A popular device used for quotation and storytelling.
This began on the *chan imageboards, where quoting text places a Less or Greater than symbol in front of it, turning it green. This effect can also be done manually. Before long, this feature was put to innovative use. When quoting another post, greentext is frequently used for summary, criticism, and ridicule. Its other major use is storytelling, in which a lengthy story is told through fragmentary statements in greentext.
Greentext became highly popular for both of these functions due to its convenience. When quoting a post, it is easier to summarize than to respond in full. When telling a story, stringing together sentence fragments is a grammatically easier alternative to prose composition (it also makes for lighter reading).
This feature has become so widespread that it is sometimes used outside of imageboards (eg KZbin comments).

Beware the happy and joyful apex predator. he is loud, clumpsy, spews his heart and emotions out for everyone to see and most importantly he does all of that as part of his socialisation ritual. he wants all that are around him to know where he is at all times so that they are not surprised or threatened by his heritage. beware when this beast falls silent for it now has need of the ancient memories of the hunter and killer. beware the joyful man that loses the smile on his face and the warmth in his heart because of the sensless cruelty of others. beware the one who falls silent in the wake of children dying instead of igniting their heart in rage. beware the cold and logical fury that transforms the gentle giant into a soulless mashine of untold cruelty. beware the time he loses his way back into the light.
