An underrated album. Was never sure why. I loved it.

i think it had to do with the timing. The bands peak years commercially were Green through AFTP, and after that there were plenty of other newer bands that put them in the backseat in terms of relevance.

The lyrics here always got to me because it’s my complicated relationship with Christianity. My close friend is a devout Christian, and I have vacillated between atheism and desperately wanting to believe. The good thing is, he’s always been there for me and hasn’t pressured me. I told him long ago and I made him cry… I said… You are one of the main reasons I would want to be Christian. You live the life.

As a Christian, I sincerely apologize for the ignorance of so many Christians who preach hatred and indoctrinate evil. True Christianity warms the soul, awakens one to the absolute fact that service to God and His people can't be the wrong way. There is so much beauty and absolute peace in a faithful walk with the Father. He is waiting for you and all of His children with the warmest, most soothing open arms to fill your soul with truth and beauty and peace and a comfort like you have never known in your body and world weary soul.

New Adventures in Hi-Fi is one of the 20th century's great albums. It is the best 'postmodernist' album, melding different genres or sounds or lyrical themes deliberately to create contrast, juxtaposition , a journey. It's so atmospheric - the marshes, the airplane flights, the truck stops, the desert, the lights the sky. Monster -like glam rock and folk and car alarms - it's so wonderfully a journey for the listener of being on the road , yet it always has a Monster-like intellectualism to it - Be Mine, for instance, is surely a playful pop art exercise in writing a song composed of Love Hearts and greeting cards (and, indeed, postcard) sentiments, even when every word is meant.

I like to think that too, the amplifier feedback as disturbing element in this song for example, it makes me feel right about the lyrics meaning. Maybe its just a mind trick but it works fine.

I was a huge fan of early REM but by the early 90s my music tastes and the direction of their music started to diverge. Now, thanks to KZbin, I've had a chance to start exploring REM's later catalog of music and I'm discovering what i had missed. This song in particular is incredibly potent and along with other gems like "Night Swimming" it's really been in my head. "Night Swimming" perfectly takes me back to the magic of skinny dipping on late summer nights at lakes outside of Lawrence, KS in my younger days before becoming paraplegic. I'd give anything to go back.

Song makes me realize how many of us may think of ourselves as lepers--only damaged on the inside-- even though on the outside we appear perfectly normal. I've often thought, why hasn't anyone used this phrase before in a song, it's almost archetypal? A lot of Stipe lyrics are like that. The shock of the word "leper" combined with the beauty of the vocals/melody is both jarring and strongly moving.

They made a conscious choice not to pursue a career as the most popular band in the world when they got there with out of time and automatic for the people, then totally reversed with monster.
