栃木県日光市の西側の「いろは坂」をのぼった先に広がるのが標高約600m以上の奥日光エリア。湯ノ湖や栃木県最大の湖である「中禅寺湖」、「西ノ湖」と個性的な湖や滝が点在し、さらに「戦場ヶ原」や「小田代ヶ原」では、草紅葉やミズナラの黄葉など、多彩な色合いが広がる。中でも「中禅寺湖」の湖畔にはカエデ、ウルシ、ブナなどが茂り、「八丁出島」周辺では、カエデやブナが色鮮やかな赤や黄色に染まり、湖から見える紅葉も美しい。「湯ノ湖」から東へと１〜２週間づらして、紅葉が麓へと移動して「いろは坂」へと移動していく。
