Had doubts about doing it myself, but this video gave me the coincidence that I wouldn't mess up the door cards. It really was an easy job. I swapped in some Hertz 5" fitted well. Used a hacksaw to help notch out the recess for the speaker lugs and 2mm drill to make holes for the screws that hold the speaker onto the homemade adapter. Everything broke away cleanly with pliers. Torx T30 is what you need for 4 door screws. Was also lucky that by breaking out the terminals from the plastic block, I was able to push them straight onto the speaker terminals without any soldering. Both wires were yellow with a red line(!) I tried the thicker of the 2 red lines as -ve and that seems to work...

Thanks for the help. I was able to drill holes in the ring without any cracking. Easier install than I thought. I just need to run new speaker wire now, as the stock ones aren't big enough.

there is also a screw behind the armrest. the pad is removed by wedging something thin and flat in the front of it then sliding it backwards

you honestly don't know how happy I am to have found this, I've had bum speakers on my 2003 Mini for years and I've been thinking "Why can't I just do it myself??" - BUT! can you include a shopping list, what speakers tools and such? something I could find on amazon? Sorry, there were a few things that were mentioned that made me think "hmmmm, I don't know how to look for that"

I always used the old speaker connection so it's easy to plug back in.

I didn't know that a MINI R53 had UK house wiring colours in it for LIVE!! Red is power in automotive circles over here as well

A while back I looked for this (couple of weeks before this was posted this) and found some Adapter rings on Ebay, I think youtube is preventing me from linking them but would that help all with some of the more destructive parts of the process? If I can I'd like to avoid any tempering with the parts.

Use a drill to make the holes then easy to screw speaker in.

There was no need to cut that connection off all you do is solder the one off the speaker to your new ones and plug back in

All I want to know is how in the hell do you take off the cover the speaker cover that's on the door panel

i don't have this car any more so can't be sure but it looks like it's riveted in place so you'd have to drill out the rivets to remove the speaker cover from the door panel.
