Hi John, very nice finds you have there. I've had a look through the relevant catalogues, there were two Tri-ang Hornby Flying Scotsman sets, R605 in 1970 which had two Thompson coaches and a Pullman car; and your set, R608 for 1971/72 with two Thompson coaches. Into the Hornby days, the set became RS 508 for 1973, again with just the two Thompson coaches. There was no Flying Scotsman set listed in the 1974 Catalogue, but one returned in 1975 as the R549 with two Thompson all 3rd and one Brake 3rd coaches. This set became R176 in 1976, which was the last year the Thompson coaches were produced. As you noted, it is a shame that not more variants of the Thompsons were made. I believe the reason these coaches did not have interiors was due the them being a compromise based on the unit style mark 1's, and are slightly under scale in length as they use the mk1 underframe & bogies, and the window & door layout is different to the B.R. style sides used for all the other models. However there is a chap selling 3D printed interiors to fit the Thompson's on Ebay which will improve them greatly. There was indeed an Electric Blue Version of the Hymek made for a short time, along with the Brush type 2 class 31 and the type 3 class 37 plus the overhead electric loco's. Another thoroughly enjoyable video John, Hope my ramblings are of interest.

Greetings again John! I believe the Hymek initially appeared in the duo-tone Green colours for the first part of 1967, then went to blue and yellow through the Tri-ang-Hornby and Hornby Railways period to reappear in green in 1978. There were blue variations as with the other diesels and Mark 1 coaches. Another delightful video!😊

Good vid John. The one thing I never repair is the chuff chuff set-up. It's like scraping your fingernails over a chalkboard for me. Although the lit firebox and the chuff chuff was probably the equivalent back then, what dcc is today. I'm probably in the minority on that point. Steven.

Hi John, I have one Flying Scotsman but I couldn't say which version it is. It has a tender drive so no huff-chuff. A very nice runner and much quieter than yours. Hymeks, I have two, one with a Tri-ang drive and one with a Hornby drive. Neither one is terribly reliable. Yours seems to run very nicely. David.

i run a lot of the old triang. triang/hornby locos from the sixties/seventies sometimes putting some graphite (pencil lead) on the worm drive can help. great models from the time they were toy trains.
