Here's a fun story. My ex cheated on me and we broke up. Seven years later I saw him on linked in and reached out to him. We got together for coffee. He apologized for cheating. He gave me a ride home and we ended up kissing. Later, I called and asked what was going on. He admitted he had a girlfriend, not the one he cheated with when we dated. So yeah.

When I was younger, I had an amazing step dad who treated me like his own kid. He'd pick me up from my grandma's house, treat me to some sonic mozzerella sticks with Cherry slush (my fav), share his music with me (that's how I became a fan of Stix) and was just an all around good guy. When I was eight years old I noticed that my mom would go do more and more things with her friend.. Lets call him home wrecking asshole (HWA). Anyway one night HWA came over to help my mom change the locks on our doors. I sprang up from my seat and ran over them asking why they were changing the locks and if they gave my step dad a key to the door. They dismissed me and told me to go to my room before I got a whooping. After that I saw my step dad once. He came by my grandma's and gave me a stereo with a Stix CD and a pair of purple ear buds. We shared one last emotional good bye and we parted ways. It wasnt until I was older I learned that my mother cheated on my step dad. Now I was stuck with HWA as a step father. He made my life HELL. I had to move into the walk in pantry-like room. It was cramped as hell. Heck I didnt even have a room with a door on it until I was in 8th grade when we moved. Now here's where karma kicks in... HWA and my mom recently got divorce. Why did they divorce you ask? Well HWA cheated on my mother with some lady in Cali.

In Brazil we have Carnaval, and in my state, especially, we have a event called Pecuária. It's not unusual for couple to have a big fight and break up a few days before this events and then get back together after it's over. I know a couple that this would happen to then constantly, one time they break up during summer vacation, and I still have photos of the girl he dated for a whole trip, then they got back together again and got married. They keep telling "We've been together for eight years!!!!" and I keep thinking that is very easy to "last" if you keep breaking up, getting with other people and them getting together again. I'm really late to this one (missed some, catching up; still like the comments) & very few people are commenting on this. I like your idea. I was thinking sort of similar, but more of an 'I loved this dress & I couldn't pass up such a bargain, maybe we could go get our nails done (or hair, or book to have makeup done at a department store) *together* & decide how we'll have them for the wedding. Or: "why don't you help me pick shoes out?" If she wants a lowkey wedding & bought a dress for $100, she doesn't sound like the type who would want ridiculously expensive 'wear once wedding shoes' I'd guess... so that might've worked. Sort of similar- tell the truth, but have some other suggestions to throw in to save the day. I understand the 'making it all about her' to placate her - I have a sibling where that is *always* the easiest option - but it depends on how much you want to feed the monster within!! Something you do *together* & both benefit from always feels like something of a win if you're expecting a tantrum. Sibling is a bit different from parent though.

I can identify too & felt the same way about his comment. Honestly, b/c I got I'll as a very young adult & my parents care for me, it's something I just took off my radar. For years. That wasn't difficult, given circumstances. I'm recovering, although likely to always have certain issues & I have no idea what I even think/want/expect; or what other people might. It's not really something I spend a lot of time thinking about, but hearing stories & opinions that are kind & supportive, without being patronizing is... Well I guess it somewhat opens my mind to considering different things in life may become options at some time, even if I decided at one point that they wouldn't be. I know this is several months down the line, but still... 2nd story- 1. Get talking with your friend again- if your wife really loved you, she would never have asked for you never to talk or spend time with someone who is really close to you. You should not cut off all contact with someone who is a close confidante and essentially family because someone else says so. 2. Divorce your wife. I am so sorry to say this- you may love her but this relationship has just become too toxic for words- the clear cut of it is that she's emotionally manipulating and abusing you. 3. Like many people have said below, she is almost certainly cheating- hiding away and locking herself away from her family and being overtly secretive with her devices is unfortunately a massive red flag. Her building a wall between you and your friend is also classic transference of her own probable infidelity. You need to get out of this for your own sake. This relationship is not healthy in the slightest. It is probably already having a negative impact on your daughter as well. Hope this person is alright now because... Jesus...
