“Mark Twain,” I believe, refers to a measure of the water as being two fathoms deep. The river depth needs to be measured to make sure that the riverboat doesn’t go aground, so a leadsman has to measure the depth and call it out. Two fathoms or twelve feet was enough depth for such a boat to negotiate the river safely (Wikipedia).

Yes, everybody has their part to play, the old ways eventually must make way for the new. It is like Yosef and his brothers. He saw something was amiss and he spoke up about it. It is the same story, the one who speaks up and does is killed/excommunicated/criticised/abused/imprisoned/put out of the camp/ridiculed/mocked/buried. But ultimately when time favours resurrected.m by the same ones who had no choice but to treat him they way they did. Because they in their time were probably right, but the passage of time transforms things. Like the teenager who rebels has to be disciplined but over time when that teenager matures and becomes their full potential, then time finally favours them.
