R35S/R36S install custom firmware ArkOS / AmberELEC / UnofficialOS

The R36S shares the same hardware as the R35S; even the files on the device are still named R35S, with the only change being the boot logo. Therefore, this tutorial should work perfectly for the R36S as well.

Not all chipsets are supported. To use your phone in tethering and to get more drivers, make sure you are using the prerelease of AmberELEC and not the official one which dtb release as in the video from here.

i simply drag and dropped mine on a new SD card that i formated to fat 32 using gui formatter. Default stock ark os uses fat 32, the custom ones use exfat or ext depending wich one you choose.

I didn't experiment too much with the PSP, but from my tests PSP works good on the original OS but you must switch the SD cards with ones with better speed and also the ROMs needs to be on a SD cards with filesystem exFAT or ext4

R35 plus is a low end device. Does not support any CFW. You are stuck with that OS. Is different then R35S, is a copy made by another company

hey. if you format you SD card with exFAT and insert it on any new OS, is should create the folder structure at startup and the you can copy your roms. If you install new ArkOS you need to change the config from Options -> Advanced -> switch to SD2 for roms to make it visible, is at 05:48 in the video.

Hi. Case is 3D printed, you will find the design on thingiverse. I don’t recommend the reader because already broke down; it was replaced under warranty, but it worked for couple of months. Now I am using one from Uni which has also usb-c at one end.

@@hackaround well you might be happy to know that ugreen in fact makes a usba plus USBC version. Both of them transfer at USB 3.0 speeds of 90 megabytes a second. So far I have not found any that surpassed that. It could be a limitation on most micro SD cards. Although the sun is extreme boasts 170 megabytes read speeds. All the other MicroSD don't have a read or write speed listed of higher than 100 megabytes per second. So I'm not sure if it's even worth looking for something better than what I have. I guess I was just curious. By the way killer intro music Edit: the ugreen cost me $6 on ali. The base us cost me $5 on ali. And the JJC model cost me $12 on ali. JJC does USB a / lightning 2.0 and USB c 3.0

I followed the instructions to upgrade to new version of Arkos in the video. I mainly want PSP to work better. Currently if I run PSP games off the main sd card instead of sd card 2 I get better performance. However I believe this could be playable if Vulkan rendering was available. I saw your god of war video and cannot replicate that performance. You made a comment about enabling Vulkan, but I don't see those same settings even when using the retroarch core. Am I missing something?

Vulkan does not work with PPSSPP, at least not under Linux. My comment about Vulkan was in the context of PS1 emulation with DuckStation. In my video, I am experimenting with overclocking, which, for the moment, is something I don't recommend, as I am pushing the device to its limits and it might break your device. Currently, I am exploring emuELEC, for which I have created some custom DTB files to make it boot. However, I'm still far from a final version.

If you use your DTB file from your R36S it should work because is the same CPU. Try it and tell me if is working or not, maybe I can help. Use a new SD to try the new OS and keep your original card intact.

If you replaced the DTB file with the correct one then everything should be fine. Try to replace it again, if is the same copy your original DTB file from your microSD, rename the file and use that one, maybe you have a different revision of R35S

Hey there! AmberELEC is the only OS that does not support FAT32. So, if you use exFAT or ext4 to store your ROMs, they will work perfectly. The sound is the biggest issue on AmberELEC, while it works fine on other OSs. I have a workaround in the works, so keep an eye on the channel because it will be coming soon. :)

During the game press L3 + R2 and it will higher the volume. I found a workaround to restore audio, but is not final yet, so keep on eye on the channel and I will update as soon as I have the final version.

from my tests there is no OS good for all, for example on AmberELEC, Dreamcast works good with Emulator: Retrorun- Flycast2021. On ArkOS, N64 works fine with Emulator: Standalone- Glide64mk2.

yes, there is no downgrade, stock ArkOS is from 2022 and you can upgrade to ArkOS 2023

@@mihai96z3d the only issue I encountered it was with the AmberELEC where the audio is a problem, at 100% is still low and the audio jack dose not work. Except for this, every OS has new versions of the emulators and it boots faster and is more stable. the original ArkOS, for me it got stuck a boot multiple times and at a point it stopped booting with black screen and when I've checked all DTB files were deleted. also stock SD card are very unreliable and very slow, so even cloning the SD card to a new ones will be an improvement.

I personally prefer AmberELEC, but now it depends on which emulators you use the most. You don't need to map any buttons; they work out of the box. Which configuration files are you referring to?

Great video! I've followed the AmberELEC tutorial and everything seemed to work perfectly fine. However, I put the new SD card into my R36S, booted the console back up, it's loaded up fine but there are no actual games on the console anymore. The only options I have are 'Favourites' 'tools' 'easyRPG' and 'ScummVM'. Is there any way to fix this?

Your original card is fat32. Amberelec supports only exFAT and ext4. So you need to reformat your roms card as exFAT, and copy the games on it and they will be recognized after that

Copy roms on your computer. Then format from disk utility and then copy back the roms on sd card. If is the original sd card it will take some time.

UPDATE: when downloading arkos trouogh torrent its not the MP version, ive downloaded again trough mega and it was the correct version and managed to flash the 256gb card and its being read by the system, I will try to just use one card for the system and roms as well I guess and see how it Goes. the stock ArkOS from 2022 is fine, but is laking a lot of new features. I just rechecked the links and are working without any issue, because is a redirect from youtube probably something is blocking you to access them. I suggest to try a different browser or from an incognito tab.

On arkOS you can connect a keyboard, exit emulation station(from menu where you shutdown), press Alt + F2 and you get access to terminal and you can set the time.

Hi, thak you for the great video! I have a problem. Installed new Arkos on new 32sd card - working fine. The R35S doesnt detect any other sdcard on the 2nd slot besides the original 64gb. Tried several cards, formating to exfat or a 32gb to fat32 and no card detected. Also how can the original 64gb card be fat32? Thought size is not supported by fat32

I don't think the issue is with the filesystem; I think it's with the partition schema, more specifically, you formatted the SD card with GPT and not with MBR. Which OS did you use for formatting the SD card?

@@MrDonGrinch open Disk Management and right click on SD card, not on the partition, on the Disk 1/2/3 etc depends which disk is your SD card and check properties, you will see Partition style. If is GPT then you can delete the partition from there and Convert to MBR Disk.

don't start any game, just press start button -> Emulator settings -> Sony - Playstation portable and here try to switch between different emulator until PSP games are running.

Also on the topic of scrapping, is the rom folder structure the same as the one its cloned off to add images? since im still waiting on a wifi dongle that works otg with this i wana use ES-DE to scrape my games and was wondering if i can just drag and drop the folders i get from scrapping on the pc to the consoles sd card.

if you used the same folder structure for screenshots then it will work fine. I've tried to use scrapping over wifi connected to a 5GHz and it was very slow. the OTG port is only USB 2.0 because this is the limit of CPU.

I think the r35s adds " image" to the names cause there's folders on the SD card with mix images sets that have romname image.png rather than romname.png also from folder to folder the image folder names on the r35s are inconsistent. Like cps1 has videos inside snap folder but over on gba or snes it's called video_images?

on AmberELEC I have on gba folder two other folders: downloaded_images and videos and each of them they need to contain the exact name of the game, e.g.: game: Advance Wars (USA).zip, downloaded_images: Advance Wars (USA).png and videos: Advance Wars (USA)-video.mp4. I've tried to add -image and it didn't work, or to move the video to downloaded_videos or to remove -video from name and again it didn't worked.

hi,why when i copy and paste the dtb file it doesn't come up overwrite ?? its flashed the firmware onto a different sd card and worked fine but the dtb file just copys into the sd card with no option with overwrite ??

check github link. for arkOS/AmberELEC use rk3326-rg351mp-linux.dtb and for unofficialOS use rk3326-rgb20s-linux.dtb. if you are using your dtb file from the device, rename it based on which OS you use.

something got corrupted at OS level. when something is wrong with DTB or kernel it behaves like this. try to redo the steps to create the SD card.

if the flash is successfully also with verification then the issue is not with the SD cards. boot from a Ubuntu 23.04 live usb and try the flash from there.

@hackaround yes successful with verification. Tried the file from the site and replace the one on the flashed sd. Also tried replacing it with the one that comes in the stock os sd card. Just turns on black screen and turns off 5 to 10 secs after. Plop the stock sd card back in and it boots fine into old arkos. I got mine from aliexpress cause it seems this datafrog r35s has a few clone manufacturers.

​@@damedusput your original card into the computer, open 'boot.ini,' and check the line with 'load mmc 1:1 ${dtb_loadaddr.' This line specifies which dtb file is loaded at startup. Instead of using the dtb file from my GitHub, use the one from your device.

if you didn't used a different SD card as I suggested at the beginning of the video, you cannot go back. Unfortunately I don't have the official image anymore as the original SD got corrupted. Maybe someone around here can help with a backup or try also other OS because they work very good.

So i replace the sd card and i install the ArkOs but it seams not stable. Sometime is freeze and a lot games don't works.. So i wold like to get the original SD. PSP dose not work so good with this device because the CPU is not powerful enough, some games will play ok, other not so much. PS1 worked good for me on new arkOS and UnofficialOS. try to play with the config of emulator for each of them on new ArkOS and you might get it work better then the original arkOS. for rotate check boot.ini make sure you have fbcon=rotate:0

Did you replaced the DTB file? Check at the end of the video if your display looks like that.

Yes I replaced it and the screen doesn’t look white it looks normal but as if there was a bad connection and the picture shifts down well still being in the same place. Yes, it will add the emulators, but if you check the ArkOS wiki, you will see that some emulators, such as Gamecube, are available only for other devices. The RK3326 is suitable for everything up to PS1, but for N64, Dreamcast, and PSP, it's hit and miss. Some games will work, but not all of them.

I didn't check all of them. When I tested the Wi-Fi, I used ports to download Quake directly from the device.
