Dabney. Dude. Have you ever had bedbugs? That is NOT shit you want anywhere in your home. If you wanna stick it to a landlord, there are different ways to do it, but intentionally infesting your home with bedbugs is shooting yourself in the foot. My husband and I had to get a hotel room out of town one time due to a death in the family. Hotel options were limited and we ended up staying in a Super 8 near the family. First night was fine. Second night, I woke up covered in bug bites. When we got home, we stripped straightaway and tossed our clothes in the wash with hot water. We ran the dryer on as high a heat as we could. We thought that was the end of it. Cut to a year later. I’m sitting in my recliner and I’m getting bites. I check our mattress - no sign of them. It wasn’t until a few days later that I’m sitting in my recliner and I see a small bedbug crawling on my blanket. I toss the blanket and toss my clothes in the hot wash and high-heat dry cycle. It just so happened that my apartment complex’s quarterly pest control came in the next day and I told them I saw a bedbug. They sent in their bedbug specialists to inspect our place. They found…one egg on the underside of my recliner. But that was enough. We had to go through a fuckton of prep before they would come in and treat the place. We had to unpack a lot of stuff out of boxes, move a lot of furniture away from the wall, move stuff to baskets with holes, remove all aerosol can products, and so on. We had to pack up our cats and go elsewhere for the day because the most effective treatment is to heat treat to 130 degrees for several hours. When we got back several hours after the treatment completed, our apartment temperature was still around 96 degrees. Our couches and beds were upended. It took a few hours of running the AC and fans full blast for the apartment to get back down to a sane temperature, and it took a few days to get everything back in place. I had to set out several bowls of ice water for the cats because they were panting because of the heat. The heat reminded me of my trip to the Bahamas years prior, only with our furniture tossed upside down everywhere. It wasn’t until after the treatment that I considered what actually happened. I think what happened was that we thought we took care of the bedbugs we picked up at that dodgy motel that we forgot one crucial thing: our suitcase. We had gone on vacation a year after that dodgy hotel incident and I was getting bites right after we got back. I think a couple of the bloodsucking bastards were on the suitcase I used back then. Some of them must have gotten in my clothes and then migrated to my favorite seat in our apartment (the recliner). That was a year after the exposure. It’s a miracle that the infestation wasn’t worse than just what was in the recliner, but it was enough. I never want to go through that again in my life.

The classic hitchhikers. One of the things that sucks is besides guests bringing them in. It's also housekeepers that are spreading them. Most the time when housekeepers are spreading these bed bugs to other rooms they're doing it unknowingly. Adding on but a slightly different bug. Fleas. It's actually one of the many reasons that some hotels will not allow you to bring pets in anymore. They're not as hard to get rid of as bed bugs but still, people can bring those suckers home.

A couple years ago, I left home for my first year of college. For a couple weeks before I left I woke up nearly every day with itchy bumps all over my arms and legs. I told my parents I thought there might be bedbugs, but they ignored me. (I'm the baby of the family with no life experience, they thought I was confusing it with mosquito bites or something.) To be safe, before I left for college I made sure everything bugs could hitch a ride on was freshly washed before being packed away. About a month into the semester, they let me know some news during our weekly call to keep in touch. Guess what? There were bedbugs. They had to empty our apartment and stay, 3 grown adults (my parents and my sister) and 3 cats that don't always get along, in a cramped hotel room (which was not cheap - we lived in the butt end of NYC then, but it was still NYC) for a whole month. Apparently it was not pleasant at all, and it would've been even less bearable if I'd been there too. Plus, they were advised to leave everything from the apartment in storage for an extended period to ensure any bugs on them died too. Due to complications since then, we still haven't gotten the bulk of our things back, and we're slowly but surely approaching 3 years since that incident.

I had a massive infestation in my room that ended with heat treatment and throwing out my entire bed, mattress, everything. They still fucking returned and it ended, finally, for good, when we set off a bedbug bomb and put my mattress in a sealed cover. Absolute nightmare.

My sisters house got bedbugs from a neighbor kid. It cost thousands of dollars and over a year before they got rid of all of them. For years afterward, she would use a magnifying glass to inspect the walls, furniture and outlets. It really traumatized her. I can’t imagine anyone intentionally inflicting that kind of stress on themselves.

This is called an Escrow account. You need a judge's approval, but essentially, you keep paying your rent but to the court instead of the landlord. The landlord doesn't get the rent until the repairs are verified to the court, and they may award some of it back to the tenant depending on how it plays out. So you can't just refuse to pay in most situations, but payments made to a court escrow account are treated as payments to the landlord for purposes of the contract.

Yeah, thats what I was about to make my own comment and say... No Dabney, you're crazy, I would never subject myself to a bed bug infestation just to spite a landlord. I currently rent an old house from family, really its not fit to be rented, but they rent it to me at cost because I have partial disability, I deal with carpet beetles, they don't eat you, but they're sometimes get confused for bed bugs because their larvae has some itchy hairs, thats bad enough.

As someone in the pest control industry I can confirm bedbugs are a huge issue especially In apartments and there is a always a chance of re infestation even after fumigation or a heat treatment ( heating your apartment to 130-150 degrees for 6-8 hours) especially if someone else in the building has them and hasn’t been treated

We dealt with bedbugs when I was in middle school (I’m 24 now) and my mom and I both still have lingering trauma from it. It took her YEARS to stop stripping and throwing clothes into the dryer on high heat the second she came through the front door. Those little shits took 3 or 4 treatments to get out of our apartment. It was horrible.

My parents went through a version of the mom strike when they had three young kids at home including an infant. My dad cracked in less than a week. LOL For Story 7: A friend had a landlord who refused to address bed bugs, claimed they didn't know anything about it. Friend talked to neighbors on his floor, discovered all of them were dealing with bed bugs and had been for MONTHS. Previous tenant moved due to the issue. My friend called the city inspectors and wound up being assigned a pit bull of a young inspector who combed that 10 story buildging top to bottom. It got DAMNED expensive. She made them fix the elevator, rip out flooring in multiple units to deal with the bed bugs, shut down illegal basement units, remove a bunch of building supplies improperly stored in the basement, replace the front doors, and on and on!

With 4 kids + 2 of her own she managed to do groceries, clean etc. Mean while I see some parents refuse to go grocery shopping, saying its too hard with the kid, refuse to clean cause they don't have time. I have a 7 month old, within 1 day I can clean the entire house cook lunch and dinner while the wife is at work.. while looking after the baby. @rSlash, my fiancée and I were friends first before we started dating. She had passively seen several guys in that time, one was a friend of mine who tends to be a little flaky. He had acted like he wanted to date her and invited her to a Red Sox game. She was excited, primarily because she’s a big Red Sox fan. The day of the game came and he hadn’t showed up. One hour before the game (it takes 2-2.5 hours to drive there), he texts her saying that he wasn’t going. Later on that day, he started posting pics of him at the Red Sox game…WITH ANOTHER WOMAN. She felt felt betrayed, but they never got serious and talked to a friend (me), so she got over it quick. He, then, tried to go out on another date with her. She said that she had plans with friends (my friend and me) and turned him down gently. Good thing, because a few months later, I ended up with the love of my life…primarily because she had made a joke about using Tinder. Best move of my life.

Unfortunately many jurisdictions are not as strict about tenants rights as bigger cities. Landlords can just run wild in these places. Larger cities tend to have more renters so the politicians and the laws in general are more fair to them. Smaller cities/towns usually have very few renters as a proportion of population. You also see some of the opposite too in cities where a landlord can’t kick out someone who hasn’t paid rent in months and is effectively squatting.

It was complex military specifications and it would take a month or two for new hires to be trained on one department (we had four) and the big boss would fire fully trained workers at the drop of a hat. I saw one woman show up a half hour late after spending the night in the ER with her sick son. She had paperwork, a note from the doctor, dude fired her on the spot. Great video. I don't like the part where you encourage ppl to bring in bedbugs as revenge against a landlord. That doesn't just hurt the landlord. It can be a terrible situation for anyone in the building or close to the building. And just bc it might force the landlord to do something that the tenant wants of them doesn't mean others won't suffer terribly for that. They can ruin mattresses, furniture, clothes, etc and you don't really know how that situation will turn out. My parents are landlords and you wouldn't believe some of the tenants they have to deal with and the entitlement. I work in property management and sometimes tenants can be the most entitled assholes. Not saying this person was in your video but you don't know who you gave that idea to. The bed bug story gave me a flashback to when I lived at a huge dorm (5 buildings with 8 floors, 23 rooms on each floor) while I went to university and until I dropped out. My legs started getting itchy spots, then my arms and then every part of my body not covered by clothes. One morning I suddenly got the urge to look under my pillow. A single bed bug, completely expanded to make room for the blood it had sucked from me. I squished it and started looking for a nest. Nothing. Nothing in my bed, bedframe or on the floor. Not even poop. I moved out my little bedside dresser and found a shedded exoskeleton, but nothing more than that at first. I put it between two pieces of tape and went to the director in the dorm's office. In my country, dorms offices have to pay for any kind of pest control. I told him that I had bed bugs in my room but he didn't believe me. I put the tape with the exoskeleton on his table and he just brushed it off saying that it could be any kind of bug. Then I rolled up my sleeves and pants to show him hundreds and hundreds of bites in the distinct patterns that bed bugs make and said "Do you believe me now, (insert director's first name - I was PISSED)? I can also show you the top of my boobs, they're covered in bites as well!". Loud enough for the two FEMALE employees in the administration office to hear. He got all scared and awkward, leaned away from me in his chair and quietly said "No-no, that won't be necessary. I'll call the pest control immediately. What's your name, phone number and room number?" I gave him my information and thanked him in an angry tone. Then I went back to my room and continued my search for the nest. It was on the backside of my little bedside dresser! Big bed bugs, babies, poop! I removed everything I wanted to keep, put duct tape around the whole thing, literally just put it on my shoulder and ran down the stairs (I lived on the 4th floor) to throw the dresser in our huge garbage container. I got my way, had my room fumigated twice and then it was over. Because I threatened the dorm director with my boobs. 😂 (And now my body is itching after writing this story. Believe me, phantom bed bug itches - even years after such a thing - is real!)

My husband I had a similar issue with bed bugs once. We were homeless, and a guy my mom and step-dad kind of knew from our local VFW had a bedroom and loft area he was renting out. He had told us that his previous tenant/housemate had complained of spider bites, but since that guy's girlfriend and the guy renting the place never had bites, he was probably just making it up. We moved in and within a month, we knew we screwed up. The guy never turned up the heat in the place, leaving it at 50° all through winter, in a drafty cabin-like house. The only shower was in the basement. There was a fridge and a sink, but no stove, and my husband would wake up COVERED in bites. It took us a while to finally find out that they were bed bugs. We told the guy, and within a week of us telling him, HE WAS SHOWING THE PLACE TO ANOTHER PERSON! He definitely knew what it was, and wasn't willing to fix it, so his solution was to rent the area my husband and I were paying for out from under us to some poor girl who was down on her luck like we were. We only found out because I had come out to use the "bathroom" (a toilet in a closet) and heard him talking to her about the loft area and the bedroom. He was making it out like we had decided to move out, and that we were making up the bed bug bites in the same way he did about the couple who rented that space before us. We left in a few days, sleeping in our truck for a couple of days before moving into a motel room, then finally renting the house we live in now and are renting to own. As far as I know, that guy hasn't found a house mate willing to stay longer than a few weeks.

Oh my god I have a great lease breaking story too. So I called up my landlord to ask what would it take to break our lease. We didn't really have any problems, we just wanted to move to a different state and we had taken over the lease of the previous tenant, so it wouldn't be a burden on him. He says actually I've been thinking about selling, I'll sell it and you can move out when it sells. Sounds great, I think. No penalty. Until the prospective buyers start coming. Landlord wants to put a lockbox on our door so they can come in whenever they want. Keep in mind I was working from home at the time so I was home all the time, and we had a cat we were afraid they'd let out, not knowing about her. Oftentimes realtors are unsure if a property is vacant or not. He also wanted to let people in without 24 hours notice and expected us to basically present a "model house" look i.e. keep everything unnaturally clean. It had to look like we weren't living there, according to his standards. This "perfect deal" was quickly becoming a stressful nightmare and we still had to deal with the move itself. So I scour our lease, looking for ANYTHING, any way out of this mess.. and I see this crazy line "either party may terminate the lease with a 30 day written notice". We had been on a monthly lease without realizing it. Without the landlord realizing it. Probably without all of his previous tenants realizing it, as it was his standard lease he "used for all his properties" according to him. I couldn't believe my eyes. There was another line with the lease end date, so we took it to a lawyer to ask what the deal was.. He kept rereading the lease, shook his head, chuckled, and told us he's never seen a dumber landlord. We were free after 30 days. We typed up the notice, sent it via certified mail, and waited.. he was so mad. His partner was even more mad at him. I found this out after calling his office repeatedly to try to get our deposit back, his receptionist found the whole thing hilarious and had to tell us. I'm so glad she did.. she was like "omg YOU'RE the one who has him so mad" 😂

The bed bug theory you proposed actually happened to my old boss. I worked at "ghetto plex" movie theater (it had 4 theaters). One of these theaters was a Cafe, it had couches, chairs, and a bar. My boss (who was also the owner) fired an employee who's parents were landlords (an appointment complex not the theater) who were fighting bed bugs in one of their units. Anyway fast forward to like a few weeks after he was fired, he comes in the watch a movie in the Cafe. Later that day people started to complain about being bit by something. We checked the Cafe at the end of the day and there is a huge infestation of bed bugs (we went from 0-100 in one day). We figured he planted them in the Cafe in hopes of getting it shut down but he underestimated how cheap the owner was. It never got professional treated, he just had a handman put out stuff to controll them. I told him someone could sue him if they get bed bugs at home and link it back to the theater. I was taken off the schedule shortly after that but I did hear that the bed bugs spread to the other theaters and he closed down. It is now a different theater with a new owner.

Regarding Bedbugs: no, you do NOT mess around with Bedbugs. We got an infestation in 1 apartment. We sprayed and cleaned and cleaned but there was no stopping them. We moved to another apartment, but they came with us. We bought new mattresses, covers for them and our pillows, we moved all our clothes and furniture out of the master bedroom, leaving only the bed. And, yes, sprayed, sprayed, and sprayed some more. After almost a year of these pests, we finally got the upper hand. No bites in 4 months. We moved our furniture back into the bedroom... ... But then 1 night, I was giving my wife a back massage, and I felt something crawling on my leg... it was a bedbug! I killed it right there and it had bit me because fresh blood smeared on my leg. We were warned that 30% of bed bugs hide in other places other than the bed, in this case, they hid in my wife's dresser. But then a month passed with no new bites. Then 2, 3, 4. 5. 6 months passed, and no new bites. That means the 1 I killed on my leg, was the last 1. A year and a half of feeling unclean and filthy. Sleepless nights and dread. But we beat them, and I had the honor of killing the last 1. I hate Bedbugs.

My favorite malicious compliance story about sexist husbands getting what's coming to them is about this husband who complained that his wife didn't make dinner by the time he got home. The wife was running all sorts of errands with the car (taking the kids to/from school, going to appointments, etc.) and couldn't be at home on time, and he said that it was a mistake to let women drive and how much better it was "back in my father's days, when the wife stayed at home and didn't drive." The wife took his words to heart and never drove the car again. Now the husband was forced to do everything the wife did with the car in addition to his own duties, and was always tired because of it. He apologized and begged for things to go back to how they were before, but the wife put her foot down and refused. Even after the husband died from old age, she didn't drive the car.

@@ldannu5627 Oh boy! I would think it is. You’d need to know the specific laws of your country, and how they interact with other nations around yours. America is fairly simple. We have a ton of laws, many don’t make sense, but international regulations are a bit of a niche since we don’t have to go out of the country if we don’t want to. My best advice is in three parts. 1). Upgrade your mattress! Get something really good so you sleep like a rock! I bought a Purple Mattress just a little smaller then the one I have at home. Also upgrade other creature comforts that you can, or that the company will allow if you are a company driver. A bigger tv for night time, of longer charging cables for your phone, or even larger wet wipes for messes all make life a little easier on the road! 2). If you own your own truck, do maintenance before you have to! Grease everything before the manufacture says it needs it! If it needs grease and has it, the parts last much longer! Use fuel injector cleaner and fuel additives when possible. 3). If you own your own truck, protect your investment! Get locking fuel caps so thieves don’t take your diesel. Always carry a spare key with you and lock your truck! Get a lock for the back doors that you use when loaded, so people can’t easily mess with your shipment. 4). You are the most valuable component in that truck. Remember that. Don’t take risks you don’t need to, and don’t let people walk all over you. If someone wants to take advantage of you, don’t let them. A lot of brokers in the US seem to behave as if they believe that drivers are dumb brutes. (Many of us may look that way…)The problem though is that just talking intelligently during a conversation may not be enough. If Europe is like America in that regard, never reveal you are the driver if you are calling for information or to book a load. You’ll get less money for your work and possibly even snide comments.

Intentionally giving yourself bedbugs, even spitefully, is something I'd never do. Bedbugs are horrific and take a toll on you mentally. It's hard to sleep because you know that they are around and will bite you, plus it takes a lot of work to get rid of them. You can't just spray, you have to do a ton of prep, including washing and drying literally every single soft/fabric item you physically can on the highest heat possible. That destroys some items that can't be dried like that, so you just have to toss them. If the infestation is bad enough, your furniture needs to be tossed. After your entire house has been treated, you have to watch closely to make sure they are actually gone. Even after they're gone, ever single bite or itch you have makes you paranoid as fuck that they're back because they're traumatizing. ESPECIALLY if you're allergic to them because they'll leave giant hives all over your body.

Does car insurance work different in Germany? By the way OP described it he used the wife's personal vehicle for business purposes which would be grounds for your insurance being dropped immediately here in the US especially if made a claim like she would have had to I believe you can use your car for business purposes (as in other than commuting) but you likely have to pay a higher rate
@HistoryGameV
@HistoryGameV 2 жыл бұрын
Guess the company had a full coverage insurance, they also pay for such damages but your rate might to up a bit. Vollkasko is the German term for that. Also it is very common in German to have company cars that are given to employees also for private use.
@RevolverOcelot2008
@RevolverOcelot2008 2 жыл бұрын
@@HistoryGameV that exception slipped my mind. Here in the US you can us a personal vehicle for business purposes you just need to inform your insurance company that it will be used for that. It was just the way it was stated that the company car was in the shop and he used the wife's car that made me think it was a strictly personal vehicle. To me that would make her original reaction of being very angry be justified and logical however her assault of OP absolutely wouldn't.

normaly insurance will cover damages dealt by other people, vollkasko is a bonus that will even cover it if you did it yourself to your own car.. but in germany you should never give just money or let it be didacted from the paycheck.. that's what insurance are there for and i would guess 99% of people have one

They didn’t know I had some issues with bedbugs and told them I ‘knew someone’ and could get some bedbugs. I gave them some bugs in an air tight, super taped up container, they did their thing and I feel no remorse(?) or guilt. 12/10 would do again. The evil human had them attempting unaliving. I don't se why else _she_ would get involved in her husband's affairs, because hers was an obvious sign of a controlling personality - could even be a full-blown Karen for all we know. I guess the strict house regulations are also the reason why housing is so expensive in NY - either because landlords want to have their finances covered in case someone would call out on their negligence, or they still want to make a massive profit while maintaining the bare minimum requirements.

Bed bug story: usually "abuse" isn't a thing one can report to the city, but: in this case it might be considered "witness manipulation" related to the case they were inspecting, that can get you a fine. otherwise assault is widely interpretable and slander doesn't care about your free speech, so technically OP coulda sued for compensation for emotional distress.

If the rent was zero, he should have paid zero. Anything x zero is zero. But kudos to the guy who “fixed” his landlord.

Does it bother anyone else that rslash changes details to the point where their meaning changes? The story said op began teaching themselves but rslash said they began teaching others. Like what is the point in straight up fabricating details?

We don't have a bed bug infestation we have a cockroach infestation. When we moved in our apartment it looked fine but evidently the newly evicted neighbors trashed their apartment before they left and let cockroaches fester in their apartment. Well when the complex cleaned out their apartment the cockroaches came into our apartment. Then covid hit and nobody was coming in to deal with the infestation..Three years later they are finally getting people to come in and take care of the problem. It's been a nightmare with the cockroaches and then them trying to raise rent multiple times in a year.( which is illegal in our state) It seems they are trying to get rid of as many tenants as they can and then remodel and up the rent cost for newer tenants. We plan to leave as soon as we have enough money.
