Thank you. What camera and lens do you recommend for interior remodelers and interior painters? We usually work and finish work late in the day and it’s low light conditions specially in the winter. Sometimes I need to set the camera to film for about few minutes. I’m currently using the iPhone but I heard there’s a feature on a camera that takes and combines 3 pictures in one. Thanks

I skipped the R3 and jumped to the R1 flappy port covers and all on the basis that this will cover the next 4-5 years. It was preordered since the summer and since then R3 pricing is looking very attractive. I do think R3 was supposed to be the original R1 and this is the mark 2. And performance? It's unbelievably good. Picked it up on Friday and first job delivered a card filled with 100% perfect sellable pics.

I probably shouldn't know that they are shipping...Lord knows I've spent enough this year already! 😆 You bring up a good point about the relative pricing between the two models though. The R1 will absolutely be a better overall camera, as it should be, but it's easy to see the R3 at its current price as the much better value. R3 is still such a beast.

I am not a Canon user, I am an older photographer and when I saw and held the R3 I thought it was the prettiest and nicest feeling camera I have ever held. I think its time to be honest and realize all these modern cameras are just amazing at what they can do. So good in fact I wonder if it will stifle the need to become a good skilled PHOTOGRAPHER. My view may be contrarian, but I like a small amount of missed shots because it keeps me honest and at the top of my game. I shoot alot of wildlife with an original A9. I know the bodies today are more advanced especially in the subject tracking area. I picked up a 6700 which has the latest and greatest from Sony and I was amazed how it preselects the head and eyes of the animals before I even begin to initiate focus but I still love my older older A9 body because it tests me just a bit more. I guess I enjoy the challenge more than the result.

To the spirit of your point there, a think a lot of people are feeling that exact same way, which is one of the reasons the fixed lens, manual controls "vintage throwback" cameras are so hot right now. The monster, do everything R3s and A1s of the world are great commercial tools in that they allow you to work very quickly but yeah, at the expense of some creativity for sure. I recently bought a Leica Q3 43 which is a tiny, fixed focal length, not nearly as fully featured or blazingly fast camera. It forces me to think a bit more, to slow down. I'm very much enjoying it.

It's got to be, or why else would they do it. The Sony A1 was my workhorse for a couple years before I moved over to Canon, and I would always point to its potato screen as proof that it was (and still is IMHO) the best full frame camera in the world. Sony didn't want to strip out anything that would affect image quality or speed, and the top-floor accountants wouldn't let them price it a nickel past $6500, so potato screen it is. I have a feeling the same thing is going on with R1.

Hardly, what I would call fails. The lower rear screen resolution is irrelevant if you shoot photos and likely provides better battery life in the R1 vs. the R3. The R3 was a stop gate measure until Canon finalized the R1. I expect to see a R1 Mk2 in 2028.

The battery life thing with the screen is a good point I hadn't considered, but I disagree about the resolution being irrelevant. For instance, if I'm shooting an interior and have the camera on sticks smashed into some corner it's nice to see the focus peaking since I won't in that case be able to use the EVF. Or that same example with zoom to manual focus enabled. Look, I'm not saying the R1 is a bad camera...far from it. I'm saying its the little things that should be BETTER with the newer, more expensive, more upmarket model. In this case, strangely, these ones are not.

There already is an R3ii it’s called the R1. And the R3 was the original R1 lol. Everyone knows it. They just don’t admit it. The real flagship is the R5ii if it was a full size body and cross point focus. Canon has a really good thing going if they could just put it all together in one body. The R1 should have a 4.1 mill lcd screen that tilts and flips. It also should have had a 30-35 mp sensor with all the reset of the specs of that sensor 2.7ms readout speed etc… Honestly that’s all it really needed and no one would be saying anything negative. This is the day of cheap, fast storage, 5G cell networks and computers you can hold in one hand that would throttle most purpose-built editing rigs just a few years back. Regarding small and light? It is a simple fact that potential resolution increases with the size of the objective. So small means that even with a well-designed and corrected lens you will never have the same resolution/sharpness as you could achieve with a larger lens. If you think about the most expensive cameras known to man? Those are professional astronomical telescopes - and the best go to enormous size for light-gathering and resolution. For terrestrial photography it is also true that the larger objective lens will get you more signal for lower SNR and will also get you more resolution. The little lenses can be amazing, but there is no substitute for bigger. You can argue for better designs and better glass but in optics, size really does matter.
@loudandclearmedia
@loudandclearmedia Ай бұрын
I agree, to a point. OTOH, I have a tiny 43mm f2 apochromatic Leica lens that you'd probably be pretty impressed by. It's no doubt still leveraging software-based corrections, but still, its BRUTALLY sharp.
@oldguy1030
@oldguy1030 Ай бұрын
@@loudandclearmedia Oh, I can be pretty happy with smaller optics but it is a matter of Physics that, given the same quality of design and build, - the bigger objective will gather more light for better SNR - and will have better resolution. Any disagreement is wrong. But if the quality of design and build are not equal? The smaller optic may prevail if it was made in a superior manner. Leica is well known for superior optics! Sort of parenthetically? Back early on in telescope building they would describe their optics in terms of their LENGTH, not the diameter of their objective lens or mirror. Their optical designs were not as sophisticated or complex. So you could have a scope measured in METERS because the high focal ratio (the ratio of the focal length to the diameter of the objective) they would have less aberration - for refractors that aberration most obviously being chromatic. Now we refer to our telescopes by the diameter of the objective because (in simplistic terms) that is the limiting factor in terms of SNR and resolution. I have a 101mm refractor at F5.4 which has nearly perfect optics (nothing is quite perfect) but it still cannot resolve things which are nicely resolved with the less-sophisticated optics of my 12" reflector. But for a variety of reasons I'd generally prefer the smaller refractor on most deep sky images. If I were doing planetary imaging I'd be wanting to fire up the 10" or 11" Schmidt-Cassegrain because of their long focal lengths. Those are now "ifs" since I found I really didn't like astrophotography enough to "waste" my time on it. All that said? Don't get me wrong. I don't disparage smaller optics. My main terrestrial camera pleases me greatly with much smaller optics. I'm actually considering even smaller optics as I covet the Sony RX100 VII but am holding off in part because I suspect I might be happier with a Ricoh GR4 (apparently due in the first quarter of 2025). Yup, I can respect a small lens quite a lot and plan to further invest in small optics in the foreseeable future. And it doesn't surprise me at all that the Leica is amazing!
@loudandclearmedia
@loudandclearmedia Ай бұрын
@@oldguy1030 Well put. I too like small optics. Well, let me explain that. Larger lenses are what I use to get paid. Big, fast full frame zooms. They are a tool. However, when I'm not working and would rather just enjoy photography (difficult to do when you make a living as a photographer), I tend to favor tiny setups. The kind of thing that attract no attention and if you brought it on a paid gig, there's a near certainty you'd get the "please tell me you're not using that" look from your client. It's with these compact setups I can stop being a photographer and instead just have fun being creative. In fact, I'm working on a video of that newly acquired Leica system that I mentioned. The Q3 43. Its pretty bonkers in all the right ways, and one of the most fun things about it is no one but a legit camera nerd would guess just by looking that it has even a fraction of the quality and capability it does.

For amateurs and youtubers for sure but for high end crew based work where budget dictates equipment hire, perhaps not so much. I am on set each week on series and feature for theatrically relased and stream servivice (netflix, amazon, apple tv) and as much as i am a fan of price point/value of them I have only seen them on set used to capture bts footage. Definitely on short films and some music videos but not on any other projects. Right now it is dominated by Sony venice, Various RED and ARRI. Memtion of red being killed by any company and Steven Soderbergh enters the chat.. I think the reality is that lower tier cameras are plenty and black magic is cleaning up for consumers that are used to photographic cameras and mirrorless cameras being used in place of expensive cinema cameras for the low end and entry point especially related to solo shooters. Crash caneras like the red komodo offer bomb proof tiny housing with no artifacts or need to try to fix them in post when time is money. A follow focus and RAW output makes them a fantastic work hack since in the hands of a true professional (not amatuer enthusiast) you can expose using traffic light system and end up with flawless file that as it has no rolling shutter, can also be stablised to look like it was shot on a gimbol by just choosing a focal lemgth to match desired end case. Nikon buying red is a wild card and gives the lower end market pause for purchasing the under 10k usd red options but the others are still doing what they always did. The great thing about pyxis is that the great pocket camera which is awkward to use and rig has finally been stuck in the form factor it deserves. The price is great in its tier. People just getting into their first "cinema" cameras will either love the pyxis or be disappointed due to expectations but it will be in the end of the day down to what actually gets you to turn it on and use it to make great material that is the best for you and peiple that have to work with what you produce.

This is a great take. I shoot both film and digital and share lenses between my EOS-1 and EOS R. I've noticed that the EF lenses designed after digital became the norm are incredible on a film body. I picked up the 50 1.2 and 14-35 4 this year. I had a friend that hated the 50 on her 5D mk IV. She said it wasn't very sharp and got rid of it. On the film body it is sharper than the film can resolve. On the EOS R, the AF makes it easy to shoot wide open. The 14-35 replaced my 17-40. On the digital body, it is pretty mid. On the film body, it is wonderfully sharp. On the Hasselblad point, I wonder how much that camera and lens system has to do with historic Hassleblad designs. Hasselblad is owned by DJI now. The drone I use says it has a Hasselblad lens. I really doubt Hasselblad had much to do with the design. I feel like DJI just bought the company for the name.

Hasselblad is a difficult nut to crack these days. It's a lot like the Nikon/RED thing where it's difficult to discern if DJI ownership means Hasselblad will largely remain the same with the same people onboard but now have more R&D resources available (the best-case scenario), or if the larger company will cheapen quality while simultaneously relying on the Hasselblad name to increase margins.

Good video. I bought the 35mm f/1.4 for my Canon R5. With the R5 and the LR corrections I have no issues. However, I was a Nikon shooter for decades. I believe for my type of shooting my older DSLR's and the F mount lenses would be just as good. Again for my type of shooting. I am retired now, I do not shoot pro work or need the fastest, sharpest lens. Yes, lighter and smaller is nice. I have found, IMHO that the newer bodies and lenses do not increase my keeper amount and they just do not feel the same. Less character, or something is just missing in my final results. I do not need eye detection, fast frame rate or billions of MP's. My older D700, D4s, D810 and the wonderful lenses were fine. When using the R5 in a fast way the computer seems to lock up and in the worst time. With my D4s plus the 24-70mm f/2.8 I could shoot, recompose and shoot again with no issues and normally with the big headlights on the D4s 9 out of 10 times I had images good enough for my and the work I produce such as calendars and books. If I had to do it over again I would have kept my equipment and just upgraded to a D850 and called it a day. I shot Canon professionally for the last 18yrs. I upgraded from the R5 to the R5II and then finally switched to Sony last month after many years of consideration. Even if you dismiss Canon's inferior AF and sensor technology, Canon is taking a highly questionable path into the future with their lens lineup. Besides following the trend of heavy reliance on in-camera correction (which I can live with), Canon in particular has failed to capitalize on the potential size reduction associated with mirrorless cameras. Their L lenses are massive, and their smaller options are true budget lenses that aren't very good. I won't go into deep details, but it seems to me they have a lens roadmap to absolutely milk the consumers for every dollar they can by strategically releasing different variations of lenses and forcing Canon users to buy certain lenses because no other Canon option exists, and of course, because no other non-Canon option exists (due to their licensing restrictions). A great example of this is actually the RF 35L. They waited 6yrs to release a 35L on the RF mount!?!? That's a staple lens, but they really wanted people to buy some variation of their 24-70 zoom, a 28-70 f/2, and/or the budget 35 f/2 or 35 1.8 STM before they finally gave us the 35L prime. To top it off, the 35L is not innovative, not an optical stand-out, and it's more video-centric. Lot's of other reasons I'm not happy with Canon, but these are the reasons most relevant to your video.

I had the opposite path in that I shot Sony for years but have now moved over to Canon. What changed?...the RF zooms. I fell in love with the RF zooms while building a collection of them while shooting on OG Komodo and later KX. So when, about 2 years ago now, I decided to go all in with Canon it was primarily a logistical decision as I would only need one set of lenses for both my stills and video systems. Add to that, I believe the RF zooms are better than the GM zooms. You can find examples of each that may challenge that assertion, but broadly speaking I find the RF zooms to be sharper, punchier and more contrasty, with an added bonus that so many more of them are optically stabilized. They say to "marry the lenses." That's what I have done.

RF is per my experience better in many ways except size and maybe the "look". I have more EF than RF lenses anyhow, they are good enough for most client work.

In general, I think the Sigma EF Art lenses are really nice. On the Canon side, the EF L 24 mkii and 35 mkii are lovely. I also like the EF 50mm 1.2L more than the RF variant (the EF isn't as sharp, but is smaller, quieter, and less hunty) and have heard great things about the EF L 85mm 1.4 (not the 1.2). The RF zooms, I LOVE. I have the 15-35 2.8, 24-105 f4, 28-70 f2, 70-200 f4, and 100-500 f whatever to f whatever else. All of them are brilliant.

I've got the EF 24 1.4 and 85 1.2 (both Mk II). They're both chocker-block full of CA wide open, and not overly sharp (but sharp enough). I wish the AF on the 24 was faster, so it was better for sports (shooting trail running at 1.4 with it offers a unique look), and that the 85 was just a bit... better haha It's a beauty of a lens, but really only fast in terms of aperture. I wish it was more in line with the 85 1.4

Im right there with you. Upgraded to the new IPhone this year, but only because my iPhone 12 was just about done. Cracked screen, wouldn’t hold much of a charge anymore etc. I’d buy an R1 or R52 if something happened to one of my other canon cameras because in that case, why not get the new model. Outside of that situation though, they are REALLY similar to the ones I already own.

You make excellent points, I didn't know the A1 wireless was that good. I have used the wireless tethered on the A7IV, and I was able to walk into different rooms and close doors and in closet and still get a picture from many feet away well over 40 feet. I want to see the AI chip for autofocus in photography with insects and the like. I want a precapture feature as well. I want wave forms and false colors. I would like to see it more like a Canon R5II in feature set while being two steps beliw the top. The Canon R5II is their hybrid beast. I don't think we will get a better screen resolution because they would have done that in the A9III. Are those Kef speakers to your right in the background and if so what models? Are you an Audiophile?
@loudandclearmedia
@loudandclearmedia Ай бұрын
Yes, the A1 is definitely more robust in every way to the A74 (except the crap, potato screen). It's kind of like the OG A9 was to the A7iii. For $2000 you could get about 85% of an A9, but it wasn't an A9. A1 to A74 is an even wider jump. The R5ii IMO is exactly what it should be. That is, Canon's best all arounder but not really best individually at anything. R3/R1 still have more robust communication, deeper buffers, bigger batteries, a more robust body and that dope touch sensitive joystick. R5C is still the better video camera in most measures and strangely looks to be a cleaner high res stills camera as well. It's really hard to call an overall winner with the Canon cameras, which is why I continue to rock my R3 and R5Cs. Nothing Canon has released this year on the stills side seems super compelling to move off of those now older bodies. Good eye on the speakers. Yes, those are the KEF Reference 1 Foundry Edition (non Meta). I wouldn't exactly call myself an audiophile as I see that term negatively as someone who listens to the gear instead of the music, but I'm sure plenty of others would call me that based on their definition. That pair of REF 1s is being driven by a Benchmark AHB2 amp and a RME ADI-2 DAC.

@@loudandclearmedia nah im not convincing you in anyway. im talking about in actual use, dynamic range and AF Is not noticeable. you can search, canon r6ii vs sony a7iv and you would see the AF and dynamic range is close. if youre doing static portraits which most people are doing, then the extra mp of the a7iv would be beneficial, as i said in my main post, but then the color science is subjective, and most people would prefer other brands like nikon or canon. my point again is, there's some specs that are not close, which is fps, megapixel, 4k120, stabilization, open gate etc. but AF and dynamic range is just negligible among these and a bad excuse to use in defense of a7iv.

@loudandclearmedia
@loudandclearmedia 2 ай бұрын
IMO the A7RV isn't a great all-around camera. I shot the A7RIV for a couple of years and had a love/hate relationship with it throughout. I bought the A7RV when it was first released but returned it a couple weeks later. The biggest problem with the A7RIV was that it had this massive resolution but surrounded it with an old camera, so it was quite slow to work with. Well, the A7RV fixed that and the camera is brilliant, especially that screen, but since that sensor was designed 2 generations ago now, there are better Sony sensors around. Both the A1 and the A7IV IMO are better cameras than the A7RV for many reasons. A lot of it comes down to the newer sensors just looking nicer in the highlight rolloff and the relative lack of noise in the shadows compared to the R bodies. Basically, if you're on sticks, nowhere near blowing your highlights and shooting at base ISO the A7RV will give you the best images from a current Sony camera. Strip away any of those conditions and you're better off with A1 or A74.

You switched from Sony to Canon over colors? Sony is a tad green but Canon has a magenta shift that is so ugly. If it was about color in the big three, everyone would go Nikon. Canon dumped tons of money into marketing to say they had great colors and pushed that talking point to YT for years... sadly it has worked.

I did not switch for colors, but the colors are a bonus. Like I said, the main thing I didn't like about Sony was the colors and the noise reduction in video, but I made the switch to Canon because I really enjoy the RF lenses. I had been building a collection of them while shooting on Komodo, so I decided to switch over my stills setup to Canon so I'd only have to load out one set of lenses to be used with both systems (Canon and RED). And yes, I enjoy Nikon color as well.

@loudandclearmedia i will give you that Canon has good glass. I am looking forward to Red using the Z mount. I have a weird set of cameras. Some Sony (RX0 and RX0 II) tons of F mount Nikon glass and bodies, Sigma FP, Panasonic S1H, blackmagic, and some EF glass and tons and tons of vintage glass. When Nikon makes red use the Z mount I will be heading that direction. I have converted two workshops I do work with to the Z8 and I guess that is why I haven't pulled the trigger on my own yet. I tell everyone that all the modern cameras can get stunning photos and video, it is all up to what you want to play with.
