I'll be the Le' Redditor contrarian here. I am not a fan of the subreddit, nor do I agree with their specific picks for each rating, but I think they misunderstood the rating system on r/truerateme. It's not necessarily that they're being overly harsh for the sake of it but more that they're trying to enforce a tight normal distribution on attractiveness, which people don't normally use in real life. In such a distribution, very few people should be, say, 3s or 8s. Normally, people tend to "underrate" or "overrate" ugly and attractive people, respectively, in real life. For example, in their rating scale, everything above 7 constitutes less than 2.5% of people. For most people, normally a 7 rating translates to "okay" and maybe "slightly attractive", but in their system and distribution, a 7 is very attractive and should be somewhat rare. Now, I am not necessarily defending their system nor advocating for its utility, but technically it makes sense if they believe that attractiveness is normally distributed.

I just think that people like Hasan who are bewildered by it are not on the same page when it comes to the foundation of their rating system. My argument is that the subreddit moderation is consistent with their core statistical beliefs about beauty (which clearly rest on the notion that attractiveness is objective). If you enforce that less than 1% of people can be rated an 8 or higher, then in order to achieve statistical validity in your own system, you can't let people dish out 8s to every person they think is cute. And to be fair to Hasan and others, I don't think the subreddit does a good job at explaining this, which I suppose is to their benefit since shock value drives engagement. Now, as far as what I personally believe, I somewhat agree with you. But I think there are some objective components to attractiveness. An easy one is a strong jaw structure for males. But a lot of things like "facial harmony" are very subjective. To me, rating systems like r/truerateme are interesting from a data perspective since they tease out those objective components that people converge on. You see patterns among faces rated 8-9 compared to those rated 5-6. And likewise, there are faces they rate, say 8, that I think are 7, and vice versa, which reveal many facial characteristics that are more subjective in nature.
