I'm black too. This song is about the Mona Lisa, a "simple prop" whom Da Vinci cherished and toted with him wherever he went. The Mona Lisa is actually the image of the beast from the sea discussed in the Bible's Revelations. Da Vinci himself was one head of the beast in fact. He's a vampire who can age backwards, and he's also been known as Otto von Bismarck and Adolf Hitler. These 2 statesmen were stylistically different but their underlying bone structure was identical. And the German King at the time voluntarily conferred all of his power and authority to Prince Otto for some strange reason. This unprecedented event parallels the Biblical description of the beast's ascent to power. Here's the catch: America was originally ordained by God as a free land for whites. For the Gentiles specifically, which is virtually inclusive of all whites. Therefore I have a neutral attitude towards the fact that my great-great-great grandpa Otto is the Devil. This song fills my heart with sentimental nostalgia although I know exactly what it's about.

Altogether this song is reminiscent of old European nobility whose nearest neighbors were miles away. Transportation took forever in the horse-and-carriage days, so these people would usually only gather for special occasions like balls, weddings and affairs of state. Their social skills were very formal by our standards because meeting people wasn't an everyday thing. And they learned to love their valuables, their "simple props" more than other people. These sentiments are enjoying a resurgence in our 1% era and Stipe was ahead of the game with this song.

@@TheMeanArenaA little of both. The Mona Lisa was Da Vinci's favorite simple prop. He brought her with him everywhere he went, like she was an actual human companion. The Mona Lisa really blurs the distinction between 'she' and 'it'. But she is a product of this low-tech feudal era, where the aristocrats and their similarly landowning friends went a little kooky from isolation. They probably had imaginary friends and whatnot.
@evelynzlon94928 ай бұрын
@@TheMeanArena However Hell is other people. I can't remember which author said that but it's very true. Just because the nobility lived out in the middle of nowhere doesn't mean they were sad. They may have been eccentric but for the most part I think they were happy.

It's about the Mona Lisa. She was a simple prop whom Da Vinci loved. He brought her with him everywhere he went, like she was a helpless child he had to look after. This portrait was allegedly Da Vinci in drag. The cross dresser in this video has similar hair to the Mona Lisa and her facial features resemble Da Vinci's. The Mona Lisa is actually the image of the diabolical Beast from the Sea described in the Bible. That's how I know the drag queen resembles Da Vinci. He's still alive and I've watched the videos he's made under another of his pseudonyms. The scenes where the drag queen has one foot in a pedicure soaking bowl represents the Beast's amphibious nature. It has 2 habitations of both land and sea.

Back in the early 80’s my sister’s boyfriend saw R.E.M. play when he was in college. They split up, and she never forgot him. She died from Covid and I got word from him. Although my sister and he had both lived different lives, he said she had been the love of his life. Perhaps the band wrote this song about people being used, perhaps drugs. To me it will always be a man crying it out to a lost love, the “prop” being the actual words, or poetry, of the song. ❤️

I'd argue that the "simple prop" lyric is ambiguous if we look at the words in isolation. Is the simple prop "This one" or "the one I love". Stipe has offered conflicting explanations of the lyric in interviews over time, as any good artist should. If you hear a love song I think you're just as correct as if you hear a hate song.

She got the biggest smile and said "Yes that's me!" and we had the best talk. She loved doing it, and loved getting recognized for her work. R.E.M were one of the chief pioneers of indie rock in the 80s. Not just sonically, they literally built a huge chunk of the college radio/indie venues touring circuit that many other bands then used to travel across America, particularly in the southeast radiating out from their home state of Georgia. None of that stuff really existed when they started touring and they toured *constantly*, and networked incessantly with all kinds of local radio DJs, venue owners and promoters. By the late 80s they were absolute titans in the underground and many, many other independent bands used them as a blueprint and/or got to use the list of contacts they built up. Not saying they were the only ones, many other bands were right there alongside them in other parts of the country, but definitely in the southeast they were very well known as THE band to look up to long before they signed to a major label.

I wore this tape out back then, they called it ‘College Music’ or ‘Alternative’. It was so new, so unlike all other music REM actually created a new category. Bought it on CD prolly late 80’s early 90’s an now more recently I’ve bought a third time on the cloud. I say getting old beats the alternative! Enjoy your youth for one day we will look back on this comment an say, “50? gosh we were so young then” One Love❤️

Yeah like the song "The Song Remembers When" it is a country song but the lyrics are so so true it's about how no matter how long it's been you can hear certain songs that take you back to a specific time in your life and how song can touch our souls. Music and lyrics are so beautiful and can touch our lives and bring people together doesn't matter the genre....if it touches you it touches you. I love different genres of music. If it makes me feel and touches me or if it's a catchy little tune that makes me smile then I like it

I love the production. The way the vocals/harmonies are laid out, the jangly guitars, and how everything is all drenched in reverb. So '60s sounding. At that time in the '80s it was a breath of fresh air.

My Fiancé who hadn't heard anything other than Losing my religion, has just told me how much she is loving R.E.M. and she's surprised how underrated they are. I have PTSD cognitive something. My mind is on repeat due to horrific inhumane treatment by several people several times as a teen. It was brushed under the rug allowed by school staff. Now in my 40s, everything connects with social climate esp. politics. Alls I'm saying whatever is the hype right now won't be in another 5 to 10 to 20 etc. years later. Whoever is beimg targeted this very minute, your pain is only for a brief time. Everything is temporary. Me, I atleast thank gOd I have two legs two arms, all my limbs to go out a limb for others needing help or support. GOD Bless. God HEAL YOU .

It's always amazing to see how many people think this is a love song. It isn't. It's a song about someone that keeps using other people for their own selfishness. The band has said repeatedly that it was a dark song. It quickly started to be their number one hit so they just let people think of it as they want. Listen to the lyrics, not the music. The lyrics are all the same, they just repeat. The only difference is the last verse. It changes "a simple prop to occupy my time" to: This one goes out to the one I love This one goes out to the one I've left behind Another prop has occupied my time This one goes out to the one I love

@dwightropp30146 ай бұрын
Hey, can you explain a bit what it really means then? I've noticed that most of us look very disapprovingly of the guy for his apparently abusive view of the girl in this line -- "A simple prop to occupy my time." But are we misunderstanding what's really going on there, and if so, how?
@TheMusicalElitistАй бұрын
@@dwightropp3014It’s not about the video. In an interview in the January 1988 issue of Musician magazine, he said that the song was "incredibly violent" and added, "It's very clear that it's about using people over and over again."[2] The song contains only three verses, the first two of which are identical; the third verse changes the line "A simple prop to occupy my time" to "Another prop has occupied my time." The chorus consists of just the word "fire", repeated over the backing vocal of "She's coming down on her own now / Coming down on her own" (sung by Mike Mills).

Pretty weird lyrics. This one goes out to the one I love.. Ok, love is a noble idea. Simple prop to occupy my time/fire.. Ok, that got gay really fast. A pp is the one he loves? Lol not as deep as it sounded at the beginning.
@TechSecSpaceGeek3 жыл бұрын
@@clintjones9848 Weird? No. The song is dark. It's not a love song regardless of what people seem to think. It's sung from the perspective of a sociopathic abuser, basically.
