I love the slight crack in his voice when he sings “failed”. Very melancholic. He must do it purposefully because you can hear it in the record and a few other live performances.

I get chills every time i hear this song. People are like, "you know he's gay right? he's singing about another guy probably" and I tell them I don't even care. So what he is gay? I don't judge people. This is a beautiful song any way you look at it. One of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. period. Love REM and Michael Stipe

What they're saying is they specifically think about who the artist is fucking when they listen to a love song. Idk, but it sounds rather weird to only be able to enjoy literature or appreciate art when you can fully identify with the artist and his way of life.

In 1998 stipe said this song was about having big crush on someone but didn't know where he stands, even after he drops hint the size of 'IDAHO'. There was someone very special to him that always linked to word 'IDAHO' he was the same person stipe dedicated r.e.m. monster album to. Stipe said his death was the most shattering experience in his life.

A remarkable voice to a remarkable person. I heard on MTV in 1989 the Golden Palominos song, "Boy (Go). And even though there was nothing to indicate Michael Stipe was involved, I knew right away it was him on vocals! Remember that information was much harder to get than that today. It took me a while to confirm, but I was sure...

Oh life, it's bigger It's bigger than you And you are not me The lengths that I will go to The distance in your eyes Oh no, I've said too much I set it up That's me in the corner That's me in the spotlight Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no, I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try Every whisper Of every waking hour I'm choosing my confessions Trying to keep an eye on you Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool Oh no, I've said too much I set it up Consider this Consider this, the hint of the century Consider this, the slip That brought me to my knees, failed What if all these fantasies come Flailing around Now I've said too much I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream That was just a dream That's me in the corner That's me in the spotlight Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no, I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream Try, cry, why try That was just a dream Just a dream Just a dream, dream

"Listen to the song" pretty much sums it up. So many people were faked out by this song and needed it explained to them. The most embarrassing were those cult members who insisted the song could only be about a Christian lamenting that he had lost his faith. Talk about having blinders on. Or being completely deaf.
