it. He passed away about 1 time in the ambulance, and 2 times at the hospital but got saved by the doctors. He is still here today and is better than ever. Thank you for the first responders and doctors who kept him alive, and RIP to the people who has passed away due to Agent Orange.

Agent orange (aka orange crush) was an herbicide used during veitnam and the maylayan emergency as a defoliant and crop killer to reduce the food and cover for guerilla fighters. The batches were contaminated however because of the high-heat method of making it, which resulted in a highly toxic chemical mixture which caused numerous defects in Vietnam vets and their children. The former us airbases are still contaminated nearly 3 times the lethal limit for exposure.

It worked in Malaya and brought victory to the British. " President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam asked the United States to conduct aerial herbicide spraying in his country" And it was approved by President Kennedy to be researched. It's not illegal to use Agent Orange, simply that it can be illegal in certain cases where it damages civilian life significantly.

Can’t listen to this without thinking of my uncle John. He died two years ago. I didn’t find out until months after his death that he was being treated for exposure to Agent Orange. At least he lived a long life until cancer caught up with him. Too many of our young men didn’t get that chance. RIP Uncle John. I didn’t know him well enough while he lived. He loved traveling to Italy and Shelter Island. Worked a long time for NBC in Manhattan. How can you grieve someone you hardly knew?

I think part of the genius of Micheal Stipe is the way he puts words together in his songs..like Bob Dylan most of his lyrics are poetry set to music. Everyone is familiar with ' serve your country overseas'.....but "serve your conscience overseas' is similiar yet profoundly different enough to capture the imagination long after the song has ended. He has dozens of lines, maybe hundreds like that throughout his songwriting career.

You might like the Tragically Hip, and the frontman Gord Downies use of wordplay / poetry. Shits fucked up, my grandfather retired in the 70’s and worked next to the lake where they dumped the left over Agent Orange. His heart disintegrated at 65 years old, VA and EPA both deny the chemicals in the lake had anything to do with it. Agent Orange was the product of Monsanto. In the 1960s and 1970s, Monsanto was a producer of Agent Orange for United States Armed Forces operations in Vietnam. And they were sued later but still are in business. They make products like RoundUp, PCBs and Dicamba and were sued in 2020. Bayer (the company that now owns them) agreed to pay numerous settlements in lawsuits involving Monsanto products

As a kid in the 80s and 90s I knew REM was good, I liked REM, I didn’t understand the lyrics to a lot of their songs. I think that’s why some bands (not REM) waned in popularity as quickly as they rose to popularity. We were just kids listening to songs written by people older than us and had no clue the depth and breadth of the lyrics in the music. The older I get the more I love and miss that point in my life.

Such a sad song for me now...my uncle has a rare cancer from agent orange which was the chemicals used in vietnam that gave many soldiers cancer, some of those vets had disfigured children becasue of it....which is what this song is about in case you didnt know...Not the drink orange crush...

Freakin Vietnam war! NO ONE EVER WINS A WAR, EXCEPT POLITICIANS!!! A 1990 report for the secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs found that the military knew that Agent Orange was harmful to personnel but took few precautions to limit exposure. Lives lost, soldiers that did make it back had mental health problems. Families that lost their loved one. Sorry to hear about your uncle.

I first heard this when I was in the 4th or 5th grade, and it changed the way I heard music. Most 11 year-old's didn't listen to this kind of music, and my friends thought I was strange for playing it so much. Yeah, I went through the teeny bopper phase, but these guys were still front and center all throughout the late 80s and 90s. Still powerful 33 years later. I heard it live on their Monster tour, and it gave me chills. I then saw them two more times and they didn't do it again. I was so disappointed not to hear it. Probably their best song.

Loved this album since the early 90's when I first found it, I wasn't even aware it was from the 80's back then, it just sounds so different from what I thought of as 80's music. Later on I learned I had really missed out on some fantastic music in the 80's...

I had heard most of REM's 90's songs, but had no idea Orange Crush existed ...until 2007 when I heard it while playing Rock Band. Man, I dunno what it was about this song, but I just freakin' loved playing the instruments, and specially singing along. I was able to sing it on Expert because of how much I liked it!! When you hear this song, you might take a trip on memory lane to the 80's or 90's, but to me, it will always be 2007-2008 when I heard Orange Crush for the first time. Great memories from a great song!

I was a music-daft 14-year-old in 1989 but, having grown up on the other side of the world in a pre-internet age, had never heard R.E.M. before. I was given this album on a tape by someone older and far cooler than me, and within a few weeks had bought and listened to all their previous albums. By then I realised they were, by a country mile, the best band of my generation. No other band has ever had such a profound effect on my musical tastes - I will love them until the day I die.

Wrong. Stop making up stories. It's documented that Cobain said in a 1992 interview with Spin magazine that he never paid much attention to REM until that year in 1992. He just heard the Automatic For The People album & liked it a lot & said "he plans on listening to more of their albums".

I was 11 when this came out. I remember it getting MTV Music Awards and tons of recognition, and being just completely bowled over by this song that was so different from everything else being played. Since then they have been my favorite band. I remember them playing this live on the Monster tour and it was SO intense. I love it. I can't believe they don't play this on the radio anymore.

Seen this band perform this live years ago Only concert have ever been too only one worth going to . They are just as good live as they are here . Wish I had recorded it didn't have the tech to record it at the time am 52 never forget it they were great .Am proud to say I saw them live in New Zealand.
