I'm reminded of a scifi novel, forgot the name, where humans captured alien tech that put a space worthy bubble around any structure and allowed it to travel at spacey speeds. They converted modern water warships but soon ran out of those. Desperate for more vessels they grabbed anything that could mount the device and even drafted wooden ships out of museums. One memorable line was when the human admiral watched a viking longboat zoom by said "Could they at least stop rowing their oars!"
