The Chofetz Chaim was one of the most influential Rabbinic thinkers of the late 19th and early 20th century. Rabbi Israel Meir Kagan is known principally for his dramatically creative analysis of the topic of forbidden speech (lashon ha-ra), and rose to prominence as a major scholar-leader of the Jewish people. Part of the Jewish Biography as History lecture series by Dr. Henry Abramson, more lectures available at www.jewishhistorylectures.org.

Excellent presentation! In studying the Chofetz Chayim's work it seems that Lashon Harah is not only speaking...but it is about thinking, perceiving and ultimately spouting negativity. We need to focus on Lashon Tova, which is cultivating a positive perspective.

Yasher Koach Dr Henry and crew from Melbourne Australia! Quick question, I hope this isn't a hard question: Is it true that The Chofetz Chaim asked/ insisted that Rabbis and others be as careful with kosher food that that puti nto their mouths as the words ( the kashrut) what goes out of their mouths (kosher speech)?

The story goes that the Chofetz Chaim asked R' Chaim Ozer that he should sign that Loshon Hora is like Chazer, and R'chaim Ozer answered that he doesn't want to make light chazer. I don't know how authentic the story is but that's how the story goes.

I have been told that the famous portrait of the Chafetz Chaim was actually the Maggid of Radin.

the recently-publicized film of the arrival of the Chofetz Chaim to the Knessiah Gedolah in Vienna put all such doubts to rest. Clearly the man in the film is the same man in the famous picture. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmi7nXeIn9KDg6c

His name was Cohen, but the Russians can't say an H, so it changed to Kahgan. He later took his step father's name which w Pupko.
