Hi, here are some references and elaborations :) 00:00 This song laments the low status of women in the feudal period, especially those born outside the imperial family. The lyrics appear to narrate the fall of a dynasty from the perspective of a palace maid who has bore witness to history and has been helpless to resist fate since childhood. (Listening to this made me think of the fall of the Qing Dynasty. Would recommend copying and pasting the song title into 哔哩哔哩 bilibili, there are some amazing edits and AMVs on there). 01:03 汉咏 Han yong refers to the artistic expression of expressing history through poetry, songs, calligraphy and other forms using Chinese characters as the medium. It is an important form of traditional Chinese culture. 01:10 Refers to the palace maid's growth within the palace. The small strings and big strings may refer to how events shape people, small changes throughout their lives shape who they become. May also be linked to how actions of people shape fate/ events. 01:18 Pear Garden refers to the place where court singing and dancing artists were trained during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty, which was located in the royal pear orchard. 01:24 Refers to invasion. 01:39 The nobles and decision-makers first place the blame on the women and entertainers for causing calamity (think Helen of Troy situation) in order to divert the anger of the masses. 01:59 - 02:14 Shows the benevolent heart of the palace maid who had no choice but to be pulled into the political struggles of a dying dynasty, despite her miserable situation, she still thought of the common people in a way that the rulers should have but didn't.
