R6 motorcycle cylinder misfire power loss fault finding spark check diagnosis

My yamaha yzf r6 5eb 1999 suddenly lost power on the motorway and started farting and missing when exceeding 4.5k rpm so I had to do some fault finding, checked the cylinders with the water check and cylinder 4 was not firing up! So done some coil and spark checks and all seems to be fine so the problem must be in the carbs!!

I came across this same issue. Recently i was riding home from work it start missing. I did the same water test. I also did the same coil test with the cylinder i found to be dead..with spark. I swapped that coil with the one next to it, and the issue followed. Not the most scientific way of doing it. But i could safely eliminate a wiring issue, spark plug, valve, or injector issue on that cylinder. I replaced all the coils, as i figured it may just be firing weak, and it corrected the issue.

Not yet mate! My next step is to take out the carbs and give them a good clean then balance and see what happens from there, Il try to post a few more vids as I go along.

If you are checking cylinders a easy way is ...if you know 1 cylinder is not firing by using a wax candle or water . Switch coils from 1 cylinder to another Cylinder . and if cylinder that the 1 that was not getting hot is now getting hot and the 1 that was good is now not . You know right away coil is bad ( just another way to check coil.

i have an 02 yamaha r1 and its blowing air from tha left side of my motor some say it could be stuck valve some sat dropped valve but theres zero knocking idk what to do ans some say it could be a header gasket leak exhaust leak im like wtf is it

Backfire is pretty normal on sports bikes when accelerating hard and then when you come off the throttle or pull the clutch you get deceleration "decel pop" but a misfire is totally different!! Basically when one or more of the spark plugs aren't firing properly you get a misfire resulting in loss of power and engine running really poor and rough idling.

Azz Kam I was having problems with my bike running really poorly when I got home from work last night I noticed flames coming from the exhaust which I quickly connected to unburnt fuel when I started it up today I noticed it was idling really badly and it's just occurred to me now that it may be a spark plug issue at any rate I'm going to keep trying different things until next week when I'm taking it into a mechanic for an engine tuning (which he said would be what would probably resolve the problem) which if I can resolve the problem if it's due to the spark plugs won't be needed

Start with plugs. While there test your ignition coils see if they are up to spec. Xhamfe air filter while you are there and after that if all elae fails you need a valve adjustment.

Just had the exact same problem with my 99 R6,one branch of the manifold was not getting warm and the bike was running shit and backfiring on idle then it would eventually cut out,so changed the coil in the cylinder where the exhaust manifold was staying cold and put a new set of plugs in and its now spot on and running like a dream,was shitting myself it was going to be something more serious but a £80 fix sorted it :)

richard s your bike did not have the same problem. He said his was fine on idle and low revs.Your information might point someone in the wrong direction.Good you got yours sorted though.

This is a classic dirty carb problem. Stuck float needle I'm sure.

Reading didn't change after putting in a few drops of oil in cylinder so this indicates it may be a valve problem!!!

Miguel Côté I believe it was the piston rings unfortunately I couldn’t carry on the project at that time and had to let it go to someone else who has more mechanical knowledge

when you syc 'ed the carbs, you sure you didnt adjust fuel screws by mistake... or vacuum pipes on correctly.. Just tryin to help

Hey Keepitmoving , quick question. Once you clean your carbs and set your mixture screw. Should you sync the carbs or it doesn’t matter? I cleaned my carbs and set my mixture screw. But now my bike runs like 💩. It idles perfect.But the acceleration is not there. Any suggestions?

I had that issue on my 03 R6 and it was the coil on cyl 2. It cane down to finnaly changing rhem all out and then one at a time after i had fixed it with the 4 new ones, i did one at a time just to find the old bad one. Took them getting hot to mess up

Levi Bridwell had the exact same issue on my R6 race bike ran sweet when cold-cool once upto temp ran like a pig trouble hot starting... new coils probs fixed....

I presume when you don't warm up your bike properly and just full throttle to 160mph!!! I use to work just off a motorway and at times I use to just start my bike and jump straight onto it and full throttle😑 that's my guess.

I can't really tell what your problem may be by just watching your vid! You will have to make a more comprehensive video with all your issues and I'm sure there will be someone who can identify the most likely causes and then it will be a elimination process.
