Scene Nedda Tonio Silvio - 1st act
I uploaded this beautiful scene a first time several months ago (meanwhile removed from YT) but due to the then enforced 10 minute restriction by YT, I had to make a few cuts. Now that the maximum allowed time per upload has been extended to 15 minutes, I can post the complete scene, from just after Nedda's aria 'Stridono Lassú' to the end of the love duet between Nedda and Silvio. So this time the complete Nedda/Tonio quarrel with Nedda whipping Tonio's face is included, a very powerful passage.
This scene is taken from a vynil record with the complete I Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana recordings made in 1955 with Maria Callas, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Tito Gobbi and Rolando Panerai. Tulio Serafin conducts the orchestra of the Scala di Milano.

Fortunately, I saw today on KZbin (random selection!) on the Internet capable TV the complete recording of 'Pagliacci'. These were still ‚singers to my taste‘. Such voices are rarely available today. Alone the prologue of Tonio with the magnificent Tito Gobbi is overwhelming. Very impressive his breathing technique, his wonderful expressiveness! With what sophistication he also sings the Silvio. Unique! Fabulous! A great joy: the heroic Galliano Masini as Canio. Onelia Fineschi lends the Nedda her wonderful voice, while Gina Lollobrigida performs her impressive.

This is a magnificent performance, but something has gone wrong in the transfer - it is pitched a semitone too high. And, as someone else also pointed out, it was recorded in 1954, not 1955.

Sorry, folks. I was different then. This is incredibly alive with vocal coloring you don't hear from most singers today. And Serafin! Even the orchestra knows the story and interprets. I have been going to the opera for 60 years in NY and around the world and can't convince people today that the style is eroding; it's all sound and less and less technique that allows for vocal coloring. There are fine singers today, but they don't grab the audience they way the great post-war II singers did. KZbin if full of proof of a long-ago, vital, visceral singing missing today. Hvorostovsky, Agresta, Terfel, Barton, Pape, and Taras Stonda (great Ukranian bass) are some of today's wonderful, old-fashioned singers (Alas, Dmitry is no longer performing). I'm not saying there aren't any, but in the old days, even the B-level singers were interesting.

I am a tenor used to the recordings of great tenors like Caruso. All you hear now is that you have to sing through the mask. If you don't, if you dare to use the other resonances available to the voice, the teachers just don't want to know you. No wonder nobody has any idea how to sing, no wonder standards now are so poor
