As Eddie Vedder once joked, maybe the stage lights bounced off Mike's many rhinestone suits and caused Bill's aneurysm.

No wonder the drummer got sick. I'm feeling sick just watching at those lights in the video. OMG.

Just brilliant. I really hated how they dumbed this song down in the later years. Lost the tremolo and PB introducing those 'licks' throughout the song as opposed to only following the bridge. But can't win them all! Really miss REM!

My name is Kenneth. And when that song was released in 1994/95 my wife kept teasing me by asking me that question. She stop asking after we had 6 children. I guess the question was answered. (If you know what I mean).

I LOVE Bill Berry! Though he may not be a technical drummer with super flashy chops, he managed to find the perfect beats for REM tunes and has played them flawlessly.

+Eduardo Rivera I just don't see why people have to comment on the style of every musician out there. unless you can do better piss off. REM were not technical at all, doesn't mean they are not not talented. only reason people make comments like you did, jealousy.. that pretty much says it all. put up or shut up.

+Jason Mixon What the hell? I love REM. If you weren't so clouded by negativity you would have been able to see that I am a fan and did not bash on the band at all. I merely admired Bill Berry's drumming style for being a suiting style for the band. Im not gonna bother explaining my comment because its pretty easy to see that. Shit, I've even made mix CD's for my girlfriend and now she's into them. Quit being such a diva. ;)

Regarding the various technical abilities of the members - everyone played to the song. It wasn't about grabbing an opportunity to show off some chops, it was about creating and performing the song. More than most bands, they were a band. Not a singer and back up, or singer with star guitarist, etc. It's why they always sound like REM, and why they spent about half of their career trying to not sound like REM. And just creating a new way to sound like REM.
@15awesomehighfive8 жыл бұрын
Eddie Vedder sure loved Mike Mills' jackets, hard not to :) One great bass player too, and a backup vocalist who should be a front man because of how good he sings. Sadly for him, REM had Stipe, so backup it is :D

I love how Monster is supposedly the 'rock' album when it's pretty slow tempoed and really classic WB REM poppier song constructions (Stand, pop song 89, get up, radio song). I mean, the guitar stuff is just annoyingly distorted and reverbed. Meanwhile New Adventures rocks and Buck's guitar playing is the perfect combo of rock riffs with explorative amp squeals and ringing notes. And the songs on it are uniquely built and very 90s in their emotive angle
