Sean Longstaff doesn’t get the same leeway as other players he couldn’t be rotated and he played through the pain barrier for us and gave as much as he could much of last year . Yes he was below par and his finishing could be better but the lad gives everything he can. We know he isn’t the answer but had he been able to have rotated more I think it could’ve been a different scenario. This year will be different for him with Willock hopefully fit and Tonali back he may find himself much fresher in the latter half of the season compared to last year.

People forget Longstaff was our highest scoring midfielder last year. Ok maybe he doesn’t start ahead of a fully fit Joe, Tonali , Bruno, but he is more than talented enough to make a huge contribution to the team every year. The criticism is unfair.

No to Rabiot would question where he would be play and he would want first team football. He is not better than our first 3 and cannot see him as a squad player and boat may have passed for him. Kingsley Coman is also being linked to Liverpool as alternative to Gordon but its risky even as a loan. He has a poor injury record not just one season but over several seasons 45 games in last 3 seasons. Also hes 28 as well, with wages of E328000pw so is outside our wage structure. Even if hes drops his wages with his recent injuries its too risky. Would go for someone 2-3 yrs younger like Donyell Malen or Bryan Mbeumo both with better injury records and wages within our structure.

I remember the days not that long ago when we used to say - 'we dont demand a team that wins - we demand a team that tries'. Longstaff was (reportedly) playing injured for a lot of last season as we had no other options in midfield due to the injury crisis - so he gave his all even though injured. He performed much better the season before and was a regular starter in a team that qualified for the champions league. I think we need to give him a break, and see how he performs this season when (hopefully) fit again.
