I was driving down the road the other day & "Rab Noakes" popped into my head. I hadn't thought about him in around 20 years. I'ts great to rediscover the past!!

Rab's passing brought me here today. Founding member of Stealers Wheel, who I saw a couple of times in the 70's. Great band.

I bought the record way back in '74. I love it just as much now, as I loved it then.

Red Pump Special was a real favourite album of mine, and this track and Branch are really great songs. I’ve still got the LP and will take it to Barnoldswick in February and get it signed. Looking forward to it.

Still have my original copy of Red Pump Special bought in 1974. Have transferred it to mp3 and still listen to regularly. Both Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan are on this track. Still as fresh when I first heard it.

Always have loved this single. Bought it in the seventies; still sounds just as great today....love it to bits. Thanks for sharing as I 'aint heard it for years. Wonder where my single is now? Ahhh well. I guess that's what's so great about You Tube!

This song reminds me a bit of american alternative country/rock band The Jayhawks (obviously long before their time.) Yeah nice song. I'm a big Rafferty fan but haven't got round to checking out Mr Noakes stuff yet. That definately sounds like Gerry accompanying him on backing vocals. Their voices were well suited, shame Noakes didn't stay on in Stealers Wheel after 1971. Cheers for posting.

I still have this single on 45rpm but I can't play it anymore. I wore it out it's been played so many times. The late great Gerry Rafferty recorded it also and it's on his album Over My Head. It's also here on KZbin.

It's from Rab's 1974 album on A & M produced by Elliott Mazer (who also produced in the same year Andy Fairweather-Low's "Spider Jiving) and indeed you're correct... you not only detect Gerry Rafferty but, you also hear his compadre Joe Egan ...well spotted !

Rab was on BBC Scotland's Hogmanay show along with Emma Pollock doing a great tribute take on Gerry's hit Get It Right Next Time.

I think Rafferty co-wrote this song? Anyway its sad to read of his situation. I also have this single, and both sides are wonderful songs, magical video too, thanks!

Oh...yes. From an alternative universe where Rab Noakes DIDN'T leave Stealer's Wheel and, instead of "Stuck In The Middle" becoming the endlessly nagging hit, this tune id. For those that didn't know, Rab Noakes was a member of Stealer's Wheel until just BEFORE they recorded this minor (then) and consequently, MUCH, bigger hit. Gerry was fine (Baker Street), Joe was real good (Back On The Road), but Rab was (and still, constantly), IS great. Andrew Knight
