For the first story: OP was not lying about how dark Madoka Magica gets. The voice actors apparently cried in the studio from how dark it was, and the death EP likely is referring to, was Mami’s who gets her head eaten by a monster, with all foreshadowing implying that the power of friendship is going to prevail

@@joanhill4666 When I was younger I always looked at the age rating on manga on the back of the book. (I'd read novels too, however that's a different story.) It gives you an idea what type of audience it's for, and the content in it. I typically read romance manga, so I had to be careful not to accidentally pick a book with a rating higher than my age at the time. My mother had no idea what manga was so I decided everything I read back then. I still decide what I read to this day, but it's nicer not being behind a rating wall. (Only allowed to buy books in my age range.)

You're correct! Being loud on Japanese transport is extremely rude. In fact, if you get a phone call on the train, no matter how important it is, you answer, whisper "I'm on the train right now, I'll call you back" and hang up. (Don't worry, it's the culture there so if it is an extremely important call 9 times out of 10 they don't mind). So after that fiasco, no one would give up their seat for the mother. If she asked quietly and nicely, chances are someone would've let her. But she screwed herself over

@@MikayaAkyo Nah. The anime for Madoka Magica came first. The manga was based on early draft of the anime when it was under production and came out later. They are very similar besides a few details here and there. Homura's shield is in the shape of a diamond instead of a circle. The familiars for the Walpurgis Night are in the shape of dead magical girls, etc. But the Anime didn't cut anything. Though to be fair.... you do actually see Mami's head being riped from her body in the Manga. So you do have a point that somethings had to be censored for the show.

I HIGHLY recommend Kazumi and Suzune but Tart Magica has some of the most interesting characters. Oriko is very important as it frames everything and literally the reason why Mami is hostile towards Homura. You can find all of these stories + Nagisa Momoe (Charlotte/Bébé) in the Magia record Mobile game visual novel that has many of its stories on KZbin. The Magia record anime was fantastic despite losing all of its budget mid season 2 and has a commendable effort resolving the story in 4 episodes. Watch Magia record for Holy Mami vs Sayaka

A friend of mine had a similar experience to the first story. He worked in HMV, and this woman marched up to him holding an anime DVD case. The anime in question was very violent, gorey, and explicit and as such had a big '18' age rating on a big red sticker on it (Think something like Black Lagoon or Elfen Leid kind of content). She slammed it down on his counter and went on a tirade demanding a full refund plus compensation because she bought it for her child and it scared the hell out of them. He pointed to the big '18' sticker, and she screamed that it was 'just a cartoon' and 'cartoons were for kids'. Normally the policy was to give store credit, but he explained the situation to his manager who agreed to give the Karen back her money. Then it turned out the disc wasn't in the case because this woman has snapped it in half because it was 'filth'. She was not happy when they refused her the refund. This was not the first time he'd had to deal with a customer like that. These people exist and in higher numbers than you'd hope.

You have to remember that animation wasn't originally aimed at kids. Once the 70s hit and TV came along, and especially when Hannah Barabara began to make animation mostly for kids, it became viewed as a "kids thing". Snow White was actually made for adults, and Disney believed kids wouldn't appreciate animation, seeing it as the ultimate form of 2D artistic style, able to make worlds limited only by the creators perception. So disney always aimed at kids and even our view Snow White is for children is complete BS and a modern POV. Its hard to believe it was ever only aimed at kids, but it was the first full-feature animation and was just made to prove a point (and nearly bankrupt its company in the process). In Japan, they had the I think it was the 1940s world fair, which introduced them to Disney animation, which lead to the start of their animation industry. Since they never went though that phase, animation never got reduced to a "kids only" routine. Though until the 2000s, most anime was poorly animated and on the cheap, while western animation got HQ in the mid-90s thanks to late 80s syndication of shows paying off, and the beginning of the raise of Cartoon Network fueled a decade of improved quality in the 90s. This lead to Nickelodeon also wanting a piece of that pie. Thus began a rivalry which pushed animation, when digital animation came along in the 2000s, animation lept further then before as newer content allowed for complex animation to be made even cheaper then it had before. Buy this point, anime has mostly caught out since they exported many of their shows abroad which earnt a lot of money, though for a long time animation was still made traditionally. A lot of adults my father's age (his in his late 70s), believed Japanese comics were made only to be pornographic, because the people that age only knew it from the handful fo adult stuff that came over in the 70s and 80s,though they remain ignorant anyway since it was that uncommon. Its mostly adults my age who barely understand it, from the mid/late 80s onwards, and get confused because we only saw it via the likes of pokemon, etc. They presume its like any other animation and trying to explain to people that the disconnection from adult animation that occurred in the west in the TV era, never occurred in Japan. So yeah, they make animation for all ages. Even in terms of comics, a lot of American comics were banned for a long time to "protect children" about the same era that cartoons were on TV. Most of those bans have since been lifted, like the ban on merchandise tie-ins with animation. That is actually why the 80s had a cartoon boom as everyone and their grandma tried to snap up a franchise to profit from. Anyway, thats a "rough" history of what this nonsense believe "animation and cartoons are just for kids" mentality the west has is stemming from. A rough time when TV came along. Before that, they used to show cartoon shorts before any film aimed mostly at adults (because movies and films never really were aimed at kids back then).

First Story: "Mature adults don’t read this" jokes on this Karen, there are conventions "mature adults" go to. Also, OP did warn her multiple times but she refused to listen. Also, it was bothering hearing how rSlash pronounced manga 😭 Second Story: If Kate wants all of these subscriptions, there is a easy way to get them: buy the subscriptions. Imagine thinking u are entitled to someone else's subscription services because u are too broke to pay the $15 a month? The absolute audacity to change the password to someone else's Netlfix account is wild Third Story; Ahhh the sweet taste of karma. This Karen really thought that yelling out that she was American was going to be enough to allow her to cut the line. Also, it bothered me when she said "I’m American, I take priority", she didn’t have the proof of it so obviously she was lying. I hope she had fun at the back of the line though Fourth Story: OP included in that list appearant looking pregnant women. I guess this Karen thought that because she isn’t pregnant and the kid is in the world now, she is still entitled to the priority seating Fifth Story: Wooow, no wonder why OP is low contact and OP's sister is no contact. After all the verbal abuse and blatant favoritism, if I was OP I would’ve done the same as OP's sister and went 100% no contact. OP's step-mom is a narcissist

This gives me war flashbacks. My mother bullied me in my teens about liking anime and cartoons (I’m female). She was so convinced that cartoons were for little kids and that, as a young woman, I needed more “normal” shows (alternates from her: Glee, which, while not a bad show, was not my cup of tea, and I grew to hate it because they were always pushing me). My mom is finally figuring out that, yes, MANY adults are into this stuff, that it’s a “normal” interest. Anime and Manga is just a medium. It spans all interests and ages.

13:00 I'm about to leave to study abroad in Japan, and I can 100% confirm this as true. Japan as a culture highly values mutual respect and courtesy, and this includes making an effort to not be a bother to others. I've done research to make sure I know the social etiquette and won't be rude in public, and not only are you not supposed to be loud on the public transit, you're not meant to talk AT ALL. Not even on your phone. There's sometimes one noise-designated car if it's a long-distance train, but otherwise, public transit is meant to be silent. No one looked at the EM or responded to her because they weren't about to be just as rude as her and disturb the peace as well.

I actually had a similar interaction at the library, but the mom was far more pleasant. I wasn't an employee, I was just looking for something to borrow myself, when the mom and her daughter were about to pick out a more mature anime movie. I let the mom know that she should check the rating, because not all anime was for kids. She was grateful I helped keep her kid from watching something that wasn't age appropriate. Also, I used to be a live in babysitter for my sister, and had shown her step-daughter my own favorite anime, which was totally fine for kids. She wanted to try some more anime, so I took her to the library to find something(this was before streaming was accessible, and everything posted on the internet was pirated), and she picked out The Melancoly of Haruhi Suzumia. I hadn't seen it yet, and there was no rating at all on the back, so I told her that I wanted to watch it first to make sure it was appropriate. I enjoyed it, but the moment I saw Haruhi groping her friend and commenting on her boob size, I immediately knew this would not be good for my 10 year old niece.

I didn't have the thought of adding the step mother in, and everything, but as soon as I heard the line, "God forbid I get hit by a bus, but what would you get to memorialize me?" My first thought was, "A bus..."

Explaining such cultured content to a Karen would be like talking to a dead fish. 15:28 I had a similar thought. OP could just deadpan answer "The bus".

One thing I just CAN'T get enough of about retail stories is the condescending "You obviously don't know what you're talking about." like lady SHE WORKS THERE!

For the first story I immediately was thinking “don’t tell me it’s Madoka” when she stopped. That would be potentially scarring for a kid.

I've told my now 11, then 8-9 year old niece flat out when she saw Madoka on Netflix it's a good show, but it's deliberately psychological horror dressed up with magical girl sprinkles to mislead you until the first horrific death, to which she said "I'll wait until I'm a bit older to be scarred, thanks".

If I was the sales person in the first story, I would had simply grabbed one of the 16+ manga (best a doujin) and opened on a random page like "is this childish enough for you"
