The appearance of the Slants changed a lot over the course of their 41 years in service. Pretty interesting.
Thanks to nycsubway.org for their extensive photo gallery and to all the amazing photographers who took these photos.
This was my first try with a Premiere. What did you think?

I noticed this just now, but the pre-overhaul R40 slant has a local and express marker (kind of hard to see, you can see it more clearly at 1:04) above the door on the front of the train. Kind of reminds me of the new R211, it has that too, but for destination signage.

Great observation! They were the last trains to have exp/lcl markers, as they were not present on the R40Ms.

Cool. The 40s even ran in service on the Rockaway Shuttle's HH letter code, but since those cars never had HH signs, they were marked as "S Special". The R40s even did a short stent on the Eastern Division, mainly in L and M service. The J and Z mostly ran 42s with some of the modified R40A cars ,that looked like the R42s. The 40s were sweet as sweet could be, from a rail fans point of view. The Front Window was designed low,but narrow. Anyone could stand to look out the front no matter how tall or short you were. When running, these cars were FAST. I MEAN JACK RABBIT FAST...had a quicker response than anything running except for the 32s.. Queens Blvd and Central Park West express runs let you know exactly how fast they could APPEAR TO GO. THEY were fantastic,up until the day they were retired. These Were The F train cars.. until they became the A TRAIN CARS. The Best ever outside of the R10.

the year on the picture of the Post-GOH R40s at 1:47 is wrong. its not from 1986, the picture was taken in October 1987, besides the R-40s were rebuilt in 1987-1989.

I've got 2 things to say here. 1. At 2:10, that's a big surprise for me because i never thought the r40 slants would ever run on the J and Z lines. Very foamy and very rare shit i see there. 2. Why doesn't the r40 slants ever run on the D, E, F, G, J, K, R, S, V and Z lines? I've never see the r40 slants ever run on those lines and i still don't know why. If anyone can answer me why, then i will finally know and understand.

Well the R40s debuted on the F & E then when they were moved to Coney Island Yard in 1978 where they spent most of there 41 years in service so because most R40s were in Coney Island & Concourse yards they mostly served the B,D,N,Q & W

@@youvegoattolovecommunism2758 Really? Now i see why. But now i have another question. Why did the nyc mta company decided to put the r40s slants only in coney island yard and concourse yard and not any other yards? Was there any reason why they don't want to put the r40s slants in any of those yards, like jamaica yard or east new york yard?

Idk maybe cause there were newer car types that pushed the R40s away from the E & F one thing I know is that when the R46 came in 1975 the R46s slowly replaced the R40s on the F so they had to serve different lines but the R40 at least stayed on the E until 1978 when the R46s also replaced the R40s on the E I'm pretty sure & since the E & the F were assigned to Jamaica the R40s from Jamaica were slowly replaced by the R46s and had to be displaced to Coney Island & Concourse Yard & for a while some cars were actually in East NY yard serving the L train until the R143s in 2001 replaced the R40s on the L they even had a short period where they served the Brown M in the early to mid 2000s

Does anyone know the location of the 1995 photo? Looks like the BMT train sharing the same tracks as the shorter IRT Red Bird cars. I double checked the side door count on the Red cars and it was 3 doors, not 4 that's why its an IRT train.
