You can't compare oden to kidd and Kidd took the attack head on not like oden,oden was prepared to attack roger but shanks came out of nowhere for Kidd and he took that attack directly destroying his own laser attack and then blast himself up he got damaged by shanks and blast and also took that attack closer than oden while having less durability than oden so ofcourse he got one shotted even law wouldn't survived that attack and luffy will barely survived it due to his good conqueror haki and observation haki so criticising Kidd is not good when law would suffer same fate too like him.

The only reason why Shanks wanted to take Kidd's ponyglyphs, or wipe him out, is because he got too close to getting all four. Shanks probably only keeps a "fleet", in order to inspire Luffy to build his own, which is why he doesn't care if they're weak. In a way he's another contrast to Luffy, Shanks has weak allies because they rely too much on him, Luffy has strong allies because he inspires them to fight alongside him. In a way Oda is fantastic at painting a picture of how Luffy could have turned out, if he chose to make different decisions. He shows this by making Luffy have "allies" with contrasting character to his own. From what it looks like, Shanks is really just paving the way for Luffy.
