NYNJ Rail interchanged with the South Brooklyn Railway on a frigid Monday morning. They picked-up the first four R32 type subway cars to be removed from NYC Transit (Authority) property for scrap. They took those down First Avenue, through the Brooklyn Army Terminal, and into Sixty-Fifth Street Yard. The following week, those R32s were separated from their trucks, placed atop flat-cars, and floated across Upper New York Bay to New Jersey. This was the first move of what should be the way the rest of the R32s are removed from the property.
0:00 The NYNJ Rail LLC arriving at the Brooklyn Marine Terminal shoving a "protection" car.
1:06 Dropping-off the protection-car and returning light to the switch.
2:14 Light NYNJ power taking the switch to the South Brooklyn Railroad's interchange-track.
3:35 NYNJ coupling with the 4 R32 subway cars to be scrapped.
4:21 NYNJ PULLING THOSE R32s ONTO FIRST AVENUE.
6:05 Shoving the R32s back into B'klyn Marine Term. in order to couple with protection-car.
7:27 Entire consist heading down 1st Ave. as filmed at 41st Street.
8:33 Emerging from Bush Terminal Yard.
9:21BICYCLE CHASE.
10:07 Moving south on 1st Av. past 58th Street.
11:00 Emerging from the Brooklyn Army Terminal and entering 65th Street Yard.

Thank you, saw a fair few takes on this move at the time but you have new angles I hadn't seen before - loved the intricate ballet of the support vehicles - also you went further, most clips stopped on the way into BAT - subbed for your takes on urban switching - thanks again \m/

You're welcome and thank you for your complements! I've been fanning that line for a few years so I knew how to get into BAT. Plus, having a bicycle didn't hurt to help me get in front of the train \m/

Nice video! Once in a lifetime. I was hoping to see a shot of the end car with compromise coupler and the gondola.

Thank you! Yes, I see that a view of the coupler between the gondola and end-car almost happened a few times. Sorry about that: I was focused on the consist as a whole. This move still happens every six weeks or so albeit without the gondola now. I would guess that they would still need a special coupling device between the diesel and the first car. I'm planning to catch the next move and I'm going to try and film that part.

Great catch but sad for me. I grew up on the R32's. I miss the Red Birds as well. One thing that I miss the most was getting on the front car and looking out the front window. Sad that the newer trains no longer have that option. I would purposely get on the Local C or B train during the eighties and nineties just to look out the front window even though it made all the local stops after 125st.

Thank you! Yes, it's sad for me, too. The oldest cars that I ever got to ride while still in regular revenue service were the R10s. Weird how the oldest cars on the B Division always end-up on the C-Line! Now, it's the R46es. I really take it in whenever I end-up on an R46, C-Train. These are also some of the first cars I ever rode as a kid on the NYC Subway:-) I miss the front windows also! I made sure that my children were able to experience a ride looking out the front. Who knew that it would be gone now? Well, at least they and we can say that we were able to ride like that before!

A very interesting city railway. This is impossible in my city. All our railways (trains or subways (metropoliten)) run separately from street roads.

There are not many places in NYC where you can see street-running so this area is pretty unique.

It's so weird to see train cars "driving" down the middle of the street with cars all around them.

why do they got all the SUVs with flashy lights zipping around like the secret service? why is everything in NYC so paranoid?
@BryanMWade
@BryanMWade 2 жыл бұрын
I believe that those SUVs belonged to the car equipment division. It seemed to me that they were there to protect the R32s from the street traffic. I'm guessing that the R32s were still considered NYC Transit property at that point.

@@BryanMWade I figured that out without even asking. Pulling them out on the road, not sure which way they are going to go is an insurance job drivers dream!

How do they change ties rip up the street ?
@BryanMWade
@BryanMWade 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. Maybe they don't use wooden ties to maintain the correct guage of the track...

From what I've seen, NYNJ Rail streetruns approximately once every 2 weeks from 65th Street Yard up to Sims Recycling and back. Those runs are usually open gondolas filled with scrap metal. There may be short runs only as far as Bush Terminal Yard but I haven't ever witnessed one. The moves with NYCT subway equipment happen on an as-needed basis. The last time I checked, it was about every 6 to 8 weeks.

Too bad they didn't give those cars back to the people and repurpose them to house the homeless. That's New York for you.
