Also 100% the mother knew the instant her husband said that that this is what was going to happen and she just let it because that is the number 1 best way to teach privacy. Parents think privacy means teens are hiding something or doing drugs when in reality most teens just want a place where they feel safe from authority and feel like they have some sort of power in the house even if it isn't really any real power. (Knock before entering makes the kid feel like they control that space even though they and their parents all know that the parent could just barge in at any moment but doesn't when it is unnecessary) As someone who grew up in an abusive house with no privacy, i can say it fucks with a kids mind. When he goes on vacation, he does extra work for a few weeks before he heads out, working 8 hours a day for 5 or 6 days in the week. While he is basically always on the clock, monitoring social media, sending e-mails, on calls with companies, attending events, etc, he absolutely can take time off when he wants, and gets plenty of rest away from work.

The sexism stories reminded me of when I worked in a hardware store. We had a counter right in through the front door where customers could go to ask about products and make orders so they wouldn't have to go around the whole store to find everything. They could just make the order, go to the cash and pay, and then drive around back and the warehouse staff would pick everything and load it up for them. Most of the people working at the counter were part-time student employees that didn't know a whole lot about the products we carried, but they would always be supervised by one of the department heads to make sure they gave customers correct information. Of the departments in the store (Outdoors/seasonal, paint, plumbing, electrical, hardware, flooring, and windows/doors) 5/7 department heads were women, so this same situation played out quite often. Some male customer would come in and go to the counter. The part-timers would be busy with other customers so the department head supervising would approach the waiting customer and offer help. The male customer would get snarky about how he didn't want some woman who didn't know anything about construction to fuck up his order. Department head would shrug and agree that they're welcome to wait until one of the guys was available if that's what they wanted. 5-10 minutes later the male customer gets to talk to a man, start asking questions about our products, and the part-timers would turn to the woman department head for input on every single one of the questions that the male customer asked. Half the time the part-timer was actually capable of answering the questions themselves, but it was more fun for everyone (except the customer) to make the whole process as painful as possible for the sexist customer.

@greenpiersystem2 жыл бұрын
I had my door removed as a punishment before, as well as for monitoring purposes (when I lived at my dad's, I had cameras in my room to watch me and an Alexa to be called from downstairs, as I was supposed to stay in there at all times unless called, as well as the door being removed. This was all "for my best interest" since I had tried to unsubscribe from my daily life subscription about 6 months earlier, but based on how that was caused by them being abusive for 10 years of my life, that didn't feel to be the case.) Something to note, however, that I wish I knew about (there is so much shit I wish I knew back then, but at least I can tell others) is that in a good portion of states, the legal definition of a bedroom doesn't permit an unblocked doorway (if this sounds like gibberish, basically CPS, which is what NY where I live calls child and family protective services, has a legal definition of what qualifies as each basic necessity in a house, and since some of these are rooms, such as bathrooms and bedrooms, they have definitions of what needs to be in them for them to be considered that room.) While there are obvious things in the definition like how there needs to be a proper bed, in a good portion of states, having an unblocked doorway, AKA a doorway without an opaque door to provide privacy, disqualifies the room from being considered a bedroom legally, and if a person is sleeping in there, that can be considered abuse just like any other inappropriate shelter hazard. Is it a stretch? Yes. But if you are in a case like mine where you are spending hours in front of a camera and being watched 24/7 while being emotionally abused constantly, it's worth a shot.

That was until my niece got sick of it, and asked me if there's a way to make her stop? Could I talk to her since shes my sister? And I literally told her what that girls father did, if she wont respect your boundaries, make her not want to violate them. So she thinks about it for a minute, thanks me and heads home. Find out a few weeks later that she was doing something "mature" (no she didn't give details and I wasn't asking) when mom decided to just barge in. She apparently went F it and kept at it, said that was the last time her mother tried that with her or her younger brother. WHY DO PARENTS THINK IT'S OK TO SHORTCHANGE THEIR KIDS WHO WORK FOR THEM?! What kills me is that most of these parents are church-going Christians. And the last time I checked, there's NOTHING in the Bible that says this is OK. Matter of fact it says the opposite! Deuteronomy 24:14-15, “You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your countrymen or one of your aliens who is in your land in your towns. You shall give him his wages on his day before the sun sets, for he is poor and sets his heart on it; so that he will not cry against you to the LORD and it become sin in you”. Timothy 5:18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.” Jeremiah 22:13 “Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms by injustice, who makes his neighbor serve him for nothing and does not give him his wages..." Romans 4:4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. Malachi 3:5 “Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, *against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages,* the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts. 1 Timothy 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Proverbs 3:27-28 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it”-when you have it with you. Yeah...shortchanging you kids who work for you is a NO-NO.

This one time, the card reader was acting up (all of the ones in the store do; they're all horrible and need to be replaced), and a middle aged man was trying to run his card. I asked if he wanted me to walk around and help him, and he goes "NO. I got it, I'm not stupid." So, I let him struggle with it for a little bit. Then, a male coworker walks by, hears the obnoxious beeping the card reader does when it's being a pain in the ass, and offers to help the man. The man turns to my coworker, now suddenly all cheerful, and says, "Sure. I'm just not very good at technology, I'm too old for it." And he let my coworker help. Then, as I handed him his receipt, he got all grouchy again and said something about it taking too long. Like, if you would've let me help you, it would've gone way faster 🙄

The first story: my dad happened to do the same with me, he never liked closed doors so I had to get dressed with everything open (my room was on second floor so I always heared when he was coming and closed the door then) one day I was hearing music and getting dressed and he opened my door saying ""I don't like closed do----""" """"GET OUT OF MY ROOM!!!!""" I yelled at him with so much angry he never did that again xD

The 13 year old girl? Kudos for her dad to advise her, double Kudos to the girl for sorting out the problem. Perfectly done. Anyone that can't figure out that girls of that age need their privacy are thick as two short planks. Actually let's make that three short planks. Medals to her for her bravery.

Aren't car wrecks the worst? I've been in two, and luckily I was uninjured other than some scrapes on my right wrist. And luckily neither one was my fault. They were both very similar situations involving middle-aged women running red lights, though the first one I was stopped, then went when my light turned green. BAM! The second one: the light was green well before I got there, I crossed the intersection and BAM! My car was wrecked. Not fun. Remember people, don't run reds!

I ALWAYS knocked, and got permission to enter my step-daughters room (except when I was waking her up for school, still knocked, but would wait a minute to enter). To be honest, she and her mom lived only with each other for 10 yrs before I came on the scene. in that situation, combine that with sensory issues where clothing at times is uncomfortable, and body modesty was not a thing. Was not going to the that kind of stepdad, so very definitely respected her privacy.

The last story reminded me of something that happened many years ago. I was working for a large multinational. I had been there for 6 years at this point, and had always been told that people at my level were not eligible for overtime. I had just accepted this. This company has very few full time workers, and prefers to use contractors / casuals. Anyway, there was a change in my management, and the rostering was not being done right. The worst part was that for some reason, there was never anyone scheduled to start at 7am on the weekends. Which made the overnight person ticked off, as they needed to leave at 7am. When I was the overnight person I called my manager at 07:15 asking where my replacement was, and they informed me that the first starter was scheduled to start at 8am. I was not happy. I was complaining to one of the top managers about it when I saw him a few days later. He asked me if I had put in for overtime. I replied "Nope, I am a band 7, I am not eligble for OT", and he laughed, and said "that got changed years ago. It used to be anyone over band 5 was not eligible, and now its band 8 and higher". Sweet. I informed all the other shift supervisors of this rule, and we started claiming 1 hour of OT on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Our manager started rostering 7am starters after the next budget review. hahaha.

This reminds me of my work where we get paid a set amount for how long our routes are and how the more skilled, experienced ones who are willing to put in an effort can make the route with an hour and a half to spare thus get the same pay but be able to go home earlier. About a year and half ago they(The CEOs and other bosses) tried to reduce paid time for said routes "because it only took so long" according to the regulars fast times only to find out that this wasnt the case. Whenever someone else who knew their job but wasn't familiar with the route took it, then the time was about the same as the old time aka one and a half hour LONGER then the new time due to the lack of same familiarity. And as per company policy we all could call in once the route time was over to tell our supervisor that we now wanted overtime until finished with the route or we just come back to leave our work gear and head home.....overtime meant twice the hourly salary. Even the guys who where used to the route started to do it at a normal pace and thus took the old time and could ask for overtime. A couple of months later MAGICALLY the head honchos of the company set the route back to their old paid times. Malicious compliance archived ;). Always find it how the bosses "knows better" only to realize they know nothing about the core tasks on the lower levels.

When I worked customer tech support for an ISP my female colleagues got to hear "I want to talk to a man" a lot. Most of the people who needed to call us were old people who were less tech savvy, so the old fashioned attitude was common. Some of them would place the customer back in the queue if they asked for men rather than fight them on it, the problem was that if they did that the customer would be placed first in line. I pointed out to them that our policy was that the customer had to talk to the tech that answered, and if they refused to accept our help we were allowed to hang up on them. The last thing we should do if a customer is being a sexist prick is to placate him. I even cleared it with our boss and he agreed, it was well within our rights. So after that, whenever they started with the "I want to speak with a man" bullshit and refused to take no for an answer, the girls would just go "If you don't want my help, then you're welcome to call in again. Better luck next time." and then hang up. It was not uncommon for that queue to be an hour and a half to two hours long. And when they finally got back there was a big chance that they got to talk to the same woman, since the systems prioritized their recent caller if they were free.

I worked in hardware at an orange box store. Guys would refuse to talk to me and go found a male coworker. They would lead him back to me or Danielle and said: she's in charge of the hardware area, unless you want to wait to talk to Harry. He might be in next week. (Harry was much older and was usually only there when we were not scheduled. Usually just for a couple hours a week. He was a fill in. Danielle was the hardware manager)

That first one almost hit home for me, but it was my mom who didn't knock. Luckily she understands boundaries and started knocking after I asked. (I was scared she'd open the door while I was naked and my step-dad would be walking behind her at the same time. I know it's a stretch, but I tend to overthink stuff.) My little sister, on the other hand, was a little harder to convince, but she came around after catching me changing clothes one too many times.

I worked for a nationwide computer company. We traveled all over the United States doing installations. The management got the bright idea that they could save a lot of money by buying all of our materials in bulk, and having them shipped to the jobsite at one time. Normally if we needed a small item we would just go to a local hardware store, or Home Depot, and make a small purchase. The order came out. No more local purchases, the company credit cards were only to be used for gas purchases period. One of the crews was assigned a job in San Francisco and when the materials came in they were missing screws. Since we would not be compensated for any local purchases, The job foreman called the project manager and asked what he should do. He said go to the next job until he could get the screws shipped there. The next job was 300 miles away. The crew went.

My ex's family owns an auto-related business. It's been passed down father-to-son for a few generations, but my ex was not one of the most experienced workers. If a customer called in and the more experienced non-family employee answered, they often preferred talking to a "man" because HE would be better at helping the customer. So she handed the phone to my ex, who had no idea what the customer wanted. My ex then told the customer that he would get an employee better able to handle the situation, and handed the phone right back to his female coworker. I liked these exchanges when I was visiting the shop

Fun fact, the first computer programmer was Ada Lovelace- a woman. The main person on the Apollo missions who hand-wrote the code to get the US into space was Margaret Hamilton- another woman. The programmers for the ENIAC (the first programmable "computer") were all women. Katherine Johnson was one of the 3 black females that worked on the trajectory analysis for the US's first human flight. Her calculations made it possible to sync Project Apollo’s Orbital Module with the lunar orbiting Command and Service Module. This was during the Cold War, so the US landing on the moon was a big deal. The other two black women who worked with Johnson were Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson. I hate when men tell me that I should give up on comp sci because I'm female and programming is "a man's job". If anything many of the predominant figures in computer programming have been women.
