If they're on camera, that affords the trainer an opportunity to notice their body language, and address the situation accordingly. Plus, while you would HOPE adults can be responsible, many aren't. And a camera requirement ensures they don't just fuck off for an hour playing video games, instead of paying attention. I work in corporate training, and yeah...that kind of thing happens. A lot. Hell we had one person THINK they turned their camera off, only to start rubbing out a manual batch right there in full view of everyone. The OT story: A similar thing happened to me at my old job at the hospital. We were under the ”management” of a really terrible trio of terror. The director, manager and the directors “desk pet” were constantly telling us to “flex hours” to reduce overtime, (leaving early or taking longer lunches) but to do all the work we had with minimum staff. I had been out all night on one of my side jobs, got home around 8am (there was a traffic accident with a fatality that we were on scene for) and the directors desk pet texted me asking if I could come in for a morning shift and work until 3pm. I asked if they would be “flexing” my hours the rest of the week to remove the overtime, she said yes! I did the only logical thing, I sent a text back saying that I would have to decline the request. I got settled into bed and about 15 minutes she texted me again saying if I came I wouldn’t be asked to flex hours. I told her I’d be in as soon as I was ready, got a nap, showered and showed up at 11. It was only 4 hours extra but, she had to smile and be nice to me while I was there and she couldn’t make me take longer lunches or leave early. It was one of the most satisfying shifts I had worked.

I think it's so comical that showing boobs is on one hand sexy and acceptable when it's in porn, but when a woman is breastfeeding in public it's disgusting and inappropriate? C'mon people! Edit: Well geez, didn't think that my comment would get so many likes and comments, I guess thanks for that? Also to clarify my reason behind this comment was to point out how effed up our society nowadays sometimes is. Seriously, I can't count the times I have been told by people that ,,a woman's body is holy and should never be 'used' any other way than to reproduce" but some of those people openly talked about the last porn movie that they saw and enjoyed to their buddies.... The hipocrisy always dumbfounds me. Also I've literally seen people walk past a gigantic lingerie/ dessous ad, right towards a woman breastfeeding and tell her that it was inappropriate to do in public. Like Opie said, most of the people were cool when they were told they had the wrong number, but they were always a fair share of idiots that didn’t get it and kept demanding their pizza. To be fair, part of the problem is a lack of education about the difference between deaf and Deaf and a lot of HoH people identify as the latter, as well, and also most hearing people don't really think or understand how hearing aids _work,_ so hearing people don't always get that hearing aids or even cochlear implants aren't always an option, or even always wanted, when they are.
@BeckyNosferatu2 жыл бұрын
A lot of people who are hard at hearing claim to be "deaf" as well, when it's an incorrect use of the word. But it's also easier, as someone with multiple medical disorders to just say I "I have a nerve disorder," than say "I have Fibromaylgia, Patella Tendonitis, Plantar fasciitis etc." (Which, kudos to you for knowing any of those words, and I'm sorry if you know what they are because you have them,) Because the general public ISN'T going to know what most of those words are, and then I have to spend an extra 20 or so minutes explaining to them what it is. I use this as the same thing because FM hasn't actually been PROVEN it's a nerve disorder, it's just one of the leading theories behind it. So... rather than just say "I'm actually really hard at hearing, can you shout into my good ear, or do x and y for me to hear you," it's easier to understand "I'm deaf."

The first story reminded me of when I worked in my local supermarket, one week I did 33 hours in 3 days (13 hours on Monday and 10 on Tuesday and Wednesday). So when I was next in on the Friday I told the manager that I’d need to finish early that day and Saturday cos I was almost at my hours and we weren’t allowed overtime then. Eventually I got sent home half an hour early on Friday. Joke was on the manager though, I got sent home after 3 hours on Saturday and even got half an hour overtime when he checked the clocking records.
@Crow_Smith2 жыл бұрын
Man for that second story, I remember when I worked fast food, I constantly heard my management getting chewed out for how much over time we all had. ESPECIALLY me since I was one person they could constantly rely on and was on the schedule most often. [I'm talking while their lazier staff was getting 3 days off a week, I'd rarely get more than 1 day off and sometimes didn't even get that]. But we were understaffed as it was so the manager was like "What do you want me to do? I can't schedule people when they're NOT available, they won't show up and then I'll be even more understaffed. I have crew that are willing to show up, so I'm putting them on." He got written up but repeatedly we had managers who would stand up to the District Manager because people who would show up, deserved hours. And they deserved at least a skeleton crew, if not bigger. Not even more barebones. Legitimately, if they removed all the overtime [without doing bs "long lunches" stuff] staff once they hit their max allotted hours, it'd be a manager and maybe 2 people - which in a store that takes a minimum of 5 just to shut down, is no bueno. Though when we got a new GM who REALLY didn't care what the DM said, that was even better. He basically told the guy "You want overtime to drop, start getting crews from other shops to work here [no one wanted to, we were the busiest shop in the area] OR you can go ahead and clock in and help us out. OR you can talk to corporate about allowing me to hire people with a record." [Most people who applied were turned down for petty theft charges. You could be hired with a record so long as it didn't involve theft or robbery, sadly almost everyone who applied for a while had at least a petty theft charge on their record.] Now ... granted the majority of over time came from the night crew because people LOVED to skip out before we closed, knowing full well they wouldn't get fired because we NEEDED people so badly that they could get away with it. So often it was the manager and me closing the store, so we closed at 11:30 and I'd get to go home around 3 am ... I was scheduled to work for 5.5 hrs every shift ... I regularly went over 40 hrs a week even with a day or two off. Though the pay and the awesome regulars are all I miss from that job.

Retail: You know you're not required to stay on premises during your break, right? It's personal time, so treat it as such. You've got a two hour lunch? Go run errands or something. I work close enough, I'd go home. They cannot ask you to work if you're not there.

I gotta love some people in retail who become supervisors or managers. As soon as they get that promotion they A) Become extremely lazy, B) Become extremely authoritarian, and/or C) Seem to mentally regress to the age of a preschooler. "Associate! I know I can cover this department but it's too hard for me now that I'm a supervisor! You need to do it for me daddy! Waaah!" Also that manager in the hearing aid story is a walking lawsuit just waiting to happen.

How long have you had it?” I always say “well I was born with it so at least a year”. Technically the truth and a bit of confusion on their part

I worked in my previous retail job for ten years. It was SUPER common for managers to ask people to stay late then tell them to take a long lunch the next day. I once got told on a Friday that I needed to take a long lunch to wipe out the overtime I'd gotten throughout the week. That resulted in me taking a 3.5hr lunch. Then the manager yelled at me for not having enough time to finish all my tasks for that day. Never again.

Here's a fun fact about (most, not all) retail store charity funds: they've already donated. They calculated roughly how much money people would donate, donated that amount, and anything you donate to them is just going back to them. It's _technically_ you donating, since your donation was theoretically factored in, but any extra they get just goes to their pocket. If you're going to donate, then donate to the cause, not to the middleman.

I used to work a retail job that didn't allow any OT. Any time accidentally accrued during the week had to be cut on Fridays. It got so bad that I was only working 3-4 hour Fridays. Management said no. You need to cut your OT on Thursdays now... No more leaving early on Friday. I said ok. I started working short Thursdays, but when Friday rolled around... We had a bunch of no shows and I was forced to help customers (technically I was not supposed to help as per my job description). It was so bad some days... Customers would follow me to the bathroom and break room. Management pretty much gave up on me not getting any OT. And I was then allowed to keep my OT in a position that wasn't supposed to have any! It was all because I was out on the floor actually doing my job when others would just hangout in the break room and pretend to actually count items for an accurate inventory. I could never understand how anyone could get away with that... But those people didn't get any OT, so I guess management was just happy about that.

I'd keep getting calls, most were "Oops sorry" when I said they had the wrong number. Except one. She kept calling back over and over one day asking about her dress. Towards the afternoon she was getting really mad and would not accept that she was dialing the wrong number. So finally fed up, I asked her name, waited a few seconds and went "Oh that dress. Yeah we decided to sell it to someone else, it looked better on them. Have a nice day" and hung up. From caller ID could tell she called back a few more times, but I just picked up the phone and hung up immediately. I do sometimes regret not listening to her response though, it could have been entertaining

When I was 19 (many moons ago), I ended up with a landline that used to belong to a local Mexican restaurant a year before. I'd get these annoying calls from drunk people all the time wanting Mexican food, so I got sick of it pretty quickly. I changed my answering machine message to "You've reached Paco's Taco House. Our normal hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 8pm, Saturdays 11am to 9pm. If you got this answering machine during normal hours, it means we're really busy. Please leave your order and address, and we'll get your food to you as soon as possible. Oh, and *we* *don't* *take* *food* *stamps* so don't ask." I got a minimum of three messages waiting for me every night when I got home from work, all with orders for Mexican food and the addresses they needed to go to. I had to change my answering machine message within two weeks, as it got ridiculous. At least I had a few laughs after work, for a while.

"A long lunch will be great! You'll still be in the building if we need to interrupt your off-the-clock time, and still expect you to work for free!" "A long lunch, you say? Seems to me like it's time to try lunch at that fancy sit-down restaurant waaaaaaaay over there! BYE!" Back when I was still working, if I did not LEAVE CAMPUS, they would find me. Even if I went to another building... they would find me. "Oh, this will only take five minutes." Thirty minutes later, I'm done, and now I have a meeting, and can't finish my lunch. Four hours later, and the dried up dregs of my sandwich are sitting there, lurking at me. Sigh. One day, I took lunch at 3:30, came back at 4:30, and left at 5:00, because I made the mistake of staying in the building, and they caught me for "It will only take five minutes" before I left my desk. Of course, it was a whole long line of "It will only take five minutes" requests, until finally, at 3:30, I just picked up and went out to eat. Of course, I missed the lunch special, and had to pay dinner prices, but I didn't care. Yeah, if you have the right, according to your employment contract, to say, "No, I'm not working during my break," then don't do it. Also, they really need to PAY overtime, if they tell you they need you to work overtime.

Story 4: the exact same thing happened to me. I worked for a movie theater. We have starbucks, Ben & Jerry's, Sbarro's and Nathan's Hot dogs. This one kid Khalil kept cooking the crap out of the burgers then put them in the steamer and by time people order them they were hockey pucks. I would grill them they were basically raw when I threw them and steamer he's like you can't do that. I asked him what a steam do? You couldn't answer me. So I told him why are there in the steam box they're going to cook if you fully cook it it's going to cook dry if you cook it where the outside just colored it Cooks it so when someone orders it if it needs to be cooked we can throw on the grill just for a couple of seconds otherwise it'll be done when we pull it out.

Pizza one made my think of a story from my past. One of my old friends would make Pizza for a daycare (His wife ran it and on the last friday of each month they would have a pizza party. However with around 30 or 40 kids, ordering pizza was not exactly an option. So instead her husband (My friend) would actually prepare pizzas the night before, everything was done and all they had to do was pop them in the oven. (They also did this not just to cut costs but also because some parents were sticklers for what was in the pizza and store bought was not an option, plus my buddy liked making pizzas) Now here in Quebec we have a Holiday called Sainte-Jean Batiste (June 24th) and this time i fell on a Thursday. (Usually we use it as an excuse to get drunk. and most people start celebrating the night before suing the end of the day to nurse back a hangover before work the following day. It is Thursday night and he has his pizzas being prepped. He gets a call. Now this is normal as his number is literally a number away form the pizza place, and usually he just corrects them. This time however, a drunk guy calls him asking to place an order. My friend corrects him and hangs up, going back to prep the pizzas. A minute later his phone rings again, he once again corrects them. the third time the guy starts yelling at my friend over the phone. i am drinking a beer as we are talking. He sighs and I smile as he says. "Sure what can i get you?" The grin on his faces he is writing down the order. He says it will be about an hour, and then asks if it will be cash or credit. Usually he would leave it at that, but they said cash. He looks at me, looks at his dough and smiles. he tosses a few prepped pizzas in the oven, and grabs some pizza boxes. (He had blank white ones to store the pizzas overnight before they are cooked.) The pizzas are cooked and we head out to this drunk guy's house. (No uniform, but that is normal. Most drivers around here (Except for dominos) don't wear a uniform.) Je approaches the door. now I am in the car so i don't hear the conversation, but he a teh doro fro about ten minutes before finally returning, no Pizzas and about three hundred dollars in hand. (Mind you, this was for about 4 pizzas, that cost him very little to make.) His wife still runs the daycare, he owns a chain of pizza joints. (Not like a big chain, just local here in Quebec. i think five) Good pizza too, whenever i go in i usually get a free pizza. Hoi employees know me pretty well and also know that i am entitle to one free pizza. So i usually give them a good tip. About half what the pizza would have costed, which they like. So end of the day, he started a pizza chain because of one rude drunk guy. (And yes, 300 dollars is FAR more than he would have paid had he actually gotten the pizza place and not my friend)

A fly by night call center opened up in my area, it was one of those call centers that are doing illegal things, but keep moving before they get caught. They had a call in line for their employees that was close to my phone number. Inevitably I'd get calls from people calling in sick for that call center. At first, I politely told them they had the wrong number. However, after a few weeks, the problem only got worse. I was working nights at the time, so I'd get to sleep and they'd be calling in sick. Finally, I had enough. A person called in, I told them that they should take the next day off too, just to be safe. I never got a call from a sick employee again. That call center closed down about 3 months later.

Wrong Number: Once when I was babysitting (in the days before cell phones), I needed to get ahold of the parents, so I called the number they left. For some reason, it didn't occur to the teen answering the phone to check their parents' party for the people I kept insisting where at that number. Took me FIVE tries before I finally convinced them they had guests.
