The 9 is a former skip stop line (Sister route to the #1 line)....as for the other #s.... if the TA were to impose skip stop service on the other routes the numbers would already be set up.....the green 8 would have been the #4 skip stop route......the green 10 would be the #5 sister line....the purple 11 would have been the #7 sister line...the red 12 would have been the #2 sister line....the red 13 would be #3 sister line.....and before y'all ask about the #6....it already has one....the diamond 6 (Pelham Exp) sister route is the circle 6 Parkchester local....and yes.....I'm a rail buff......AND a retired motorman

Yeah....on paper only.....the OLD cars never had signage for #8.....so those cars(Low V or Q cars...or the 1938 World's Fair cars) had side signs that read "3RD AVE LOCAL"....The R12/14 cars signs read "SHUTTLE"....the #8 signs on R62/62A cars......are in case the TA employs skip stop service on #4 line

On another note, I did see and I R T (numbered) train parked in Coney Island yard, which is where you would usually see BMT (lettered) trains. And this silver IRT train had the number 13 on it and it was lit up. So you can tell that someone done that on purpose. I've seen a few examples where there were trains that were in service and running, and seemed like someone had intentionally changed the front or rear signs to something that was way out of place. .... such as a Franklin Avenue shuttle train that once had a blue airplane logo on it. That blue airplane logo was formerly known as the JFK Express, and it stopped running in 1990.

Those higher number s was on the R62as for a special reason s we all miss the old 3rd Avenue elevated line which it definitely helped out the 2/5 trains and the BX 55 buses. They should of left that 3rd Avenue elevated line Alone and they would not have this big issue s. It is a shame before GOD. He sits high and look low.

Alexander Hamilton 2-digit numbers were never used by the IRT, or anything that evolved from it. BMT had numbers. 1 is now the Q, 2 is the R (didn’t go to Queens at the time) 3 was a Yellow D, 4 and 8 being the N, 5 being some sort of P, 6 being 5th Ave el, 7 being the Franklin ave shuttle, 8 being a proto-W(Astoria trains, IRT also used 8 for Astoria), 9 being flushing trains from Broadway, 10 for Brown M, 11 for MJ, 12 for Lexington El, 13 for Fulton st, 14 and 15 as the J, I am confused, and 16 being the L.
