Underrated? The albums “out of time” and “automatic for the people” in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s were one of the best selling albums in that era (the one with everybody hurts and losing my religion). At that time they were one of the biggest and most praised band in the world...
@susanmaggiora48004 жыл бұрын
Valerio Reichlin Yeah, they were right up there with U2 as one of the biggest bands around. From roughly ‘87 to ‘92 they were kings of the world. They’re one of those bands (U2 & Beastie Boys are 2 others that come to mind) that have been pretty much forgotten by the newer generation.
@michaelgrabner89774 жыл бұрын
Well just to keep the timeline straight...Out of time was released 91...Automatic for the people in 92.Those 2 albums were their international success..in the 80ties REM was barly known respectively they had just a small audience and they toured most of the time as support band for well known bands of that time..this song "The one I loved" released in 1987 was their first greater Hit so to say but just for those who already listened to this genre of music and those weren´t as much at that particular time and I know it because I was one of those few back then.
@susanmaggiora48004 жыл бұрын
michael grabner Yeah, it probably went a couple more years than ‘92. I put ‘92, cause that’s right around the time grunge really started to break & a lot of acts took a hit around then. After that, bands like Nirvana & Pearl Jam were kings of the world... Yeah, I was an REM fan the second I heard Fall on Me on my college radio station (WIDR).
@michaelgrabner89774 жыл бұрын
@@susanmaggiora4800 In the 80ties REM was considered as "Alternative Rock Band"...because REM´s music was for the most part never as "dirty" in sound as Grunge-music When it comes to Grunge I think of your already mentioned Nirvana, Pearl Jam but also Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Stone Temple Pilots, The Melvins, Hole, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees just to name a few.

REM was huge. And they had pretty loyal cult type following. They were a pop rock band that had an edge. Many people consider them as their favorite band. They were really big with college students in the 80's and 90's. They started out in georgia playing in college bars. And then everyone in college was listening on college radio. Then they blew up a few years later. They had about 20 hits or so. This is one of their biggest.

Its interesting how people view the albums and which is either their favorites or best. I find that people that came to R.E.M. after they had been around for 10 years enjoy Automatic For the People and Monster and that era the best while those of us that came to the party early still have an extra attachment to Murmur, Reckoning and Fables (and Pageant). Those 4 albums I'd put up against anyone's first 4 albums in history and that includes the Beatles. Its great though that everyone can come at a band that was around as long as R.E.M. was with a different perspective. Life and How to Live It :)

REM was considered college rock in the early to mid 80s. One I love and Orange crush made people take notice of the unique sound, but Losing My Religion was the song that really broke them out. Everybody hurts also helped as well. They were together for over 30 years and probably released 12 albums. Not bad for a group from a college town East of Atlanta Georgia.

One of my favorite REM songs is " E- Bow The Letter." If you end up reviewing it, please try and review the official music video. I'm not usually a fan of those but in this case it works. To me, the song evokes thoughts of how life is beautiful and also equally tragic, and also that we are surrounded by humanity but ultimately we are completely alone, and life is over in an instant. That's just my take on it. It's hauntingly beautiful, as melancholy can often be.

I first started listening to R.E.M. in 1986 and they were NOT being played on commercial radio at that time. By that time they were 4 albums deep but they had a huge following without being on top 40 radio. I knew in 1986 listening to the Life’s Rich Pageant album that it was coming. I dove deep into all their albums dating back to 1983 with Murmur. They also had material prior to that with an E.P from 1981 called Cronic Town. The One I Love came out in 1987 from the album Document. Now this was the first time I heard them on commercial radio stations that mainly played top 40 music. They just got bigger and bigger with each album after that. I don’t think they were ever underrated from their start in the very early 80’s. They just weren’t being recognized by the masses yet. Mass popularity really started in the early 90’s. With that being said, those earlier albums will always be my favorites by them. If you start doing reactions to the earlier stuff don’t expect to be able to know all the time what he’s saying or what it’s about haha. Some suggestions would be Wolves Lower (1981) Radio Free Europe (1983) Talk About The Passion (1983) Shaking Through (1983) So. Central Rain (1984) Driver 8 (1985) Can’t Get There From Here (1985) Fall On Me (1986) Begin The Begin (1986) Cuyahoga (1986) I’m sorry, that’s a lot of suggestions. That’s me controlling myself because I could easily add several more songs from the earlier years but these are some of the more popular tracks before they fully exploded into one of the biggest bands of all time. Sorry for writing so much too!!!!

REM -started as a college band only played on the college stations, but they blew up fast. I grew up with REM. I would go to the used CD shop and my money went to Tom Petty, The Police and Sting, and REM. I collected everything I could get. They had one tour, the GREEN tour, where you could get general admission if recycled a certain amount of trash from the streets of your town. When you like an REM song, listen to the whole CD. Each CD has a very definite sound. But Automatic for the People, ( my favorite, played to death) and Monster (also love) sound totally different, but it still sounds like REM. There are so many bands today that have been heavily influenced by REM. Night Swimming. Find It. Listen To it.

Well, they weren’t, but in the 80s there were sooo many great bands around! Even from down under, we had INXS, little river band, AC/DC, the Angels ect ect. Not to mention that other major bands in the world were really hitting centre stage. I went to a concert in Sydney with 100,000 plus people - LED Zepplin, Status Quo, and Deep Purple hit the stage! I grew up listening to them thanks to older siblings. They were big but have been retired? semi retired for a long time. There is a good documentary about them

I have been in an Everybody Hurts mood. My cousin committed suicide Tuesday and his funeral was yesterday. His mother is my blood auntie and she & I are a lot alike. Yesterday morning her daughter texted me and they were rushing her to the hospital. She had a heart attack. The thought of burying her son.... I know I couldn’t handle it. I cried all Tuesday night. But, listening to Everybody Hurts gives me comfort. It is a sad sounding song but it puts me back together a little bit. My auntie is doing a bit better today. Thanks to the man upstairs and the power of prayer.

Sad to hear of your loss. It's been a bad year for our family too. Lost a brother in law to suicide in January and a first cousin to illness early this month. Their passing only two weeks apart. Supporting all loved ones during this tough time. Is 2020 over yet?? 😭

For much of the beginning of their career you could probably call them underrated. They were pretty much an underground alternative or college rock band. They were well thought of but not particularly well known. This song was one of their modest hits from that time period. They didn't really hit it big until their album, Out of Time. All of their other songs that you've reacted to before this were from Out of Time and Automatic for the People, which was their next album, and it was also a big hit. If you'd like to check out some more from this earlier time period, I would recommend some of my favorites. Fall on Me, It's the End of the World as We Know it, You Are the Everything, and Orange Crush.

R.E.M. started in the early 80s as a college radio band, but in 1987 - with this song and the one that has charted again recently... - they got much bigger. In 1991, with the album Out of Time, led by the single Losing My Religion, they became one of the biggest bands on the planet, which held up for half the 90s. After their 1996 album, New Adventures in Hi-Fi, the drummer quit the band and their focus and popularity started to wane. They disbanded as of 2011, I think, to preserve the legacy and not become a Greatest Hits show.

I don't remember them ever being underated. Automatic for the People was a masterpiece. I had two copies chewed up in my stereo, I was rinsing them so much. A sadness the youth just will never understand 😂
