R.E.M. is a great band and one of my 30-ish favourite artists and they have a lot of great songs. However they don't have that many absolutely stand out ones. Still. this is (imho) a solid list: 1. Country Feedback - one of their few songs that really touch me emotionally, in fact one of their few actual songs sung from the heart, by far their best song ... 2. Half a world away - beautiful melodic melancholy song 3. Try not to breathe - Automatic for the people has such a great sound including this song 4. So. Central Rain - brilliant sad song 5. Near wild heaven - another great melody from Out of time which is why it is my second favourite album despite it being a little haphazard 6. Losing my religion - classic for a good reason 7. Perfect circle - like So. Central Rain one of those early beautiful tracks 8. Strange currencies - their most recent song on the list, their later albums have great songs but not quite as good 9. But he also said that in retrospect the consensus within the band was that 'Sidewinder' was too light and should not have been included.

My top 10 rem songs (the top 30 of which are even more interchangeable than the albums) are currently.... 10 The Wrong Child (Green) 9 Drive (Automatic -I think it's 2nd best opener to any of their records...feels like a prelude to the misty sparkly road movie feel the rest of the album evolves into) 8 Feeling Gravitys Pull (my favourite REM opener I think....from Fables) 7 Diminished (Up....the heart of the album....elevates the whole record with each listen...not hard considering the rest is a sea of turd according to Joe😌....lol🤠) 6 (Untitled Hidden Track (Green) 'this song is here to keep you strong....hold her....and keep him strong.... oh and the lyrics "I made a list!" Too hard to narrow to a top 10 list, so I'll list my favorite song from each album. 1. Murmur: Shaking Through Love where this is sequenced. The emotional climax of the album. The piano adds beautifully to it as well. 2. Reckoning: So. Central Rain Possibly my favorite song in their whole catalog. Piano shows up as a secret weapon once again! 3. Fables of the Reconstruction: Can't Get There From Here Super fun song on an otherwise dark album. 4. Lifes Rich Pageant: Swan Swan H Hard album to choose. I might possibly like the three-song run that closes the record even more than the three songs at the start. 5. Document: The One I Love Powerful song. Stipe never said so much in so few lyrics. 6. Green: World Leader Pretend Here you have the opposite: Some of the densest lyrics Stipe ever wrote. 7. Out of Time: Losing my Religion Leave it to REM to end up with their quintessential, generation-defining song when Stipe finally caves in to writing lyrics about unrequited love. 8. Automatic for the People: Nightswimming Nostalgia is a powerful feeling. 9. Monster: Strange Currencies 10. New Adventures in Hi-Fi: Undertow 11. Up: Daysleeper I've known some people in my life who this song can easily apply to. 12. Reveal: I'll Take the Rain Water is a recurring theme in many of my favorite Stipe lyrics. 13. Around the Sun: Leaving New York 14. Accelerate: Until the Day is Done Underrated, dark song in their catalog. 15. Collapse into Now: Walk it Back A song that doesn't receive much attention, but I've always responded quite powerfully to it. Could have worked as the closing track.

I love REM but I can't really pen down a favorites list from them (for most artists this isn't a problem for me) but after the top 5, the next 15 or songs are all pretty even for me, and could change constantly. 10. Drive-What's you problem with this song Jason? 9. Gardening at NIght 8. Wolves, Lower - With a mere 5 songs Chronic Town would be my #3 album, it's impressively good. 7. NIghtswimming - One I didn't like at first, too meandering for my taste, but has grown on me overtime and so nostalgic sounding. 6. Exhuming McCarthy - my favorite deep cut. 5. Losing My Religion - At one time my favorite, because I thought it sounded cool and the lyrics seemed deep...but now I think the lyrics don't really say much, they sound like they're saying something but they're really not. 4. The One I Love - 3. So. Central Rain - People should go look at REM's fist television performance on Letterman. They perform Radio Free Europe and this song (which didn't even have a title yet) but between songs Letterman comes out and talks to Mills and Buck. I remember watching and wondering where Michael was, when I saw him weirdly sitting down hiding behind Buck, it's so weird. Can you imagine any front man doing that? 2. It's the End of the World - I love singing this. So much fun. 1. Don't Go Back to Rockville - "At night I drink myself to sleep and pretend I don't care that you're not here with me" Disappointed that this didn't make anyone's list as this is by far my favorite. Lyrics written by Mills which gives it a more straight forward less poetic quality than Stipe's (especially in the early years) which I really appreciate. Love the video guys as always.

I really loved R.E.M.'s sound when they started. Saw them in concert twice in the 80s and they were great shows. Some of their later albums did nothing for me. It may be an unpopular opinion but I was not really sad to see them go. Not much on their last 6 or so albums even appealed to me. As you will see, I do think they had excellent taste in covers and the Velvet Underground covers listed below are some of the best non-VU versions of those songs I have ever heard. 1. That is an excellent test of how deep a given band's catalog is. Nice bit of thinking there, Chris. While I don't really "believe in" top 10 lists I could certainly imagine having songs like "Sitting Still" or "The Wrong Child". or "The Flowers of Guatemala", songs that no one else seems to mention, on it. REM was a band that had a lot of ways create moments of connection.
