2:11 One year in the second week of December, my aunt ordered around $200 worth of pizza to be delivered that night around 4 PM because we were celebrating my younger cousin's birthday early that year (he was born on Christmas). At the time she placed the order, it was around 10 AM, and slightly windy and _maybe_ snowing faintly. The transition to blizzard was pretty darn quick, as it slowly built up, and then suddenly slammed down all at once at about 2 PM. My aunt tried to call the place and cancel our order, but couldn't get through, so she figured the power was out, and there was no need to worry. And then there was a knock on the door at around 5:30. By this point, our power was out, and we were huddled around the woodfire stove toasting marshmallows while my aunt pretended to be an evil witch, "brewing" hot chocolate in a "cauldron" over the flames. When the knock came, we figured it'd be one of our neighbors looking for a hand, but no. It was a young, maybe-20-something guy absolutely shivering in his jean shorts and double-stuffed hoodies, carrying eight huge pizzas. That crazy guy had been the most senior worker still there when the blizzard fell on us, and had decided that, as assistant shift manager, he'd handle all the deliveries, while everyone else handled the phones and making pizzas. My aunt gave him $300 and three thermoses of hot chocolate and told him to keep the change. The absolute madlad _deserved_ it, and was appreciative we'd given him something to help cheer up the other workers as well. Two weeks later, when all the snow had melted, we got a ring of the doorbell, and mister no-longer-assistant Shift Manager and his boss had shown up with a bunch of cheesy bread, desserts, and 4 extra large pizzas to thank US for giving them that cocoa. Oh, and we got the Thermoses back too, but damn. That story is the biggest karmic ping-pong that I've witnessed.

On the topic of "no one has ever had a bad pizza", I'd like to contest that. A couple weeks ago my club ordered a pepperoni pizza for our meeting, and what we got was the saddest excuse for a pizza ever. The crust was really thin and crunchy, baked to the point it was mostly black on the bottom, the sauce was nonexistent, appearing in a bite only occasionally to taunt us with what could have been, the cheese was stretched thin and was strangely hard even when it was warmed up, so when you took a bite all the cheese on the slice would come with in a big slab, and there was a *singular* piece of pepperoni on top, dry as dirt and having about as much spice as a dorito chip with the dust licked off. I couldn't finish a single slice of that pizza, and neither could anyone else that night

I sure hate that "lol, people in the past would die if they ate flavor" bit. Pre-Silk Road Europe mainly had spices that you'd associate with making a bomb-ass roasted chicken, yes. Blue fenugreek, caraway seeds, celery seeds, chives, cicely, horseradish, watercress, most prevalently. Salt, if you're lucky. Then you have some others you could add for flavor, or make tea, such as borage, juniper, mugwort, and wormwood. If a peasant could chomp on some horseradish and live, he'd survive a Flavor Blast Goldfish or a Sour Patch Kid. The main issue is the amount of salt, which we've grown acclimated to consuming in large quantities. Three tablespoons of salt will kill you, depending on your height and weight, if you eat it in one go. The myth of the Middle Ages having no spices, or using none, comes from the early 18th century, when the gentry promoted the idea that food needed no spice (this was a fad that gained credence among the poor, who thought eating less spices would help them appear more "proper"). The gentry created the idea that we caused the Crusades/Silk Road because we had NO spices, even though at the time England had trade deals with Italy for Mediterranean spices already. The Silk Road was to help us get EASIER access to trade routes in China. Even today, I bet you dollars to donuts, it's only the upperclass who still promote the "we need no spice" thing among white people. Everyone in my middle-class family is of Slavic or German descent, and we DECIMATE our food with pepper and/or hot sauce.

@BigGrabowski2 жыл бұрын
@@KlutzyNinjaKitty I actually follow a guy on TikTok who cooks historical recipes. Dang straight there's a lot of flavors. Lol And, I think people forget vegetables add flavor, too. Europe might not have had tomatoes, garlic, pepper, pepperS, etc, but they had plenty of flavorful vegetables and fruits, such as carrots, horseradish again, currants, blackberries, and apples. And of course, I'm mainly discussing Western Europe, as that's the area many associate with the Middle Ages.

I think we need to clarify something about medieval peasants: They. Had. Bacon. Keeping a pig that would be fed food waste during the summer and butchered in late autumn so that the meat, cured or smoked could be stored as a food reserve for the winter months was not uncommon and would be done by any family that could afford it. They had bacon, therefore they would survive the goldfish.

Likewise, pickling in vinegar would give them an edge on sour candy. What would really kill them is grape pop. Cornsyrup, coloring, fake flavors, carbonation. Alternatively, Pop rocks. I always find it weird when people talk about medieval food having no flavor, as if they forgot that there are pleasantly-flavored plants native to europe, they knew how to smoke foods and ferment milk and vegetables to store longer, and anyone settling and conquering new lands (like the romans for example) brought herbs and preparation methods used by their culture with them.

Perfectly fits my grandma Except last time she was sick, and I mean REALLY sick, she decided to not go to the doctors office, because germs and she’s a germaphobe (not sure how to spell it lol) Instead, what she did was drink tea daily, with burdock root from her garden in it. A month in, my mum managed to convince her to go see the doctor because it wasn’t getting better. She’s fine now, luckily. But she still doesn’t want to take pills, even though they are literally just recreated parts of plants that are medicinal, but without the side effects of eating a plant

I don't understand why people think medieval people had flavorless food. They grew herbs, fruits, vegetables, livestock, etc. They had bacon. They had salt. They had pickling spices. They cooked with lard and butter. I would guess that medieval bread would have at least twice the flavor of wonderbread.

There was literally a form of medieval trial/ exicution called "trial by cake" where the accused had to quickly eat an especially sweet and sticky cake. For nobles who invented the trial the task wasn't hard so they were easily declared innocent but for a poor, half-starved serf they would usually choke on the overly rich food or die due to the influx of sugar their body isn't used to handling.

@Gaehhn2 жыл бұрын
What is "white pasta sauce"? Béchamel? Béarnaise? Mayonnaise? Depending on the other toppings those could work, I guess. Ok, maybe Mayonnaise is a bit of a stretch. But I mean I've had sour cream or mascarpone instead of tomato sauce and those were great.
@twendos8332 жыл бұрын
@@Gaehhn I'm not sure, but it was definitely sauce made for pasta. When it was baked, it made the pizza, which was already pretty oily, queasingly creamy. It coated your mouth and was altogether unpleasant, so... definitely not mayo and most certainly not sour cream. I think it was American Alfredo Sauce (which is to say packed with butter and cream), though I don't know much about sauce itself.
