They were born during or after WW2, children of a better world, expected not to suffer, not to die from hunger, not to exterminate humans. And when they were 20, 22, all they got was a draft card and public contempt, sent overseas to shoot and bomb, taught to hate. This is how their life has been.

I knew a guy who was 15 years old when Saigon fell. The NVA rounded up all the people from the cities and put them on farms. The farms were actually armed prison camps with no food for anyone. He was starving to death. The Nork's would shoot monkey's out of trees and then laugh when the starving people would jump on the monkey and tear it apart and eat it raw. One thing he told me about life on "The Farm".... "If it moved, it was dinner!" He got out in 1977 on one of the boats. He was a boat person. He went to school, worked his ass off, and became a technician in a test lab in Saugus California. He ended up getting all of the survivors in his family out of Vietnam and bringing them over. He is a great guy!

I'm not being sarcastic, I'm really asking you. And the U.S. government are the ones that armed most of these people in the first place and worked with them until they decided they were the bad guys.

That's right. 2-4D, which is typical weedkiller used on lawns, is half of Agent Orange. It works great on Dandelions. I can't remember what the other half is, but "prolonged exposure" is the key. Spraying it once or twice a year with a mask on probably isn't going to hurt anyone, but the aerial spraying in Vietnam, where you couldn't help but breath it in, combined with the humidity, where it wouldn't evaporate and blow away quickly, made it screw up a lot of people. Michael Stipe's dad was in the military, when Michael was growing up and Michael had lived overseas, each making him familiar w/ the problems of Agent Orange and also making him a little more worldly as a teenager, enabling him to have a little more sophisticated or unusual themes in some of his songs.
@NickB19676 жыл бұрын
The keywords are "prolonged exposure". The typical suburban homeowner applying it in order to kill the weeds on his lawn is *not* getting drenched in the stuff.

Britain was the first country to use 2,4,5-T in a military capacity, helping establish a precedent for the US to use the same potently toxic substance in Viet Nam, albeit on a much larger scale. The British government assisted the US’s development of AO amid the rush for effective defoliants and herbicides for use in tropical environments, sharing research and expertise following WWII. Britain used it in the 50's in Malaysia

The Denver Broncos defense in the 80's was called "The Orange Crush". I am surprised some Denver fan didn't make a parody of the song in honor of their team. It is one of the best R.E.M. songs!

What's sad is that this sounds exactly like their other song "This one goes out to the one I love."
