This episode is so incredibly powerful. There is so much truth to how (lots secular) Jews - many in Israel have cowered and become ashamed of who they are and the land they live in. I remember noticing how much Israel bragged about their inclusivity and their pride parades as if that’ll somehow convince the world to like them. No you’re a Jew, you belong in your land. Rabbi both of my sons were US Marines. The whole time I couldn't get a deep breath. This feels the same. My heart is clenched so tight and I'm so afraid for those who have and haven't been released. I'm afraid of what they saw, the worst deprivation of G-dless souls. Your words are uplifting during this dark time. I watched another one of your discussions where you talked about several ways in which antisemitism has its roots in so many ways using deconstruction as a methodology we overlooked perhaps the deepest wound that may never be healed. Of course you are aware of what Freude looks to parental relationships but if we really looked at the story of Ishmael we basically see from our perspective Ishmael was an abandoned child replaced by a younger brother with a different. We all know the problems that arise in situations like that, I'm just curious about how that can be reconciled. Or not. And what kind of god calls upon a people to commit murder coveting idolatry etc?

Ishmael was the son of the maidservant. He was not the intended by G-d or legitimate heir to the G-dly mission which Avraham had embarked upon, which continued on through Yitzchak and then Yaakov. Yishmael also committed idolatry and persecuted his younger brother Yitzchak, shooting arrows at him. He did not go in Avraham's ways and was not worthy of being chosen to carry out the Divine mission.

Re last question, i.e. victim self-blaming. There is of course a tradition of taking the blame, seeing everything happens by hashgocho protis, that it was e.g. "through our sins" that the temple was destroyed etc.,, and the nations are nothing but a tool in the hands of G-d. The Rebbe put this in a healthy perspective that takes into account all our history since then, and the expectations for a speedy redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu. Nowadays I think, the Rebbe's approach of this topic is the legitimate one, and guilt-tripping Jews into dejection and self flagellation already fired back in the pre-chassidic days after the era of the false messiahs

Secular Jews better remember that during Holocaust the Nazis didnt care if you wore your religion outwardly or you were assimilated. Your point re the Rosh Yeshiva's directive- i would channel the meaning of his message just as Rabbi Jacobson was saying. When yeshiva boys are told to do teshuva that means for them to increase their connection with Hashem, which leads to veohavto lereiacho comocha!. Teshuva is never about being a victim, it's about increasing connection with Hashem. Repentance from the perspective of being a victim, a sinner is a Christian concept, NEVER a Jewish one. Also, approximately the same amount of Jewish people were expelled from Muslim countries in 1948 in retaliation for the establishment of the state of Isreal. They lived there for centuries and were kicked out like stray dogs. They weren't treated well in the new state either, yet they made the best of it and rebuilt their lives from scratch. The "Palestinians" prefer to stay victims, even though they chose to leave when the neighboring countries offered to join them in war against Isreal.
