Actually size is the reason. AMCA is a medium combat Aircraft. Russian engines are very big, it suits only su35 level heavy aircraft. And Russian engines are unreliable.

It's unavoidable altering the supply chain if there's any move towards manufaturing a new engine. The question is how many different new engines we are going to venture into. We are in talk with Safran, GE, RollsRoyce for a complete design of a new engine which should cover multiple aircraft designs currently in the making such as AMCA and TEDBF. It'll be a nightmare for supply chain group to manage such a massive procurement undertaking. It's not a good idea to step into al41 manufacture when we are vying for a new gen engine. We may consider if Russia offers Isdeliye 30.
