Queen Mary is a floating hotel on Long Beach and has been for quite some time If you are referring to a hotel than you must be referring to Queen Elizabeth 2 which was built in the 60s/70s and was converted into a floating hotel in Dubai arount the time that Queen Mary 2 was launched in 2004.

Olympic. Not a name you'll recognise. But the name of 1 of the most damn impressive ships in history. She entered service in 1911 but suffered an accident involving the HMS Hawke, and was relegated to the docks alongside her sister ship, the infamous Titanic. On the faithful night of April 14-15 1912 she was steaming to Southampton from NYC when she received a distress call. The call being on her path she continued to steam on course, albeit faster. Hours passed and she contacted S.S. Carpathia to see if assistance was needed, and was hastily turned down due to her similarities with the Titanic. She suffered a strike when the laws changed when White Star gave her lifeboats that were severely inadequate. She later received lifeboats presumably from Titanic. During the First World War she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy after the sinking of the Lusitania and became a troopship. Her sister ship Britannic was finished as a hospital ship. Her career was uneventful and returned to servicing the Southampton-NYC route under Cunard-White star alongside Mauritania, and apart from an incident with a lightship she just worked. She met her fate at the hands of the cutters torch in 1935, and was completely gone by late 1937.

This was very close to happening in reality. Olympic was actually torpedoed by the U-boat she famously sank in 1918 but by sheer luck the warhead didn't detonate. This wasn't discovered until the impact dent was found on her hull when she was being returned to passenger service in 1919.

I am not aware if they ever did. Lusitania was 6 to 7 years older than Titanic, and was sailing 3 years after Titanic went down. Both are considered major disasters. Titanic took 1500 lives. Lusitania took 1200 lives.

SubbieTheBuilder, Here is how you can tell the Lusitania apart from the Mauretania. Notice the exhaust ventilators that run along both sides of the exterior decks. On the Mauretania these were inclosed candy-cane shaped ventilators. On the Lusitania they were more like stacks with raised lids held in place by spring shafts. Also, both ships had red funnels, but the Lusitania's (Kept in running service after the start of WWI) was painted black. I do not know the reason for this.

I think the legend of Titanic was born much later, after the Olympic was scrapped. When both the Titanic and the Britannic sank the Olympic stayed as WSL's flagship and their largest ship until 1922 when they aquired the 56,550 GRT SS Bismarck and renamed her RMS Majestic. Olympic couldn't have lived in shadow because she was the only one of her sisters that survived.
