After 3 years of growing nicely in a glass coffee pot, I decided to plant my Rabbit's Foot Fern (Davallia fejeensis) into a goalie mask for a Halloween special.

I think this is an awesome idea, but I think it might be neat to put 2 fake eyes in the eye holes.

Hey Darryl! OMYGOD your ferns are GORGEOUS!! UGH, I wish I had seen this video just before repotting my Rabbit's Foot fern this morning lol!! I saw that mine was not thriving and every tiny frond that sprouted were drying up!! I checked the soil and it was compacted and soggy even though I always drained the excess water! And I wish I had sphagnum moss on hand but, being that I knew this plant is ephyphitic like Orchids, I mixed half & half of both Espoma Organic potting mix and Espoma Organic Orchid mix! In your opinion, is that a good mix for Rabbit's Foot ferns, if not I'm willing to purchase the sphagnum moss! Thank you in advance for any input Darryl, stay safe and well!!🌱🤗🙏🏼🙏🏼

Do you find that the ribosomes especially like to crawl on specific types of materials of pots such as terracotta/plastic/glass/wood? Cool idea!

I did not know I could grown my rabbits foot fern in sphagnum moss.
@pammclennan1642

I wonder if the old moss will break down and cause a problem for the plant later down the road. Why not soak the root ball plus moss in water so the moss strands can be pulled out? Just an idea.
@HousePlantJournal
@HousePlantJournal 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I probably could have done that (soaking to loosen the old moss). I don't anticipate the moss causing any problems though - I've seen some very old ferns growing around a ball of roots and moss for what must be decades.

OK you know best. I grow orchids and we are told that old sphagnum can rot and affect the roots so that's why I made a suggestion. Love your videos.

We call it a tarantula fern. I think that name is more descriptive. Are they rhizomes or aerial roots?
@HousePlantJournal
@HousePlantJournal 10 ай бұрын
Tarantula fern is a much better name for this plant for sure! The crawling roots are rhizomes - new fronds sprout from them

Do you think paper coffee filters would work as a substitute to landscaping fabric?
@HousePlantJournal
@HousePlantJournal 4 жыл бұрын
Probably would work but since I drink coffee, I'd rather use them for coffee! If I was to roughly estimate, I think the landscape fabric would be a cheaper option per square inch of coverage.

A surrealist jungle at city home !! One question Can I mix inorganic media with organic media for Phelonopsis and onsidium alliance ? Can there be a coconut fibre padding to preventing small granulated media wash out through the side hole of a clay pot or the net of a plastic basket 6” in size ??
@HousePlantJournal
@HousePlantJournal 4 жыл бұрын
I don't have much experience with trying different media for orchids. Everything is permissible when you're experimenting - just try! :)

An unusual ‘pot’ ! A possible alternative to having it sit on the stand face down would be to hang it with the foliage towards the window and the face creeping out your guest. Something like this....🌿👺

Why did you wait till the fern was sooo root-bound?! You need to pay attention to your plants, especially since it was in a GLASS container..don’t say you couldn’t see the riots fighting to get out! Very neglectful
