I actively have to judge an actor's rendition of the entire role on how he sings the patter and rhythm of "my blue-eyed Sarah, warm Joanne, sweet Jenny, loving Susan, crazy Amy..."-- and god, does Esparza nail it.

I blame it on Raul Esparza....he just amps up the emotion way more for me than the original cast ever did. In a nutshell, he's amazing.
@OrangeXenon542 жыл бұрын
I hate to say it, but the original cast not being actual singers really hampered its staying power. I get the decision as it was originally conceived as a comedy and the comedic aspects were emphasized, but this cast is so unbelievably talented that the existential, emotional core of this brilliant musical can’t help but be front and center.

Heh. Good to know I'm not the only one whose mind immediately jumps to "Johanna" in this song.

this gives me such an intense spring awakening vibe, which is weird considering how far apart the shows were made.

I agree! Tho tbf I doubt the composers of spring awakening weren't across their Sondheim.

This song is actually better out of the context of the show. Before I was privileged enough to be in a production of this show I thought these women were the many he was currently dating. LOL!

One hasn't lived until one has heard Mandy Patinkin's rendering of this song; it's from his 1994 album, "Experiment." Sublime.

Ugh. I hate this song in the revival. Raul sings it extremely well (Of course), but I absolutely detest the instrumentation for the song. I don't mind the simplified orchestra elsewhere in the show, but here it just doesn't work. I actually hated this song until I heard the original orchestrations...
