R. R. McCrae: Suite No. 5 for Orchestra. 2. Interlude

The Moderato second movement (“Interlude”) begins with a prelude (dedicated c. 1967 to B.W.) modeled on the first from the Well-tempered Clavichord and on the mis-recollection of a one-measure guitar motif of unknown origin (Ebe DBe C#Aegf#e C♮Aef#) that set the 16/8 rhythm. The second theme, with an ostinato treble accompaniment, marks this as the slow movement. It is gradually transformed back into the opening prelude.
