Sony seems to rather sell you more bodies than to solve issues with firmware updates.
@loudandclearmedia Жыл бұрын
Yes, but in fairness to that conversation, Canon has a tendency to cripple the hell out of new bodies and later implement those features in firmware updates, whereas Sony has those features onboard from the jump but going forward has very lackluster firmware updates. The end result I think is pretty competitive, but I do like better the Canon approach.
@aarong2374 Жыл бұрын
@@loudandclearmedia So true about Canon. I do like what they are doing with R5C and some of their newer bodies. Less crippling than they ought to do. What's frustrating is buying the A1 and not getting firmware updates to get similar features than their less expensive bodies.
@loudandclearmedia Жыл бұрын
@@aarong2374 the A1 was my main stills body for a couple years, and for me, those newer features wouldn't have made a difference. Having said that, I completely understand and sympathize with the A1 owners who WOULD use the breathing compensation and such, so yeah, I get the argument. $6500 is a pile of money to spend on a flagship product that nowadays seems to be a lower priority to Sony than it ought to be.

Gotta love a tasty ramble. Out of curiosity, what exactly was happening with the Canons vs Sonys in the highlights? You're metering 1 stop under, but even then the Canon would be a bit clipped? Or is it that, exposed the same, there woold just be more information recoverable from the Sonys?
@loudandclearmedia Жыл бұрын
Both of those reasons you pointed out are involved. It’s a combination of the Sony metering, especially the A1, being better than the Canon and the flexibility of the file. Canon’s evaluative metering misses by up to a stop depending on the metering of the focus point, so if you don’t shoot at least a stop under for safety it’ll occasionally blow highlights.
@reelsteelproductions2020 Жыл бұрын
@@loudandclearmedia Gotcha. So you can get the same (or at least very similar) results with the Canon, but it means babysitting it a bit more.
@loudandclearmedia Жыл бұрын
@@reelsteelproductions2020 that's a fair way to put it. Either babysit now, or tweak later in post. Either way, it's not as solid as the Sony options for working quickly without much effort.

Love it Brian. I know in the past you’ve said that R5C Raw isn’t really worth it. Are you shooting Clog3 in XFAVC 4k then?
@loudandclearmedia Жыл бұрын
Usually yeah. I still dabble in the RAW every now and then since it seems like the highlight rolloff when interpreted with a CLOG2 curve is just a little softer and less clippy. I haven’t done any extensive side by sides to absolutely confirm that though…it just feels that way. Canon RAW sucks though. I have a lot of time with both BRAW and R3D…I’d take either one of those over canons RAW any day.
@sneakergearz Жыл бұрын
As Sony has more dynamic range and the A1 is more than capable as the R5C, why were to A1’s never used vs using 3 Sonys bodies? Are you still using Sony for your personal use?
@loudandclearmedia Жыл бұрын
Good question. Simply put, I found the feature set of the A7Siii better for real estate video than A1. The flippy screen doesn't get blocked by a gimbal motor like the A1's tilt screen does (which is difficult to work with while touch tracking on a gimbal), and 4K60 AND 4K120 in A7Siii is a full sensor read VS the A1's binned 4k60. I have sold all of my Sony gear except for a few lenses, CFX-A cards and batteries, and that's just because that stuff hasn't sold yet.

Great in-depth video! I recognized your name from Carlos Quentinero's channel. I used Canon cams for many years and now the R5 and I understand what you're talking about. Maybe this workflow can be of little help..? I only expose after 3 channel RGB histogram, letting a little bit of space between the brightest part of the histogram to the end of it. One of the colors could be more saturated than the others therefore very important to see all 3. Combining it with low contrast setting for the picture profile being used, in this way it is displaying a bit closer to the raw files DR. I use Capture One and I think one strength it has beside good color rendition is very good highlight recovery. I always test one exposure 2/3 stops brighter and more often than not that photo works out really well in the highlights. Capture One has now also a very fast app for iPhone and iPad much better than Canon's app that loses connection too fast.
@loudandclearmedia Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughts, Martin. It sounds like we're exposing pretty similarly, actually. The main difference being that you are doing it off of the RGB histogram, while I'm more run and gunning/ballparking it by telling the camera to adjust shutter speed to 1 stop under via the evaluative metering. It's likely getting us to about the same place, your technique favoring accuracy, and mine speed. Great tip about the Capture One app...I didn't even know that was a thing. Cheers!
@martinekwall4671 Жыл бұрын
@@loudandclearmedia Yes, same issue tackled slightly different. If you have the RGB histogram displayed you can get confirmation if the cameras exposure evaluation is spot on or not. You could still adjust it with your exposure comp wheel. For example if the camera exposes little bit darker than necessary adding just 2/3 stop more light makes a big difference in the clarity of the shadows on Canon sensors per my experience.

I think the RED/Canon collaboration is future proof. I love the Canon image. That's what it's all about. I never shot with a RED. The image is beautiful as well. I have a feeling Canon will drop a box camera that will change things a bit. A Komodoesque with ND's and great codecs. If the image I can get from my C70's and R5c is as good as it gets... I'm just fine with that. All good.

I still look for Blackmagic to continue to disrupt. They’ve been quiet of late. The last time they were quiet, they dropped a 12K cinema camera, which admittedly flopped pretty hard, but it was the kind of balls-out move Blackmagic does with more frequency than anyone else. RED is probably a really close second in that behavior. Not as often is something so shocking and disruptive coming from the major manufacturers. Their R&D is complicated too much by factors outside of just making badass cameras.

Canon just released firmware 1.0.40 it greatly improves battery life in 4k and auto focus has been improved also. Looking forward to your thoughts on the new firmware. Also I would suggest you try the r3 I think it will suprise you and it definitely competes and imo beats the a1 .
@loudandclearmedia Жыл бұрын
I've eyeballed the R3 at least a couple times before, but I disagree with you that it has anything on the A1. The A1 is twice the resolution, almost a full stop greater ambient light control when using strobes (1/400th flash synch vs the R3s 1/250th) and has dual, symmetrical fast media onboard in the CFX-A cards enabling true dual writing/backup in all of its modes. Now, I'm not knocking the R3...it's both strange and awesome at the same time, but the capabilities of A1 are just mind bending. For the reason of resolution alone, I think the R5 variants are closer competitors to A1, honestly. As far as the firmware goes, I probably won't upgrade for a while. My stuff is all stable right now and I've made that mistake in the past. 😂🍻

Sony is dragging
@loudandclearmedia Жыл бұрын
To me, it feels like Sony is really focusing on selling lower tier products to the masses and while all of these companies do that, Canon included, it just seems like such a focus with Sony of late. Canon is gearing up for the R1 and R5ii before the Olympics next year while simultaneously developing fast tele zooms and trying to keep quality control at the high end by enforcing design patents. Meanwhile, Sony's over here like "hey...have you seen our latest vlogging camera? 600 bucks and it comes in pink...pretty awesome right!?" 🙄

Most of these cameras do the same basic stuff. It's so old, dusty,, petty, and infantile to keep comparing brands over and over ,and it's quite TIRED. We have enough to choose from to fit everyone, including formats, yet you can close your eyes, click your mouse, see this same exact content 6,488 times. Sony makes so many models and sell so many, they can care less about anecdotal stories about who is leaving them. Sony is NOT going to cry, and for the past 5- years ,they have been first and second in the WHOLE ILC game. The door is not hitting Sony it's hitting whomever leaves and runs to Canon, which actually keeps them on their toes. The more people go back and forth with Canon and Sony, the more they both dominate the market. I live in NYC and you can tip over people with Canon and Sony, and MOST of the canons are still nice, big ole DSLRs. Children carry DSLRs and don't cry here. I was at an event in midtown, and I had a Pentax and 2 Sonys. The guy filming the event had a Sony. All that stuff about exposure only has to do with mastering the camera, and aint nobody doing lens changes unless they have a partner, or want to carry all that damn junk. Here, if you pull out a tripod, then you run the risk of being asked for a permit, and I also saw that in New Orleans. Who NEEDS 8k? Only on KZbin do people talk about shooting in 8k. Plus, Canon made the EasyBake Oven R5, and what person with an IQ or 23 wants a camera that heats up and cannot work? Who NEEDS 8k or even more than 50MP to do most shooting globally? It's not like most of us are paying mortgages and getting wealthy with a camera, so most of that is incessant chatter.
