30 years later, and this song haunts still. I was in college in '91, and this was the song on Out of Time album that my friends would skip over. And I would go home, alone, quiet, confused, and listen to only this, on loop, for hours. Still haunts me.

REM are one of the most underrated bands of all time, and are seemingly forgotten...I say "REM" to anyone and the say "who". Plus Michael Stipe is one of the best front men of all time! Appreciate them folks. There are none around today with this level of talent!
@JeffScanlon-mm5ue4 ай бұрын
I agree, supremely talented as a group and individually. Stipe was a shy artist; one who people related to and their love for him imbued him with confidence ; because he knew he reached people. Mike Mills is a classically trained musician and multi- instrumentalist with a voice and ability to write unique and layered music. True artists.
@JeffScanlon-mm5ue4 ай бұрын
I don't, however, think they are underrated. Some sects of younger people may not be acclimated with their music yet: but generally they are known as an iconic band that left an indelible stamp on music.

They worked together as a whole thing, it was their unique sound, the intensity of their music, with Michael Stipe showing himself, powerful in his weakness, always pure, impressive, of cause not always comfortable, pulling doubts and fears into light via his brilliant lyrics..They feed your thinking. Brutally honest, much to honest to a lot of people, but This to me was/ is the true spirit of R.E.M.. The listener finds himself in the words, listen to R.E.M. is like a therapy...life's seems easier listening to them... The musician M. Stipe always stayed in the tradition of a real singer/songwriter, never appeared as some kind of a pop star, which basic intention of making music's admiration and fame. I always thought of him and this band as true performers. They were like a forcefield against mainstream music. I always appreciated them for not pretending to be something they weren't. Miss this band...

They NEVER sold out! In spite of the opinions of high society media critics that that aren't worthy to wipe Michael Stipes ass! REM did what they wanted and were never pretentious about who they were. And the world is a better place for it! Yes, they had radio friendly singles. But it was on their own terms and not some douchebag record executive asking them to sell their soul! They refused. And this is why they are American music legends.

The first CD I ever purchased was a single by REM, it was 'Losing my relgieon' back in '91 and came with this as a B-side track. To this day, after listening to their entire catalgoue, this... is my favourite REM song. Thanks Michael.

This song was sent from God. And, in this live version, Angels are just there. Still knocks me off of my emotional pedestal every time I hear the waterfall..ahhhh...

I wonder what made this the best version ever? I've never heard better! Listened to different versions but this one is the dogs balls!!! Stipe is a genius, and the band of course, love mills and buck 💙💜💙💜

As it happens I prefer the Jools Holland version with BJ Cole. But that's just me.

From a sound producer's view this IS THE OPPOSITE of loudness (the "loudness war", please google this). BUT: This is music. This is dynamic. This is great!!! It reaches your heart not only your feet on the dancefloor.

This song triggered a process of healing, going through the pain of a failed marriage and just taking it in. Deeply feit. Still blows me away.

The best live version is when they performed it with Neil Young on stage!

The live version with Neil Young is great, but I still think this version is the best.

Such a great song. As I get older, it becomes a favorite in a way it wasn't in '91 to the young me. Wish I could see REM live soon.

This is my favorite R.E.M live video. It's just so raw and polished at the same time, and Peter's guitar solo has just as much soul as Michael's vocals.
