Sorry for some problems with staring into space or some things like that. There was some miscommunication between me and a pal helping me edit and he used some of my livestream clips, instead of the rerecords. That's something I'll with try to improve on in the future. Additionally, some people have questioned the "secret portion". I titled it that because you can miss out on some of those scenes if you don't get caught by the Neighbor. Didn't really know what else to title it, (optional act capture scenes?/Neighbor past scenes?). So that's why I titled it that way. Sorry if there is any confusion.

Appearantly everyone is confused. From all the scenes that are given the story seems like this. The neighbor had a family and during a car accident it seems he lost his children or child and wife. This is supported through all the scenes in where we see that the neighbor is telling someone to hurry up or to come one. In where we hear a car drive off. In another scene we see a car crashed and as you keep playing you notice that in some scenes the neighbor is crying meaning something must have caused him to be sad. The last scene to support this is the hospital where we see the neighbor crying again and we hear a beep noise until the beep noise becomes a constant beep showing that someone had just died. The ending was a dream as the main character was obviously traumatized by being kidnapped and going back to his house as an adult lead him to start having PTSD shown as you start to see the shadows with eyes. In order to let go of the past the main character confronts his nightmare which was act 3 was mainly about. Finally trying to figure out what was behind that door in act 1 and letting go of the incident that occurred to him as a kid.

singceline So from what we can gather it seems the neighbor like all people had a job. Most presumably he was a clown or is involved with a circus. This is supported by the roller coaster that is added into the house and thinking about it why would someone add a coaster. So I'm not 100% sure if they have a connection with the neighbor and if I'm also correct there is a toy merch from the creator whose name is can't remember. Or the mannequins might be a representation of the neighbor and his family since there are 4 of them

so... basically this game is all about letting go of the past as we seen in the protagonist past. so here's my quick explanation: the protagonist was kidnapped once by the neighbor, but he escaped. several years later he moved back to his house (I think?) and began seeing things thanks to the trauma they experience during the time they are staying with the neighbor but in the end he finally let's go of it and finally found peace ok this explanation is shit.

The neighbour had a wife and two kids a boy and a girl the neighbour and wife had an accident and the wife died in the hospital cutscenes it shows that a a person is lying in bed and died that was the wife. In the roller coaster scene it shows a girl getting pushed The boy had pushed his little sister of the roof and died he digs a grave in his backyard and Barries her the neighbour got depressed and does want his boy to die also so he puts him in his basement and keeps him to avoid any problems the neighbour had put missing signs his boy and girl is missing to avoid the police capturing his son. The main character who was playing football in the street saw the neighbour putting his kid in the basement. The character goes and investigates the basement and gets captured by the neighbour. After getting captured and locked in a room the neighbours kid unlocks the room and the character escapes. After some years the character was unable to pay his rent for his apartment so he has to come back to his old house when he comes back he sees the neighbour house destroyed when he goes to sleep he has nightmares about the house and neighbour

It seems like the story changed trajectory somewhere mid-development and suffered for it. This one doesn't make a lot of sense and ultimately feels like it doesn't matter, since 99% of it is dreams of a half-remembered childhood we never get any real answers to.

Anti-Mattering I don't really think that's what makes the game bad though tbh. I mean if they want to expand the story and give the game more weight than good for them. To me the real problem with the game is the quality of the gameplay and controls dropped during development.

They didn't, though. This is basically what we'd been seeing since Alpha 3. We knew exactly what we were getting ourselves into gameplay wise and chose to accept it based on the expectation that the story would be worth it. But now neither of those elements is any good and the finished product is shit.

The game would've been better if the developers weren't trying to please their fans by making it like this if you pay attention to when the game had it's first few demos and look at it now you will see what they did to change everything they wanted people to play it and enjoy it but at the cost they gave up on the original idea and I think that it's kinda upsetting to me. Rochelle Miller There used to be no plot except for you have a new house, now go say hi to the neighbor whose house you just heard screaming from; but this was fine as it was an alpha and the gameplay really was unique, leading to a sort of magical experience in a sense The main point that OP is trying to make is that as the game continued development, the story got way prioritized over gameplay. This is why we now have a broken, confusing, and overall boring game as our final version. Since the final release didn't add much as far as mechanics, the magical touch it used to have has faded away, which explains the disappointment that many fans have had. Tbh, I wouldn't call it disappointment, I'd actually call it anger Also I saw this game go downhill after the third alpha where things were far more complicated and solutions made no sense, compared to the first one where most everything was just cause and effect, which was able to show a lot of cool features off (like that one shark puzzle)

I guess a lot of people don't know that the neighbor had two children named aaron and mya the protagonist (also known as nicky) was friends with the neighbours child (aaron) but slowly things went down hill the two children of the neighbour "disappeared" but in reality the neighbours daughter died because she fell off the roof thanks to an accident caused by her brother and the two children were already going through a lot since their mother had died in a car crash the neighbour now lost his daughter and wife and he has had enough he locks his son inside the basement to "protect" him and what the player sees in act 1 is the neighbour catching his child to lock him inside the basement the player goes to the house and unlocks the door to the basement and then in act 2 the player gets locked inside the house by the neighbour and then the player escapes from the house and turns back only to see the neighbour clowing his gate to his house and that's the last time we truly see the neighbour. In act 3 many years later the player has fully grown and yet still has the trauma he gets evicted and goes to his childhood home there he sees that the neighbours house had been demolished and is now just rubble the player then goes on to move in but since the fear is still there the trauma is there still and he falls asleep on his couch and then he dreams of the neighbour his house is massive since in his mind the neighbours house always felt humongous as he continues through the house there are fear rooms those are the things he has to get over. Each one is specific fear darkness, he had a fear of the dark, fear grocery store he had trauma in a grocery store hence a fear, and in the fear school he was always alone in school and was often ridiculed or called a weirdo and as he over comes the fears that helps in the basement the basement being extraordinarily odd is where the most trauma is set. Act 4 the neighbour is massive and in this you have to slowly deteriorate the neighbour to his knees and then you can enter the house on his back. The neighbour is crying in front of a missing poster and you can continue to the next part you have to defend your younger self from the shadows and demons that once haunted you, you slowly grow bigger than the shadow and thus you're bigger than the fear and trauma it is then killed off signifying the fear is being overcome. The player now awakes and has overcome everything he once feared. And yes I understand this is a late comment I just wanted to clear up some things for a few people.

From what I've seen of this new plot. As a kid this dude (main character) was inside the neighbours house( not sure how he got there whether he got kidnapped or he was a curious kid). The kid got lost in the house or got scared of the owner and couldn't find a way out/ escape. Eventually found a way out. Years later - ages after the main character left home - he got a letter which i can only assume was the death of his guardian who owned the home t was kinda informing him that he needed to pack up the shit in the house and so on ( don't think he was living there since he didn't​ bring his shit - only a suitcase). Once he got there he saw the neighbours house (burnt to the crisp or damaged beyond fixing) which brought a PTSD into place. He saw things out of the corner of his eye and so on (hence the figure) - anyway he felt nauseous and just went back to the house he was at - fell asleep and then this brought the nightmare that he felt he couldn't escape from - his childlike memories painted his neighbours house to be huge with secrets/ horrors and to almost be a trap when in reality it was probably just a simple house with a man inside. The neighbour lost his family or what we can assume. But idk how that played apart in the main characters story. It could have been a rumour that was spread by the people of that town that this neighbour killed his family - when in reality they died in a crash. But since kids are cruel. they could've made up this story about this neighbour that included the idea of him murdering them - which made him into a scary mysterious "get off my lawn" kinda guy and could've made other neighbourhood gets dare the main character to enter the house which only fueled this kids fear which ultimately fueled his huge imagination which i think is what we see throughout. Like the scene where he was a child running home and then the neighbour stands at the gate then hears a smash. This could've been the smash of a window that was caused by the neighbourhood kids. In which could've fueled the idea that his windows are easily breakable one and two that the town bullied him for a rumour. If i said something that's not right - correct me. Or if you want to add. do so. Just my thoughts. Hopefully you can read it. I will clarify if needed.

I think the 'neighbour' is the players dad and as a kid your mother died in a car crash and because you were a kid at the time you blamed your father for her death. I also think there may have been a sister/daughter who whilst playing fell from the roof being badly injured and later dying in hospital (hence the roller coaster and hospital scene) resulting in your father trying to keep you safe inside the house so he doesn't lose you like his wife and daughter but you still blaming him for your mothers death see this as him trying to trap you so you eventually 'escape' and run away which is why I also believe your character either has dyslexia or just has trouble reading, because he ran from home (he didn't go to school to learn how to read) also I believe the shadow creature thing, is just the physical embodiment of guilt, the fathers guilt of causing his wife's death, the guilt of not being able to save his daughter and the guilt of causing his son to run away from home and the reason it's seen around the player is because he now feels guilty for leaving his father because as an adult he understands it wasn't his fault and he was only trying to protect you but by the end the player is able to forget about the past and move on with his life. Probably way off but eh that's my interpretation.

This is what happened: The neighbor lose his family, the first one it was his son by an accident, later his daughter on a roller coaster, the neighbor gets to depression and start to imagine that everything that happened it was by his fault, at the same time, he imagine that his Children are now missing and start to protect them from the outside. A New kid (the main Protagonist) it starts to suspect that his neighbor is hiding something inside of the house, the kid go to the house and try to finds out the secret of the neighbor, but later he's kidnapped. Hours later the protagonist escape from the neighbor and try to live far away from the neighbor. Years later the protagonist has no money to pay his department, so he left his department and returns to the old town where he used to live. When he arrives at his old house, he starts to imagine Shadows and weird stuff, reminding how it was living in front of the house from his neighbor, so he slept because he's afraid. After all his dream he finds out that his neighbor it was a good guy but with a dark past.

Alright, I'm only five minutes in and I can tell this game is trying too hard. There's a line between psychological horror and acid trips, and realistic construction of a house. You gotta have a balance between what's real, and what's a trip, and how much danger there is. Hello Neighbor was scary not just because of what your neighbor may be hiding, but his persistence in finding and stopping you by any means necessary. You were under constant threat of detection and defeat, and that kept the tension really high! Where's the danger? Shouldn't he be following or chasing you through these corridors? Wasn't that the whole point of the game? This is so wildly different from what I remember that it's downright boring. I shouldn't be put to sleep by a horror game. Poorly lit, absurdly labyrinthine architecture? The realism is gone. 5:56 Oh now he comes in. Is this Amnesia? How did he find you so fast? 9:14 I think perhaps this game forgot its scope... 10:36 There we are! That's the intimate suburban horror I remember. 12:05 Hey, this isn't that bad. For those who say the ending is shit : Act 1 and 2 did happen. It wasn't a dream. The character went trough it when he was a kid. And Act 3 is him getting PTSD after moving back to his house. And Act 4 is him trying to beat this trauma. You manage to beat the Trauma and you wake up, no fear or trauma. Peacfull Morning. And the character lives in peace now.

My thoughts of hello neighbor. The neighbor was a happy father and loved his family a few years later his wife died in a car wreck, the son died of sickness, and the daughter was pushed off the roof of the house. The neighbor was sad and that sadness turned to anger. So he kidnapped a child that was curios and ventured into his lawn. Another child started becoming curios aka the main character you start finding out more and more about the neighbor. You decided to leave a few years later you got a message that your neighbor was killed so you returned to the home to see that the house was burnt to the ground. You get a call and you see a strange figure outside you start to freak out a bit. You decide to lie down and you appear in The home you once lived in. You learn all of the neighbor secrets even defending your younger you. You live happy in your new home never to think of your past again.

ACT 1: you start the game as a little kid, he sees the house and investigates it, at the end he gets captured ACT 2: he comes out the basement and then escapes from the house ACT 3: he is much older and is moving back into his original house, but then sees the house and tries to investigate one more time ACT 4: he’s in his house and looks across the road to find out that the neighbours house is gone Basically it was all about him after nightmares about the neighbour after he got captured. I'm sorry but this game was so overhyped it is almost the exact same as the betas and alphas and not many improvements at all it's still a broken alpha/beta game it's pretty bad for a game that took 2 years to develop since pre alpha and canceled for 4 months more so this game did not reach my expectations in my opinion and if you understand it. It still has a good story and a fun game just not as good as it should be but for me to beat it I still put a good 10 hours in it and for the most part enjoyed it

What if the neighbor actually lost his daughter,her getting killed by a train (rollercoaster,idk)? Or,maybe,his daughter was kidnapped and killed... Then he thought the protagonist's father was the guilty one,so,after blaming himself for so long,got sick of it and decided to get revenge. But,everytime the protagonist would escape or the neighbor repented,not wanting to harm the kid. ORRRRRR he just doesn't want people to know about his past... So he kept himself away from people. But,right after the protagonist entered,he tried harder. Then,seeing the kid's determination to find out the truth,unwillingly tries to make them understand what happened. I think the neighbor and his family was in a car wreck causing him to have someone rush to the scene and him crying and the hospital scene when the beeps would turn into a long one representing someone died meant that one person actually lived for a while longer putting stress on the neighbor making him want to keep this a secret like the wreck was his fault when it wasn't so in the basement was the shrine for his children and he didn't want anyone to know about it and want the protagonist saw (the shadow) was his imagination from the PTSD he received from being kidnapped by the neighbor which caused him to think that he did it again. I don't know I just wrote what I thought..

I mean, the game isn't bad. The artstyle is pretty, the game is/runs generally smooth, it's pleasing to look at, and it's a fun difference from most games made today. The one real downer is the fact that the ending is inconclusive and vague, and from a game like this is the ending the most memorable thing. I don't know if they ended it like this because they wanted to, because they didn't care or because they couldn't think of a different/better ending, but in my opinion they should at least have done something different then this. Still, I rate this game a solid 8,5/10. Good job, great game.

The story is that the neighbors wife died in a car crash his son killed his sister. He locked his son in the basement. You come along and he gets annoyed with you coming into his home. His son ends up dying in the basement so the neighbor burns down his house with him in it. Which is why you See the house burned down in act 3. You have a dream of going back to his house in act 3 And getting over your fears.

It's actually the one of the most creative "it was just a dream" plots I've ever seen. The dream was based off the TRUE events of Acts 1 and 2, and the dream was basically a manifestation of his past traumas, and he had to get over them. Once he gets over them and wakes up, he's ready to move forward in life because he's conquered the thing that's been bothering him for so long

In the last scene where it shows the neighbor in the house with his door locked up and a shadow of a child trying to enter, I believe that is the neighbor too scared to confront the past of locking the child up so he boards his door up which means he will never be able to exit (the exit is seen in the same room as the child) and forever living with the past.
