My dad was in the military. I heard from a Navy Vet once, how he and his friends would watch the Marines early morning run to watch them drop like flies as they ran for over an hour. I don't know about the Army, but if he was a Marine he would probably be "trained" to death before being forced to do hundreds of menial tasks over and over again. They are not only responsible for their spouses actions, but your own actions is defiant torture. Retired USAF here. I can reasonably assume that SSgt Schmuckatelli has attended the mandatory annual USAF Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) sessions since he first entered the service, since they are, well, MANDATORY. The official policy toward sexual harrassment is one of zero tolerance, though there is still a high incidence of occurences. The SSgt could have faced charges under the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) for his actions. Punitive Article 92 (Failure to obey order or regulation), and Article 134 (General article, which covers multiple categories that are prejudicial towards good order and discipline) could have been applied, and he most probably recieved administrative discipline/Non-Judicial Punishment in the form of an Article 15 action which would go into his permanent record. This would not have been a court martial offense, even though it was a high profile event. What might have happened was that the SSgt's supervisor, First Sergeant, and Commander probably had no clue what had happened or what was going down, but it probably wasn't something good. However, they might have been made aware through back channels/good ol' boy network. Upon entering the office, the SSgt would have stepped to the front of the General's desk, saluted sharply, and then stood at attention. He probably recognized her at that point and had an internal "Oh, S@#T!" moment. The general probably asked him why he thought he had been called into her office, and somewhere in the conversation asked him if he had recieved his annual SAPR training. She might have pointed out to his immediate leadership that SSgt Schmuckatelli probably needed some refresher training on the subject. He would have not enjoyed the experience at all, and the fun would have continued once he returned to his unit. I used "probably" and "might have" a lot, since I wasn't there. However, I have been in similar circumstances as a supervisor and a First Sergeant. Sometimes it was hard to maintain a straight face while the miscreant was being read the riot act, but I can't say that I ever felt sorry for them. Actions have consequences.

@@mumbles005 Interesting opinion. Of course he just meant "Hang as friends." As for saluting indoors, you might have that confused with wearing a cover indoors; the only time you are authorized to wear a cover indoors is if you are under arms or as part of a ceremonial formation. He would have certainly saluted indoors and gave a reporting statement when he marched in and reported to her, or any other officer of any rank for that matter. EDIT: AFI 1-1 Air Force Standards is the reference, in case you were wondering.

So Staff Sergeant douchebag would have been fine. Sure there's sharp but 90% of the time this shit gets swept under the rug and forgotten about.
@lloydkeith30613 жыл бұрын
@@Hunglikeagrimsmo as a veteran, I can say with no reservations. All a woman has to do is make a serious accusation. For real though, if it's, the harassment, is a on going thing. All she would need is a small bit of evidence. One recording of one incident. Then she could point back at everything else that has happened. Not long ago in Ohio at Wright Paterson airforce base this happened. Whole chains of command got wiped out for the cover up. The base general was forced to retire in disgrace. If your sister is being harassed she can put a stop to it and destroy the harasser's in the process.
@shawnwolf59615 жыл бұрын
Ex Army here. What EXACTLY would have happened really depends on just how long ago this was, because in recent years, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and infidelity/adultery have become a large focus. In today's standards, at best he would get an article 15 under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. That would be slap on the wrist though, and today for sexual harassment and infidelity, that wouldn't fy--especially since we are talking about a SSG, not someone of really high rank. He is an NCO, but he isn't a super high ranking NCO, so he wouldn't be able to float above some of the rules as some higher ranks manage to do. What MOST likely occurred is his commander and his 1sg probably got a talking too. Then during that meeting, he was most likely informed that a sexual harassment investigation was going to happen. THEN, he was probably court-martialed. He would have been demoted (I've seen SSGs get demoted all the way back to PVT and then get dishonorably discharged at that point), and then, depending on how nice their leadership was feeling, that General could have let him finish his current term and written what is called a GOMOR (general officer memorandum of reprimand). A GOMOR ends careers. You cannot promote passed E4 (Specialist) and you cannot re-enlist for another term. This goes in your permanent record, and you get a discharge other than honorable if you are barred from re-enlistment this way (or leadership can request a lower discharge if memory serves me correctly). That is if the leadership is feeling nice. They COULD have simply demoted and then discharged this guy too. The above applies to infidelity as well, as the military has come down HARD on people cheating on their spouses, because of the nasty image it gives the military. So there you go. It's unlikely this guy continued to serve after that term, and even if he somehow avoided all of that (say the General cut him some slack and DIDN'T throw the book at him), he still would have at very least been demoted and barred for re-enlistment. These charges are very severe, and the military takes them as such. Now, I know there is army vs airforce potential, but the crackdown on these issues and how seriously they are taken, is military wide. I had a friend who was simply ACCUSED of sexual harassment, and it took the military are full YEAR to dismiss the claims. He was a freaking pariah that entire year too.

If I really wanted to burn someone and ruin his career, I feel like I can just because I'm a female. It makes me sick that women would falsely accuse someone of sexual harrassment or assault. It's not fair to those who were truly harassed and won't be believed because of those false accusations.

@@MortuusTemplum Am I correct in assuming you disagree with the "burn career" part? If that's the part you disagree with, I'd be glad to know that you're correct. I hate that some walk eggshells around me. On deployment, I was the only female member of a 5 man team. None of us knew each other before that deployment. When it came to getting in the car together, I always sat in the back seat just because it's my personal favorite seat in the car. At the beginning, they offered me the front passenger seat because they felt bad they were making the female sit in the back. I explained that I'm not offended with that kind of stuff and it's really just as sexist to give me the front seat just because I'm female. It helped break the ice so we could get along and they settled down.

@@iyaayas Correct, from what I have seen, usually if they are not repeat offenders then they are given another chance because there is that slim possibility the guy was just so ignorant that he didn't see his faults. @@MortuusTemplum it's mostly the NSFW jokes and conversations my unit usually talks about. Maintenance workers who have stereotypical sailors mouths. I've been with my unit for 12 years now. My shop has done a complete 180. During my college years and I didn't have time for fun, they'd go out all the time every drill weekend. They'd have those subjectively offensive conversations more frequently. Now all but 5 are gone (retired, different units, etc) and the noobs and leaders of my shop are cleaner than a baby's bottom after a bath. Huge culture shift. I personally like it but they've become boring. Nobody hangs out anymore. While they laugh, there's a sadness/boredom behind it. The old people talk about the good old days when we use to go out to do things together, the days I missed out on and looked forward to. Sure, there was a lot of offense but at least we didn't walk on eggshells together. Now, there's the concern that one report will ruin that person's career, even if the report is false.

Thank you for standing up for those of us who are 💯 legitimate sexual assault and abuse survivors, as I’m among way too many, unfortunately. I’m also among many fellow survivors who have had the same cringe response to things like the “me-too” movement. Instead of helping and supporting actual survivors, it brought out the worst in humanity’s females, who have no moral compass and would gladly take advantage of the whole “believe all women” ideology. This complete mockery creates hostility toward those who need all the help and support they can get in recovering from their trauma. And unfortunately, sexual assault and abuse are equal-opportunity offenders; regardless of how a person identifies, being victimized is a real possibility. And in my honest opinion, the current social climate only exasperates this. I’ve never been in the military, but my dad was an Army veteran, and both of my brothers are Air Force Veterans. So I have a lot of respect for those who step up to serve and defend our country and the freedoms that us civilians will never fully understand the price you’ve paid to make it happen, and I’m really glad that you have programs like SHARP in place for every service member’s benefit.

That last story reminded me of another I heard, where a new dad was getting chewed out by his boss for his work quality going downhill since having a dad. He's been tired, calling in, having to go home early, etc. to help his wife with the new baby. His boss did not seem to comprehend why he, as the _man_ of the family, had to be so involved with the baby, and even proudly bragged that he's "never changed a diaper in my life." New dad clapped back with, "I would never admit to being so useless of a husband."

I am a retired Paralegal Noncommissioned Officer. Over the course of my career, I worked in the Military Justice Office (Prosecutor), the Trial Defense Service Office (Defender), the Legal Assistance Office (help with administrative actions) and myriad other branches of the JAG office. The Chain of Command has several options when disposing of misconduct: LEAST severe - Do nothing. Verbal reprimand (Butt-chewing) Written reprimand (Counseling statement) Administrative Action (Letter of Reprimand or an evaluation that removes Sergeants from leadership positions) Summary Nonjudicial Punishment (Commander-imposed light punishment for minor offenses) Nonjudicial Punishment (Commander-imposed punishment that may include reduction in rank and forfeiture of pay) Summary Court-Martial (Trial by an appointed Officer) MOST severe - Court-Martial (Trial before a military judge which may have a panel, the military equivalent of a jury) For a Servicemember to have committed an offense under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, he has to have met the elements of the offense by committing certain acts and/or using certain language. Depending on the course the Chain of Command chooses and on the quality of the evidence gathered, any of the previously-described courses action may have been taken. And a combination may have been taken. There's a comment in the thread that says he was demoted and forfeited pay. Maybe. Courts-Martial and Article 15s are public record. It would be easy for someone to find out. Not me, though. I'm retired. This is a boiled-down version of the Military Justice process. There is a HELL of a lot to conducting a court-martial or even an Article 15 that space doesn't allow. If anyone wants to know more.... call your local JAG office. I"m retired.
@asawasa28064 жыл бұрын
I was thinking it's probably an article 15 unless this guy has a paper trail history in which case they'd just court martial him or some sort of admin separation with less than honorable discharge. probably whatever the Lt. General wanted.
@darthslackus4994 жыл бұрын
Normally, I'm in favor of a verbal or written reprimand. But, the thing is that sergeant is a predator who doesn't know when to quit. Now pictures this: sometimes in the future he gets a young and pretty recruit under his command. What do you think this girl (who is fresh off basic training or HS) chances of fending him off? If I was this 3-stars I would end this guy's career. It does 2 things: 1) Protect those under her command, 2) Sends a number of messages that many can draw to various conclusions

In the British Army doing this sort of thing can be a courts martial offence. Automatic courts martial offence that is. Specifically if it is found that you tried to use your rank to get favours with someone else's wife (of lower rank) don't expect your career to last more than a few days. One Company Sergeant I used to know (basically the Captains right hand man and earmarked as someone to become a Warrant Officer) found out that a newly promoted Sergeant was doing precisely this with new recruits (incredibly rare but it happens every 5 to 10 years). He had been a Drill Sergeant in the past before yet another promotion (he was I think two or three steps above normal Sergeant). He told me he bawled him out and used his very own special insult reserved for such occasions "by the time I'm finished with you, you'll be demoted so far you'll be saluting civilians". He marched him strait into the Captains office (this conduct is considered serious enough to warrant immediate action by the Captain and the only time you don't go strait into the office is if the Captain is with higher ranks - most Captains will drop anything that is not an operational imperative to sort things this serious out). The captain looked at the written evidence etc then went into another room and called for the privates and questioned them. The MP's took him and he was out of the Army in less than a week and lost his pension. I believe in some situations it can lead to criminal charges.

Ive ranted about this so much in the past; I had a job at a pizza place that boasted about fast pizza. Things happened, tensions happened, and everything was both of our faults(me and my boss). Sorry. I like to rant lol. I could go into detail about what makes me hate my old boss so much, but what broke the camel's back was her callingme poison to the store. Granted, i did have a bad attitude, but you try working 5/6 days a week with the boss in the morning, with no variation, and not have a bad attitude. I had put applications in to multiple places, and was willing to take third shift if it got me away from there, but the first place that contacted me was another pizza place that i had forgotten i had applied to.(Im MUCH happier, less panic attacks) They ask if i can start on a certain day, and despite being scheduled that day, i said yes. And you wanna know what i was scheduled the *next* day? A 10 hour, 9-7, opening shift, where I wouldve been the one on drive thru. Please note, that the coworker who wouldve worked that morning as well, sucked butt at drive thru, and the boss was old and 'couldnt walk back and forth like that'. Not to brag, but i was hecking good at my job. The only thing i couldnt do, was manager duties; though one of the managers did recommend making me one, but the boss took me back for a talk, and told me no. Asked me if i even wanted to, and while im not good with people and didnt really want the responsibility, i wouldve liked to have been told they considered it, instead of just blowing it off. Again, sorry for the rant, but the construction story made me think about that job, and im in a slight mood from remembering kittens that have died, so it made me upset lol.
