Jealousy Rhumba: My personal favourite remix of Róisín Machine (I know, I’m weird) but when that bass comes in!! Jealousy Rhumba: Couldn’t have done this without the brilliant company, PRG, they provided the warehouse and the had all the equipment on site, they built the screen and lighting rig. When it was first assembled the stage was risen up (on a riser) and had huge black drapes blocking out the fully stocked warehouse, but I saw a beauty in the whole space so we took away the drapes and put everything directly on the the concrete floor. Jealousy Rhumba: Then I looked at ways to enter the stage that would show off the space, a way to show you round, to help the viewer get an idea of where we, the band and crew were. Jealousy Rhumba: So I chose to start in the loading bay and to walk you through the warehouse, past the aisles and aisles of dormant equipment. If it wasn’t for the pandemic I could never have used this normally busy hub, normally providing all kinds of equipment for music events of all shapes and sizes. Jealousy Rhumba: We sent a live-feed of me performing to the screen where Lindy Nsingo was warming up, getting ready to stand in for an entire audience. She’s incredible, such a natural dancer with amazing charisma. Jealousy Rhumba: The mood on the day and around the whole project was everyone feeling grateful for just being able to create something, grateful to work, and to be with each other marking something, getting a chance to just do what we do! Jealousy Rhumba: That old ladder was just there and I decided to incorporate it. See you don’t need to spend the big bucks on fancy props and sets! Seriously though, it’s always wise to just use what you have and be honest about it. Jealousy Rhumba: Oh I do love the luxury of a follow-spot. That’s the fella with a spot-light just following me and it’s not such an easy job as I’m only ever loosely choreographed!

Something More: Now here I am, I’ve arrived at the stage! And thank goodness Lindy is there and she’s warmed it up nicely. On the screen is a bit of classic video-feedback cause the camera that’s been pointing at me is now pointing at me and the screen. Something More: Some outfit though! I felt amazing wearing Robert Wun. His clothes dance for you! They have swing! Something More: Now the whole band are on stage and the show has really begun. Something More: I have a love/hate relationship with dry ice! Something More: First time playing this song live for me and the band. We segue into a kinda lonely little version of Let Me Know.

Murphy’s Law : Who’s the bloke talking? Yes the vocal in the speech is effected, good isn’t it? Bit disconcerting? Murphy’s Law : I can feel I’m beginning to relax here. Just starting to let go of thoughts of cameras and lights and edits and song arrangements and choreography and clothes. I remember at one point I had to just say to myself, “fuck it, you’ve done all you can, just enjoy it now” Murphy’s Law : And now panic for Simon as we attempt the first quick-change of the entire era, there were to be many, many more of course.

Incapable: My “quick-change area” is directly right behind the screen, so handy enough! Into another Robert Wun ensemble! Incapable: Lindy has changed too into a slinky catsuit and she’s just gorgeous! Incapable: it’s not like we could just stop and start again because it was a pre-record, it’s not that simple when you have 6 cameras on the go and a band mid-flow and anyway once you’ve spent the day setting up and pacing everything out there’s no time for doing things over! You just have to go for it and so I was VERY nervous, we all were, everyone of us were absolutely in the moment.

Narcissus: Hello everybody! Narcissus: I love the long shot at the beginning, the room and lights and screen look great! Benny Trickett and I spent many, many hours together, in his shed in his garden, editing the film and I can tell you it’s a head-fuck when you have that many cameras and that many options. It’s hard to resist the temptation to over edit. I learned a lot in that shed. Narcissus: Gets real heavy though.

Róisín Murphy, the most criminally underrated artist of the XXI century. Her creativity, her nature of not following trends and being both experimental and pop at the same time have made of her a unique performer. This version of Overpowered is darker, edgier and mesmerizing. Also worth noticing the gothic-inflected version of Narcissus, the bizarre indian-vibes of Jealousy and the emotionally charged performances of Murphy's Law, Forever More and Cannot Contain This. The whole thing is a masterpiece.

They are both gorgeous and fabulous but different. Besides, Roisin is not pure disco (she's also electronic, jazz/art pop etc) - neither is Kylie. Reducing all vast repertoire both of Roisin and Kylie to just disco (not that anything is bad with this genre) is doing them both a disservice. Roisin's music in particular is MUCH more encompassing that just one genre or one narrow category, she came from electronic and she's still there, she just added on disco and other elements. Even her disco songs are not pure disco but more experimental.
